not exactly a ficlet-ish thing
okok I'm going to bed like right now but like ok
So what about Death taking Dean to task for the shit he pulled with tricking Sam? Being all 'your brother had decided to go with me and you did a very nasty thing in keeping him here' and Dean is like 'but you don't understand I can't lose him again I just can't'Â
and Death just calmly saying 'but you will. it might be tomorrow and it might be in fifty years but it's not your decision to make. it's not even his decision. it's mine. and you can try and bend the rules all you want but I *will* win this fight Dean. you'd do yourself a favor to accept that.'Â
and then without warning he pulls dean in close and dean has no idea how he's supposed to respond to...whatever is happening right now but death is cool to the touch and somehow his own heart is still beating up near his ears and death is still speaking to him. 'for someone who spends more time in mortal peril than out of it you're in such denial about your own impermanence. you think your demon friends or your angel friends could save sam if I decided to take him with me? There are places in the universe beyond heaven and hell and purgatory. Places even someone like lucifer has no knowledge of. If I wanted with a thought I could fling the two of you to the very opposite ends of creation and you'd never find your way back.' and Dean is TERRIFIED because he's pissed death off on more than one occasion now and he absolutely believes that death would do what he's threatening.Â
But death surprises him, because he always does. 'You're very VERY lucky that for some utterly incomprehensible reason I like the two of you. Stubborn disrespectful ungrateful things that you are. I find this world...perhaps made marginally more interesting by your existence in it. But cease to try my patience Dean, because I will not be so polite about this the next time. If I allow Sam the great courtesy of deciding for himself to lay down his sword then you must respect that. You must respect me, Dean. Do you understand?'
and Death's looking at him like he wants a real answer, so Dean nods. He even thinks he means it. The cold of his hands is seeping through dean's jacket sleeves and sending chills all through him. It's impossible to have any secrets with death, he looks at dean and through dean and everything is laid bare before him whether dean likes it or not. He doesn't like it.
Death releases Dean from his hold, literally but not metaphorically. 'I hope that the next time we meet it will be on more pleasant terms.' Â It's not a smile on death's face, but it's not a glare or a scowl either. He's looking at dean like...if dean didn't know better the word he'd pic would be fond. Piercing, still, radiating an aura of overwhelming power that makes dean feel a weird distinct urge to prostrate himself, and hell maybe the fact that he can actually stand in death's presence and look him in the face is either a great triumph or a great disrespect he doesn't know. But Death seems to not mind. He's looking not-fondly at dean and then he's taking dean's hand and pressing something into his palm and then he's just gone again, no goodbye no final warning, just like he was never there at all.Â
Except...Dean opens his hand to see what death had given him. It's a ring. Not The Ring, he's never ever doing that again. No, this one is gold and mostly very plain, save for a tiny ivory engraved skull where one might ordinarily expect to find a gemstone. For a minute Dean thinks that death just has a really weird sense of humor and giving him a literal death's head was some kind of joke, but then he remembers something bobby told him and sam about once, some very long time ago. That people in medieval times used to wear skulls and things just like this, that they were called memento mori and in latin that meant...
(Sam catches him a week and a half later twirling it around his ring finger and asks him jokingly when he got married. Dean tells him to shut the fuck up, but he leaves the ring where it is)
