Museum of the Land of Frankincense by Tony Via Flickr: Day 101, Port 34, Country 18; Salalah, Oman: CMV World Cruise Inside the Museum where many artefacts found the area from the Neolithic period up to the last century. A very interesting museum. It was the crossing over the Arabian Sea after leaving India and entering the Gulf of Aden that the Columbus needed armed guards. Many small yachts are captured and the sailors held hostage by Pirates in the area. The Pirates can originate mainly from Somalia. Since 2000 there has also been a large number of larger ships mainly fishing vessels attacked but also a growing number of larger freight ships as well.

Al Baleed by Tony Via Flickr: Day 101, Port 34, Country 18; Salalah, Oman: CMV World Cruise Just outside the Museum of the Land of Frankincense, was the old waterway and the remnants of the Al Balled port. Baleed belong to the 12th-century trading port of Zafar. Frankincense was shipped from here to India in exchange for spices. Little is known about the port’s demise.

Outside where a row of Frankincense trees, some in flower. Boswellia sacra is a tree in the Burseraceae family. It is the primary tree in the genus Boswellia from which frankincense, a resinous dried sap, is harvested. It is native to the Arabian Peninsula (Oman, Yemen), and northeastern Africa (Somalia).

We only had 10 minutes here so it was a choice for me to go inside or get some captures from around the outside. I chose to stay outside. From a website describing the Mosque: “The Sultan Qaboos Mosque towers over the city centre, welcoming thousands of worshippers for prayers each day since its completion in 2009. Inside, a crystal chandelier hangs from an intricately carved 36-meter (118-foot) dome, and a 20-ton handwoven carpet with 115 million individual knots covers the floor.” We then drove around the corner to the Al Hosn palace. We didn’t go inside but had time outside the high walls surrounding the complex. I think we could had had more time at the mosque.
