Funny hearing the words “your sister” come out of Mulder’s mouth when he talks to Scully’s brother in Redux II. Do you think they felt wrong in his mouth as he said them? I’m sorry about your sister. Like “someone else’s sister” represents at any capacity the caliber of his relationship with her. Does he know? Does Bill know that Scully orbits Mulder like the Moon orbits the Earth? Steady, trustworthy, all-encompassing. That she unknowingly navigates the ebb and flow of his heart’s tides and he lets her, shifting himself across her gravitational axis. Your sister. Your daughter. Your partner. No, he thinks, there is nothing of her that is yours. Nothing of her that is mine. There is only the beckoning rays of her light I’m allowed to let guide me, and the cold, shadowed chasm that will be left in the wake of her departure.
