Alexander I of Russia
Emperor Alexander I (1777 - 1825), ruled Russia from 1801 to 1825, navigating the Napoleonic Wars, attempting early domestic reforms, and shifting toward religious conservatism in his later years. Born in St. Petersburg, he was raised by his grandmother Catherine the Great and took power after his father Paul I was killed.
Catherine the Great raised him directly, giving him an Enlightenment education through Swiss tutor FrΓ©dΓ©ric-CΓ©sar de La Harpe. His father, Tsar Paul I, ruled as an unpredictable tyrant and was assassinated in March 1801, leading Alexander to the throne.
