Iâm home for the weekend and itâs always the hardest to run when Iâm back home. When I lived here I cared little, even though the village creep used to watch me run and shout weird things at me which I could still hear through my headphones. Anyway now when I come home Iâm back to the ethnic parent restrictions. Which will surprise you considering Iâm in my late 20s. Letâs break it down:
1) You canât run too early in the morning/too late at night because youâre out on your own in a small village and no one is around if something happens.
2) You canât run while the shop is open because everyone will look at you and then come and tell us in the shop.
3) You canât run when itâs raining because you will fall.
4) You canât run when itâs windy because you/something will fall.
5) You canât run when itâs sunny because youâll get heatstroke.
6) You canât run on Saturday morning because I have work to do and you running is going to delay my morning.
7) I donât like your running route. Itâs not safe. I donât know why you run anyway.
Is this an ethnic parent thing? I donât understand why they canât understand that me even lacing up my trainers is a big deal. Thereâs so many rules and regulations to follow. Running is just free time. Which apparently is both unsafe and unnecessary. Or so I am taught and told.
And now itâs Sunday morning, itâs Fatherâs Day. My dad has gone to the cash and carry to buy stock for the shop, my mom is making food for my brother to take home and I am standing in the shop, serving customers, in my full running gear and sports bra. I have been ready to go for an hour and a half and lo and behold - now Iâm not going. If I go now, I wonât be able to help when dad comes back, and Mom wonât be ready in time for us to leave at 1pm on the dot to go out and watch the cricket. Itâs all a horrible timescale here wherein we never have enough time, my brother never makes time for anyone but himself, my parents never have ANY time and I canât seem to get five minutes to myself.
Are these excuses?
