ALEX ALBON'S BIG BREAK

"Actually, before I even say like that, I have a good story about the Intrepid driver's program. From 2010, I was the- I beat Max to become this- It was called like the world champion. European world champion. I moved up categories so from KF3, I jumped straight to KF1. Before I jumped across, I was kind of the reference driver/the one they would ask "okay, who should we choose for next year". Because basically they had this huge amount of drivers wanting to be in the team for the following year. Charles, George was there, Esteban Ocon was there. And there was a few of them. I was kind of like the reference driver and I would say 'Listen, these guys are quick. These guys maybe not so quick.' And yeah, so George and Charles were there at that day."

[So essentially, we're looking for your big break but everyone else's big break is because of what you said at that time.]

"They were always gonna sign- Probably. Uhm, but yes. Yeah, maybe so. Maybe so"

[Do you ever let them forget it?]

"Uhm, I think they've already forgotten it. I don't know if they remember. I've never actually brought it up to them. I remember George though. Cause I remember George was just this young young kid. But he was only- He grew- We're the same height now but back then he was much shorter than I was. And uh. And yeah I remember he- Cause I think Charles joined later during the year. But George was already the quick one out of the guys that I- Everyone else I could just pull away and drive away but George was the one who I was like 'this guy can- He is keeping up.'"

[He's alright.]

"Yeah, he is alright. He's alright. This guy. So yeah."

GEORGE RUSSELL'S BIG BREAK

[And the first question really is uh in an earlier one of these podcast in these series, Alex Albon says he basically was the talent scout that picked you out for the Intrepid driver's program.]

"He was. Ahhh. Here we go."

[So is that true?]

"That is a memory that has- has passed by on me. But I do recall so Intrepid driver program was a team manufacturer in go karting that in between 2010 and 2013, they were the team to be with. And they would do these days, sort of an assessment of a load of drivers. And Alex was their driver at the time. And I arrived and um- You'd do a bit of an assessment and 'how do you fare against you know world champion at the time Alex Albon?' So uhm. Yeah maybe he made my career here. So all of the talk of me helping giving him a Williams drive. Maybe it all started vice versa."

[Yeah, you've just repaid the favor]

"Absolutely. Absolutely."

[He did say that you were tough to shake off. So you were a year below him I think.]

When Alex comes back, George is ecstatic but the idea that Alex could disappear in an instant haunts him daily. He becomes clingier, more possessive, and jealous of others being around Alex because what if they take him away.

“They've known each other since they were kids. They climbed the ladder together from karting to F1. George spent a lot of time/more or less lived with Alex's family at a time. When Alex was struggling in F1 George stood up for him. Once they went to Portugal on a training camp together, they pushed their beds together and got the same throat infection (told by George himself on live TV https://www.tumblr.com/raceweek/638290875252981760/what-if-we-went-to-a-training-camp-and-made-a?source=share). When George's move to an other team was set he lobbied at his old team for Alex (who at the time was not racing) to get his seat (the team principal said they had to actively ignore George while they were making a decision). After Alex went into a coma after his appendectomy Alex's family called George so he could get prepared for the worst case scenario. Also George likes posting shirtless photos on instagram and Alex always teases him about it. Also George just casually walks into his old team's garage all the time to get Alex when the drivers have to go somewhere or just to say hi. OH! Also!
