just found out something really interesting that ties into divorcegate.
i’m a massive divorcegate truther, but obviously nothing has been confirmed (and might never be.) however, i’m sure you guys wouldn’t be surprised to hear this isn’t the first time it’s been rumoured a breakup caused increased violence against women/creative changes in a show.
divorcegate is mostly about byler, but a lot of us have complaints about the way eleven’s arc was handled (and how the last season feels kinda sexist to be honest.)
the saw movie series is one of my favorites, but one movie i will always fucking hate is saw 7. now a big issue of mine is that saw 7 is so gross and violent towards women. well…
this is betsy russell and mark burg. betsy portrayed jill, who is john kramer’s wife in the show (and she is ripped to pieces in this movie btw) and mark was a producer on the show. the two were engaged...and broke it off right before saw 7 was written/released. some people suspect that he used some of his anger towards his relationship to influence the increased violence (especially against women) in the franchise - something that wasn't really a huge thing, especially compared to other early 2000's horror movies. not to mention that jill lost her baby and went through so much damn trauma just to be given an arc of torture and death. kinda like the little girl who didn’t even know what clothes she liked who hardly got to be normal? uh huh.
i just find it interesting that there are speculations like this on another piece of media, and that they match up with the stuff everyone has been saying about stranger things. saw 7 is agreed within the fandom to be one of the worst installments of a pretty good and fleshed out franchise. it truly felt like a massive fumble. just like we thought about vol 2 and 3. also, it's clear that there was a shift somewhere on the production team. someone made a choice to increase the violence, to disregard some plot points/ not serve the greater narrative (oftentimes trap victims in these movies are somehow related to john kramer in some way - in this movie, the opening kill has zero relation to him whatsoever.)
starting to wonder if ross duffer really did pull a mark burg here. got really mad his relationship ended, and decided to kill his female main character and also get rid of the logical writing (that also happened to point to byler.) interesting...
