I’ve been having a ton of fun with Root!

Vagabonding

Finally getting to try out the Root Underworld expansion! We used Eagles, Moles, Crows, and Vagabond on the Mountain map. The new factions are cool, and the Corvid Conspiracy particularly seems like a very nice replacement for the somewhat problematic Woodland Alliance; the play feel is quite similar although the Corvids are more diffuse, but they just don’t seem to have quite the same explosive growth curve. Still, you have to keep an eye on those guys. I was trying to keep expectations in check, just because I though Vast was so obviously terrible; so I was happy that both factions seemed to fit quite nicely into the Root aesthetic and compliment the existing factions. I think the Moles particularly seem to have benefited from a year and a half of Root being out there and getting played a lot - they have similar fixed action budget, but they have a little more in terms of ways to expand their general capabilities over time. I feel like variety is the lifeblood of this game, so new factions and new maps are all win. Fun game of Root with a couple new players and the classic factions. I feel like I finally played the Marquise competently. I didn’t win, but by recognizing the threat of the Alliance and keeping them down early, as well as focusing on the Rabbit clearings for building a few Workshops to get access to the very useful crafting cards that give you extra actions, it helped open up the game and it was very tight. The Vagabond actually won, too! They took the Tinker, which seems a pretty strong character; I think part of the Vagabond problem is that we were messing with the expansion identities, which seem pretty weak (or at least highly specialized).
