Get the sack (be fired)
First attested in English in the early 19th century, get the sack is theorised to have originated form tradespeople. When working, people would carry the tools they needed in large bags or sacks. When their work was finished or the employer no longer required their services, they would hand the worker their bag, hence the phrase became generalised to anybody being dismissed from their job. This theory has no concrete evidence, however there's also no evidence for a different etymology to my knowledge.
