Tiny Grammar Cheatsheet: Hyphens, En, and Em Dashes
Hyphens ( - ) are the shortest and are used to:
‣ link elements in a compound word: dog-owner
‣ separate some affixes from the rest of the word: pre-election
‣ (sometimes) take the place of the en dash indicating range: pages 24-66
‣ indicate stuttering or abrupt interruption: M-m-micheal?
‣ spell out a word letter for letter: I said we are c-l-o-s-e-d.
En Dashes ( – ) are shorter than em dashes. They indicate a range and could usually be replaced with "from" and "to":
✓ I lived in New York 2015–2020. ⭤ I lived in New York from 2015 to 2020.
But: ✗ I lived in New York from 2015–2020.
Em Dashes ( — ) are longest. They are used:
‣ to call attention to the content they separate from the rest of the sentence and emphasize it
‣ in place of commas and parentheses: When he finally apologized—after four weeks of silence—she was no longer interested in hearing him out.
‣ in place of a colon, especially to summarize, explain, or expand upon the preceding clause in a dramatic manner: After months of deliberation, the jurors reached a unanimous verdict—guilty.
‣ to summarize or note the common link in a list: Sweet, sour, salty, bitter—all tastes the cook loved to experiment with.
‣ to set off or introduce defining phrases and lists: The shop's selection of three flavors—strawberry, mint, and chocolate—was never enough variety.
‣ to indicate a new direction: I agree with you, but James—he felt otherwise.
‣ to indicate hesitation: Well, I think—Yeah, I guess it is concerning.
Fun Fact: en dashes received their name because the dash is the length of the letter N, while the em dash is the length of the letter M.

As somebody learning another language, I think it would be really fucking funny to become an English teacher in a different country just so I could give all of my students Boston accents. Imagine a completely isolated population of non-American college students all sitting in a classroom repeating “I pahked my cah rin Hahvuhd Yahd.”
Sometimes, reading English as a non native speaker can be very alienating. You get sentences that sound just like this: He webbled. Quibled the dibble, even. The what😭 It was very hudlish inside of the house. Very gausy. She gave him a bifsish look. The nabby was very wruddely this time of year. Maybe he would try to be more grubby, then. Completely parious. The fabric felt pretty geffy, like a shurd or a blue paskery. No one knew how dremgy she actually felt. He let out a biffled mun, gerning in seger pudy.

I would like to bring your attention to two fundraisers that are near and dear to my heart.
@elhamhamdan-gaza is a young woman trying to survive in Gaza with her family. She was a top student at university until October 2023, when she and her family were displaced from their home in Khan Younis and forced to flee to Rafah. After the invasion in Rafah, they returned to their home in Khan Younis only to find it burned. They had no choice but to live in it. Elham and her family desperately need funds for blankets and clothes, because winter is here and nights in Gaza are very cold right now.
Elham's campaign is very low on funds! So far they have only been able to raise £594 and they desperately need more support. Please donate to them if you are able, and share this post and campaign with as many people as you can.
This campaign was verified by the Butterfly Effect Project (instagram) and is number 1180 on their spreadsheet, which you can access through the link on their instagram profile.

Secondly, @drdarine is a young woman who is a medical student in Gaza. Despite being displaced and suffering hardships we can only imagine, Darine is continuing her studies and helping out others in the refugee camps and shelters in southern Gaza.
Her family consists of seven people, one of them being my friend @dawoudi who is selflessly and unfailingly helping many other families in Gaza by verifying their fundraisers and promoting them on Tumblr. Everyday I see more campaigns added that he has verified, providing an important service to the many families in Gaza that need our help.
Darine's family has been fundraising since February, which is almost ten months! Despite that, they have only been able to raise $5,765, 19% of their goal. Progress on their campaign is extremely slow, often needing to wait multiple days for another donation to come in. We can do better than that.
This campaign was vetted by @gazavetters, and is number 15 on their spreadsheet, which you can find in the pinned post on their profile.
You can contribute to Darine's campaign by clicking on the link below:

When I first started reading Linked Universe fanfics my english was terrible (It's not like much has changed either jsjajsjajsa), so I used Google Translate to read the stories.
The thing is, the translator isn't accurate at all, so it translated "vet" (Veteran, Legend's nickname) as "veterinarian" in spanish. So I was confused all this time because he kept being called "veterinario" but I didn't see him doing veterinarian stuff other than turning into a pink bunny.
I also didn't remember him being a veterinarian in the games, to add to the confusion. I realized much later. I'm not very smart :)
