If you are looking for a prompt would love the first time Kaz has to take care of the baby by himself.
SAINTS Anon, this was a great idea. It ran away from me a little bit, but enjoy more Papa Kaz with a HEALTHY scoop of Kanej (slightly steamy Kanej? I had fun)
~
Kaz looked down at the blueprint on his desk, feeling Inejâs eyes on him, watching, waiting for his reaction. When sheâd lured him into his office a minute ago this had not been what he thought they would be doing. âRoeder came up with this all on his own?â
She nodded. âApparently he ran it by Anika half a dozen times before showing it to me. Itâs pretty good, isnât it?â
His eyes scanned every detail of the building, the notes written on the side, the vault make and model up in the corner. âWell, itâs only a bank,â he said, straightening, looking back at her. âNothing too special about it. Though there is a certain⊠elegance, to the plan, I can admit.â
Inej grinned. âNot to Roeder, Iâm sure.â
âOf course not.â He tapped the print. âBut he knows he doesnât need to check something like this with me, so whatâs the catch?â
Light as a feather, Inej hopped up onto the corner of his desk. From the little smile on her face he knew just what she was going to say.
âHis ankle still hasnât fully healed, and he doesnât think he can handle a roof this steep without hurting it again or falling. Especially not with the weather recently.â
It had been an exceptionally icy January. âTypical. Dreaming up a plan he canât even see through.â
Inej leaned back, resting her weight on her arms. âHe was looking for some extra help. He wanted us both.â
âWho doesnât?â Kaz looked back down at the plan. âItâs a job for the Wraith, that much is certain. Especially if our budget-friendly replacement is out of commission.â
âKaz!â
âRoeder knows heâs always been my second choice,â he said, grinning. âHeâs not a terrible replica, but when youâve got the originalâŠâ
âKaz,â she repeated, covering his hand with her own, halting its steady progress up her thigh. âI all but told him we would do it.â
He sighed. âInej, darling, you are free to do this and any other job if you wish. But we canât both be gone all night.â
She squeezed his hand. âWell, I talked to Wylan--â
âAbsolutely not,â he interrupted. âSheâs not even one year old yet!â
âRosie would be perfectly safe with the Van Ecks. Marya even offered to come spend the night here, in the nursery, if we preferred that.â
âNo,â he said, shaking his head. âRosannaâs too young for us to let someone else look after her.â
âJesper and Wylan have had two babies of their own, my love,â she reminded him gently. âThey are more than capable of taking care of Rosie for one night, especially with Marya there.â
âBut Cassidy is even younger than Rosanna,â he pointed out. âPlus Fritz and Ada? Theyâve already got their hands full.â
âFritz and Ada are going to be sleeping the entire time. We could drop Rosie off at ten or eleven bells, and weâd be back before dawn.â
He shook his head again, more emphatically this time. âNo. No, one of us has to watch her.â
âKazâŠâ
Even that wide-eyed, imploring look she gave him couldnât move him. âSheâs too little,â he said.
Inej sighed, then touched his cheek. âAlright. Weâll stay home.â
âIâll stay home,â he corrected, moving his hand from her thigh to jab at the blueprint on his desk. âThis plan needs you, not me. Look at this vault--if they need me to crack that model then they donât deserve whateverâs inside.â
The melodic sound of her laugh reminded him of what heâd hoped theyâd be doing now that their baby girl had fallen asleep. After only two hours of rocking...
He brought his hand back to her leg, squeezing the inside of her knee. âIâll take care of Rosie,â he said, leaning in to kiss the tip of her nose. âTell Roeder youâre in.â
She smiled up at him, leaning forward to rest her arms across his shoulders. âAlright, I think I will. Iâm sure the job will be even easier knowing Rosie is in such capable hands.â
He hummed his agreement, threading his fingers through her hair to draw her closer. âYes, and speaking of capable handsâŠâ

Rosannaâs first birthday was just over a month away, but this was the first time Kaz had ever had to take care of her by himself. Most of the time he and Inej had both been home, and on the occasions when business called him into the city he was sure to never be gone for very long.
Everything else theyâd done, theyâd done together; whether that was dinner at the Van Ecksâ or day trips to their country home. It had been a strange year--both more restful and more exhausting than any other time in Kazâs life, but he didnât mind. He didnât mind that heâd told himself heâd only be stepping back from full-time involvement with the Dregs for a few months and nearly a year had gone by with meetings only twice a week. He didnât even mind Anika and Pim loudly exclaiming âhe lives!â every time they saw him, like heâd gone missing in action months ago and wasnât just working from home across the city.
Although this time they barely greeted him at all. âIs Rosie still awake?â Pim asked, one leg still hanging over the window ledge.
Inej looked up from across the kitchen, where she was stretching with one foot propped up on the back of a chair. She nodded in Kazâs direction, where a happy and wide-awake infant sat on his knee.
âRosie!â he boomed. âWhat are you still doing up at this hour?â
She babbled her own response, which Inej interpreted. âIt seems someone neglected to wake her up when her afternoon nap was over.â She gave Kaz a meaningful look. âSo she might even be awake when I get home.â
Anika grinned as her feet hit the floor behind Pim. âAh, well the punishment fits the crime on that one, Brekker. Hope youâve got a pot of coffee on.â
âShe was fast asleep,â he explained. âNo one likes to be woken when theyâre sleeping that soundly.â
Anika shrugged. âJust make sure to keep telling yourself that when youâre still awake at three bells.â
Roeder appeared at the window a moment later, landing on the kitchen floor easily enough for a man who got the cast off his ankle only two weeks ago. His smile widened as he saw Rosanna. âRosie! You stayed up to see us off?â
Rosie cooed happily, waving her little hands at the spider.
âJust in time, old man,â Pim said, clapping him on the shoulder. âKaz was just saying you could borrow his cane for the job!â
Anika scoffed. âSaints--first he canât get his own gimmick, now he canât even get his own cane to go with it?â She wrinkled her nose. âI thought better of you, Roeder.â
Kaz smirked. âAnikaâs right,â he said. âIâve been doing the crippled thing for years.â He lifted his cane. âHow about I break both your arms instead?â
âYeah Roed, give you something with a little original flavour!â Pim said, still laughing.
âYeah, yeah, youâre all so funny,â Roeder grumbled. âJust as funny as you were six weeks ago. How about a joke with some original flavour?â
âItâs called a callback,â Pim said. âYours is just a knockoff.â
Roeder frowned, face as sour as if he were sucking on a lemon. âThis is why I only like Inej,â He said.
âAnd because she does your job for you when you get an owie,â Anika said with an exaggerated pout. âYou mustnât forget to say thank you.â
Roeder threw up his hands. âThis is still my plan! Without me there would be no job!â
âAlright,â Inej interjected, pressing her lips closed to keep from smiling. âIf we donât get started on this soon there really wonât be a job. Kaz, you have the blueprint?â
He placed the tube containing the rolled-up paper on the table with a flourish. Rosie reached for it, so Kaz shifted her onto his good leg, bouncing his knee gently to keep her occupied while they went over the plan one more time.
It was a good plan; Kaz had only two suggestions to improve it, and it only took them about twenty minutes to go through the plan once more from start to finish, working out any remaining wrinkles.
For all he was mocking Roeder, even Pim was rather extraneous to the job. All the heavy lifting would really be done by Anika and Inej, and if everything went smoothly, Roeder and Pim would do little more than stand watch.
He scanned the notes once more. If heâd agreed to do the job it would probably be him and Inej running the show by themselves.
It was almost enough to make him wish he was joining them. It had been years since theyâd done a job like this, just the two of them; with more money than they knew what to do with, Inej didnât think highly of jobs that involved stealing for âno reason.â
Luckily, Roeder had found a bank with a sufficiently predatory history to satisfy Inej.
He looked down at Rosanna, who kept trying to reach the tube the blueprint had been kept in, repeating âba, baâ to herself. Bank?
He smoothed a hand over her belly, eliciting a giggle. There will be other jobs, he thought, fighting a smile.
âAlright, that about does it, I think,â Roeder said, checking the clock on the wall. âShall we?â
Inej reached for Rosanna, who reached back enthusiastically, settling instantly into her motherâs hold. âGoodbye meja. Donât keep Papa up too late, okay?â She turned her cheek. âMay I have a kiss?â
Rosanna obliged, leaning forward to press her lips to Inejâs cheek with a loud âmwah!â
The three Dregs practically broke out in applause, and as they all took turns saying goodbye to Rosie, with a little prompting, they each got their own slightly-damp kiss.
âShe learns a new trick every time I see her!â Pim exclaimed.
âA trick?â Roeder scowled. âGhezen, Pim, sheâs not a puppyâŠâ
Anika gave a dramatic salute, backing up toward the window. âDo svidaniya, Brekker. And donât worry, I promise we wonât make your wife save all our asses tonight.â She winked, slipping nimbly out the window.
âWe canât guarantee that,â Pim said, following her with less than half his partnerâs gracefulness. âBut weâll do our best! Night boss! Night Rosie!â
âBa! Ba!â Rosie called.
Roeder passed Rosanna back to Inej. âIt should go smoothly, I think,â he said, scratching the back of his head. He looked between the two of them. âWe seemed to work out any issues.â
Inej nodded, smiling up at him. âI think so, too. Itâs a good plan, Roeder.â
He grinned, flushing a little when Kaz nodded.
âItâs not half bad,â he agreed. âAnd if anything goes wrong, of course, just blame Pim.â
He nodded, doing his best to look serious again. âWill do. Thanks for your help, boss.â He turns to Inej, opening his mouth to say something before realising he should probably give them a minute. âRight, well, see you out there. Weâll wait for you down at the canal.â
Once they were alone, Inej passed Rosie back to him, then surprised him by taking his face in both her hands, drawing him down to kiss him soundly. Her lips moved almost hungrily against his as her tongue explored his mouth as if for the first time. Her body was as flush to his as it could get.
When she eventually pulled back Kaz felt as though heâd been burned.
He bent his head to kiss her again. He didnât care if she was late meeting the others down by the water. That could wait. It all could wait.
They separated when Rosanna started squirming, wanting to be put down. Kaz wasnât about to just set her on the kitchen floor, so he moved her to his other arm, trading her for his cane.
Inej watched the exchange, then looked back up at him with an expression that made him want to tell Roeder just to throw the whole thing because the Wraith was his for tonight.
âI wish you were coming,â she said, a small smile gracing her lovely face. âNext time?â
He kissed her again, quickly. âNext time,â he agreed. Next time a job like this came up Ros would probably be old enough to be left with Marya⊠maybe even left at the Van Ecksâ. If it was a short job--overnight, like this one. âIâll see you when you get home,â he said.
She raised an eyebrow. âBoth of you should be sleeping when I get home.â
He shook his head. âIâll wait for you.â
Without a sound, she was out the window, disappearing like a shadow in the yard.
âMama?â Rosie cooed, reaching after her.
Kaz kissed the top of her head. âYouâre stuck with me tonight, love.â
Rosie turned back to him, her tiny eyebrows drawn together. âPa⊠papa?â
He grinned. It had only been a week since sheâd first said it, but he knew it would never get old. âThereâs my clever girl,â he said, grabbing the rolled-up blueprint off the table and tucking it under his arm. âNow, letâs go get some coffee.â
~~~
The job did go well--smooth as clockwork, Inej thought. She was home an hour early, and since she was alone she even used the front door.
It was pitch black as she crept silently up the staircase, but she wasnât surprised to see the light coming from the end of the hall, leaking around the edges of the door to Rosieâs nursery.
She pushed the door open, slipping in without a sound. The lamp on the table by the rocking chair spilled a warm, dim light over the room, and over its two occupants.
Inej pressed a hand to her heart. A few picture books sat on the little table, and blocks, stuffed toys, and a rattle or two lay scattered all across the orange and gold rug. Amidst the chaos, in a little spot on the rug cleared of the worst of the debris, lay Kaz and Rosie. Rosie lay with her head turned to her Papa, who was half on his back, half on his side, as if heâd fallen asleep watching her. A pair of twins, they were, with their messy black hair, fair skin, and half of her heart each.
Rosie was in her pajamas, at least, though Kaz was still dressed but for his jacket and shoes, which hung over the back of the rocking chair and sat by the edge of the rug, respectively. His cane rested across the seat of the rocking chair.
Inej scooped up Rosie, who opened her dark eyes sleepily to blink up at her. She might have tried to give a little smile, but even that effort seemed too much, and she was fast asleep before Inej even had her in the crib, pulling the little blanket over her legs.
When she turned, Kaz was rolling onto his side, brushing what looked like cracker crumbs off his waistcoat.
She sat on the rug beside him, criss-crossing her legs. âHow was your night?â
He blinked a few times, nearly as disoriented as his daughter. âLovely.â A few more blinks. âWe read books, we played with⊠with Ollie--â he reached behind his back, shifting, pulling the stuffed crow from beneath him. âAte some animal crackers. Tried to teach her âRosie,â which didnât go terribly well.â He grimaced, lying back down on the rug. âDrank some coffee. Not enough coffee, apparently.â
Inej hopped over him, noticing how Kaz seemed to wake a little more with her sitting atop his stomach. âHow does Rosie take her coffee?â
He watched her. âOne cream, and one sugar.â
She hummed. âWeâll have to do something about that. Sugar isn't good for babies.â
He shook his head, still watching her. âNo, itâs not.â He lifted onto his elbows. âHow was the job?â
She grinned. âOh, it was perfect, Kaz, you would have loved it.â
He smiled back. âIâm sure I would have. Anika didnât have trouble with the vault?â
âNo, she didnât seem to.â She shrugged delicately. "Although she wouldnât be my first choice for a safe-cracker, if I had my pick.â
He raised an eyebrow. âOh?â
She leaned down, placing a gentle kiss on his left cheek, then his right. âNo,â she said. His jaw was just the tiniest bit scratchy with stubble. âSheâs very good, but only because she learned from the best, Iâll wager.â
She could hear him swallow as she kissed the left corner of his mouth, then the right. âSheâs more of a budget-friendly alternative?â
Inej laughed, her hands reaching for the knot of his neck tie. âI wouldnât say that--â
He grinned wolfishly, sitting up a little straighter. âThatâs alright, Iâll say it for you.â
She rolled her eyes, but kept untying the knot, tucking his tie pin into a pocket of her quilted vest. âIâll just say that I too prefer the original.â
He stayed still while she detached the collar of his shirt, slipping it free. âYou donât seem tired, for having just spent your night robbing a bank,â he observed.
âNo,â she agreed. âI feel rather awake.â She started on the buttons of her shirt, then paused. âYou see, my husband told me heâd be waiting up for me.â
Kazâs eyes were dark. âAh. Heâs an untrustworthy sod, that husband of yours.â
âHe can be,â she said, then kissed him fiercely. She pulled back a little, resting her forehead against his. âBut not to me.â
Kaz sat up, and Inej lifted just slightly to keep her weight off his bad leg. He rested his hands on her waist. âStill, heâll have to make it up to you.â
She combed his hair back with her fingers, as though there was any hope of it staying tidy for long. âHe does not,â she said. She smoothed her thumb over his mouth, tugging oh-so-gently at his bottom lip. âHe has no amends to make. He only fell asleep because he was being the most loving, attentive father to our baby girl. He is more than I could have asked for.â She kissed his forehead. âAnd for that reason--in addition to so many others--I love him more than I could ever say.â
Hey thank YOU I had so much fun writing those headcanons and dreaming about this wee family đ€ wrote this at work today; hope you like it!
~
He didnât normally take meetings at the house, and even more rarely did he take them this late at night. He and Inej had agreed to keep Dregs business out of their home, when possible (it wasnât always possible--sometimes Pim was a clumsy oaf and fell through the window on a job around the corner and needed stitched up on their kitchen table), but tonight it was just Anika and Roeder and some plans for expanding their export business. Really, it was barely Dregs-related. Nearly half of the plan was even legal.
âWhat about the warehouses?â
Anika shook her head, yawning behind her hand. âNo issues. Weâve got all the right documentation, and even then the Stadwatch donât even know those units are ours, so weâre fully in the clear once the permits come through.â
He turned to Roeder. âAnd how are the permits coming?â
He sighed. âSittart is pretty clean, we havenât dug up anything very helpful, yet.â
âWell if blackmail isnât going to work, is there something we can offer him to get his cooperation? Make it a fair exchange?â
Roeder shrugged. âHe doesnât seem like a particularly ambitious man. Seems pretty happy where he is at work, no mistress or dirty laundry or anything.â
People with no ambition and no imagination always made his life difficult. âWell, what about his family? Does he have a child or a sibling or someone who has aspirations of some kind?â
âI think he might have a niece at the university? And his father has some sort of condition that requires a nurse coming by their house twice a week.â
Kaz frowned. âWell, see what you can do about that. About the niece--Iâll make contact with the hospital to see whatâs going on with the father. Weâre going to need something--what is it Jas?â
Anika nearly fell out of her chair when she turned and saw the four-year-old whoâd seemed to appear out of thin air between her and Roeder. Even the spider looked startled. Thatâs what they get for forgetting to lock the door, he thought proudly.
Jasmijn rubbed her eyes. One of her braids had come loose, and the long auburn hair on that side hung in a tangle. He must not have tied it tight enough when he put the girls to bed. âWhereâs Mama?â she asked, voice scratchy from sleep.
âSheâs gone away for a little bit, remember darling? On her ship?â
âOh.â She looked up at Roeder, then Anika, her eyes widening at the stitches above Anikaâs eyebrow and the purple and yellow bruising that reached down to her cheekbone. She pointed. âWhat happened?â
âOh, me and Uncle Pim had a very mean man at work on Friday. Donât worry though baby girl,â she leaned close, winking. âWe took care of him.â
She looked up, eyes wide, brows raised in wonder. âHow?â
With a flick of her wrist, an extendable baton slipped out of Anikaâs sleeve and into her hand. âTaught him a lesson with this. Here, you can hit Uncle Roeder with it if you want.â
Jasmijn reached out eagerly, stopping only when Kaz cleared his throat.
âJas,â he said, the warning in his tone clear. âWhere are you supposed to be right now?â
She feigned innocence. âI donât know.â
âJasmijn...â
Her little face fell. âDa⊠I-I had a bad dream.â She turned her most pleading, wide-eyed look his way, âCan I stay up a little longer?â
She was joined in her begging by Anika and Roeder, who looked at him with matching hopeful expressions. They were far too eager to let his daughter derail their meeting. They were here to do work.
He sighed. âCome here, darling. Can you be good for twenty minutes?â
She nodded enthusiastically. âYes--Iâll be good--I promise.â Without waiting for a further invitation she ran around his desk, practically leaping onto his lap.
Kaz grimaced as her weight landed abruptly on his bad leg. He lifted her to the other side, and she immediately drew her legs up to sit in a little ball, nestling close against his chest. âIâll be good--Iâll be very quiet,â she whispered.
Roeder and Anika were both losing the fight to keep their faces impassive. Kaz gave them both a hard look, even as he shifted so he could hold Jas securely with only one arm. It wasnât easy to be intimidating while cradling a small child, but after a few years it was an art heâd all but perfected.
Anika folded her hands on her lap. âWell, I for one would very much like to hear Jasmijnâs input on our plan.â
Jas turned her face into Kazâs shirt, trying to smother her giggle.
He raised an eyebrow. âJas has to earn her way to her own seat at these meetings,â he said. âBesides, if I give her too much influence now, pretty soon Roeder will be out of a job. Sheâs already much stealthier than he is.â
Roeder scowled. âHey, between you and Inej... she has an unfair genetic advantage.â
Kaz looked down at his daughter, a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. âJas, love, how old are you?â
She held up four fingers, returning his smile with a shy one of her own. âThis many.â
Anika grinned at her companion, also holding up four fingers. âThis many, Roeder. How old are you again?" She pretended to think. "I donât think I have enough fingers. Or toes!â
âDoesnât help that youâre not very good at math,â he fired back. âDo you even know how many this many is, Anika?â
Kaz cut them off before they could run away with this little spat. Honestly, his four and seven-year old were better behaved than these two. âThe niece at the university, Roeder. Look into her.â He turned to Anika. âUntil we get these permits and the contract, I need you to make sure the Stadwatch donât look too closely at whatâs in those crates. Understood?â He barely waited for her nod before he turned to his other daughter. âRos, darling is everything alright?â
Both Dregs jumped several feet when they turned and saw Rosanna standing between them.
âGhezenâs tit!â Roeder cursed, clutching the arms of his chair. âHow the fu⊠how do you two do that?â
Ros just blinked at him, her wide eyes as dark as wet pavement. She tilted her head. âGhezenâs what?â
