Three weeks to the day after the solar flare, Carlos receives a cryptic text from his mom: come for lunch today?
He mulls it over; he loves his mother, and itâs no secret to anybody that knows him that heâs a total mamaâs boy, but thereâs got to be a reason behind her impromptu meal, and an evil part of his mind tells him it has to be bad news. She doesnât mention anything about his sisters joining them, and Carlos doesnât know if that should stress him out more or less. If itâs something bad, heâd assume that he and his sisters would find out at the same time â but that only leaves him more confused.
Sheâs a strong woman, and is a complete health-nut â ever since his abuela started having mobility issues, his motherâs been a champion for organic eating and natural sleep aids and doing yoga every morning. Carlos canât put bad news from the doctor completely off the table, but he starts to drift towards the other countless possibilities â and so he canât say no to her. Even if itâs his only day off that lines up with TKâs schedule, he spares a glance at his softly snoring boyfriend before figuring the manâs close enough with his own father that heâll have to understand a shift in plans. And so Carlos finds himself more alert than heâd been when heâd rubbed sleep from his eyes and initially checked his phone five minutes ago, thumbs hovering over the screen before he sends her a simple of course, mami, and sets about getting ready for the day after pressing a quick kiss to TKâs hairline.
Heâs showered and had his coffee and is trying to quietly get dressed when Carlos hears TK groan and grumble, clearly fighting between catching a little more sleep and getting out of bed. Carlos watches with a small smile as TK slowly sits up when he realizes heâs alone in bed, before their gazes catch, and his heart soars as TKâs eyes visibly light up at seeing him.
âEverything okay?â TK asks, voice still deep and groggy, and Carlos nods as he starts on buttoning up his shirt.
âWe might have to change our plans today,â Carlos says apologetically. âI reallyâfuck, I really wanted to spend he day with you, but my mom wants me to come over and she usually doesnât spring stuff like that on me unless thereâs something wrong, andââ
âHey,â TK cuts him off, and Carlos raises his brows at him. âItâs okay, seriously. Marjanâs been bugging me to take Buttercup to get some pampering, anyway.â
âYouâre the best,â Carlos says, and TK grins at him.
âDamn straight.â
TK tilts his head up, clearly looking for a kiss. Carlos huffs out a laugh and comes in close, so their mouths are nearly touching, before he whispers, âYou have no shame, do you.â
âNope,â TK grins, eyes crinkling in the corners, popping the p before he closes the space between them and gets the kiss he wanted. âIâll see you later, though?â
His eyes shine with hopefulness, and Carlos nods earnestly. âIâll text you when Iâm on my way home.â
Thereâs another brief kiss, before Carlos sighs as he presses their foreheads together.
âI hate just leaving on you,â Carlos admits, even though the thoughts surrounding what his momâs intentions are with lunch are swirling around his mind.
âIâll be fine,â TK says, ducking forward to press another kiss to the corner of Carlosâ mouth. âSay hi to your mom for me.â
Itâs only half a joke â TKâs been talking, metaphorically, about meeting Carlosâ family for a week or so. He mentions it whenever Carlos talks about childhood memories or a story from one of his sisters, noting that Carlos has known his dad technically even before he knew TK. But it never evolves from a few jokes, and even though Carlos wants nothing more than to continue to make their relationship solidified through introducing each other properly to the people that mean the most to them, he doesnât know how to seriously approach that subject.
Instead of trying now, Carlos leaves with a promised, âIâll see you later,â before he grabs his keys and phone and makes his way out of his home.
The half-hour drive goes by mostly in a blur, because heâs too caught up in what might unfold at the lunch. They usually try to have big family dinners bi-weekly, due to everyoneâs work schedules and his sisterâs kidsâ schedules, but he canât remember the last time a meal like this was just dropped on him the day-of. He does have the right state of mind to stop and grab his mom a bouquet of lilies, her favourite, before he pulls up to the humble farmhouse heâd lived in his whole childhood.
âIs everything okay?â
The words are out of his mouth within seconds of stepping into the house, half-startling his mother as she pours out two glasses of sweet tea.
âCanât I ask my favourite son to have lunch with me when I know itâs his day off?â
Carlos flushes a bit, handing the flowers to his mom as she pulls him in for a hug. âIâm your only son.â
âStill my favourite,â she grins, smacking a kiss on his cheek before she gestures toward the back deck. He follows her, taking a deep breath as he goes.
* * *
âI know something is up, baby.â
He'd been expecting something regarding her own well-being or health, or his abuela's, so when the conversation turns to him he's sort of confused. And Carlos has grown up hearing from people that he has his motherâs eyes, and as he looks into them now, he thinks he sees the similarities as she looks at him with a particular warmth laced with concern heâs been accustomed to since he was born.
âYou know, I saw an interesting photo of you the other day,â she says it off-handedly, but Carlos still manages to choke on his drink. She doesnât hesitate, going on to describe the picture he knows intimately because he posted it to his Instagram only forty-eight hours ago: him and TK, smiling as they stand close, too close to just be friendly to any onlooker, taken by Paul in the late hours of the night as they strolled around downtown after their shifts. He hadnât even considered his family seeing the photo, and he silently rues the day his sisters made their mother various social media accounts so she could keep up with their lives. Her voice turns soft, as she squeezes his arm and asks, âIs there something you want to tell me?â
âUh, I have to pee.â
He says it quickly enough that he can run off to inside the house, where the remnants of their lunch sits scattered over the counter. Carlos beelines for the bathroom and leans against the sink as he pulls out his phone.
how do you feel about my mom knowing about you?
seriously.
Carlos sends the messages to TK and taps his phone against the heel of his palm as he waits for a response. He thinks back to his motherâs implications â that she knows about them, is okay with them â and figures that he could always lie. Itâll look suspicious as hell, of course, after he just fucked off like that, but heâs never really brought any boyfriends around before. Mainly because heâs never been in a serious enough relationship to warrant that. But he thinks â he knows that thereâs something real between him and TK, and he wouldnât hate his mom and eventually his sisters knowing about him and meeting him and welcoming him into the fold of their family dynamic. But he needs to make sure this is still something TKâs okay with, that itâs going at his pace.
TK texts him back quickly, like always. i was serious about wanting to meet her someday. maybe even soon. so if you want to talk about me i support you.
youâre sure? Carlos texts back, as he feels his nerves starting to both tamper off and confusingly grow at the same time as he walks toward the backyard again, preparing to let his mother into this part of his life.
100%. tell her only the good things, i wanna impress her, TK replies, along with a string of heart emojis. Carlos huffs a little, quickly typing out, sheâll love you no matter what, before pocketing his phone and sliding back into his seat across from his mother.
âSorry,â he mumbles, meeting her eyes, and as he opens his mouth to continue, she quickly interjects.
âDonât lie to me, Carlos,â she warns, though thereâs warmth behind her words, a desperate plea to tell him that she wants to be included in this part of his life, no matter how new it might be. "You know you can talk to me."
So Carlos takes another deep breath, not really looking at his mother as he whispers: âI met someone, mami.â
He stares down at the ground; after a few seconds, he shifts his gaze to stare at the blooming gardens that live in clusters around the yard, various vegetables and flowers alike growing with vengeance as the summer welcomes them back into the world. When she makes a noise and he finally meets her gaze again, sheâs looking at him with nothing but fondness.
âOh, baby,â his mom is smiling, now, and she brings his face close to press a kiss to his forehead.
âItâs only been official for a few weeks but, um, I really like him,â Carlos admits, as his mother lovingly squeezes his hand. With a laugh, he adds: âI like him a lot. And Iâd love for you to meet him.â
His mother leans forward and curls her arms around him, like she did when he was a kid and he felt too small to conquer the world, and he immediately feels calm wash over him. âI would love to, mijo.â
(Carlos has a flash of a memory, then, coming out when he was fifteen years old and terrified but desperate for his truth to be known. He first told his older sister Camila, and then his mother a couple of days later, and he remembers so vividly how they hugged his then-tiny frame, all knobbly bones and a height he was getting used to, both of them supportive and loving and adamant that nothing would change how much they love him. He towers over both of them now, but he feels protected in his motherâs arms, like he always has).
As they pull out of the hug, his mother elbows him good-naturedly. âAlright, tell me about this boy then.â
His mamaâs grinning at him teasingly as she says it, and Carlos sits back and huffs out a laugh of his own, rubbing the back of his neck.
âHis nameâs TK. Heâs a firefighter,â Carlos says, barely holding back a bigger smile when his mother makes an approving face at that tidbit of information. âHeâsâheâs funny and beautiful and has the warmest heart.â
âIâm so happy for you,â his mother says, eyes bright with love, as if just listening to him talk about TK has made her realize how truly happy he is. And maybe it's allowed himself to look at inside retrospectively and figure out that yeah, he is happier than he's ever been. âIâm sure Iâll love him. Youâll have to bring him around.â
âI will,â Carlos promises, feeling like heâs floating on air. âOh, and heâs from New York City.â
He says it pointedly, knowing his motherâs always wanted to travel to the Big Apple.
âWell,â his mother says, âI guess weâll have to show your city boy how we do family dinners, then.â
She brings him in for another hug as she smiles, before she goes off to refill their glasses. Carlos sits back, considering the idea of TK being a part of his family, for good â and he finds that he wants nothing else in the world.

28. They ask you to pretend to be their date at a bar to prevent an ex from talking to them.
This one sort of had a mind of its own. I used to LOVE Nick and Norahâs Infinite Playlist, so I definitely took some inspiration from that. Itâs a bit longer so I put some of it under a cut. I hope you enjoy!Â
Nico Kim was having a great night. He was at a nice new bar with some new friends in a city where he had just moved to start a new job. So it seemed almost impossible that Lucas could even be here. How could he be in Seattle, of all places? But then memories came rushing back: Lucas talking about a grandmother who lived in the Pacific Northwest and summers spent at her place. Suddenly, he felt like the one who didnât belong. This was Lucasâs old stomping ground. He had real roots here, while Nico was some new transplant.
Lucas and Nico burned hot and fast. It was really great until it wasnât. Lucas complained that Nico was too busy all the time; Nico complained that Lucas should respect his medical resident schedule. It ended in a spectacular blaze when Nico walked in on Lucas cheating on him with not one, but two men, both mutual friends. It was alarming and heartbreaking, causing Nico to storm out vowing to never let Lucas back into his life.
But here he was, eyes boring into Nico from across this random Seattle bar. Nico felt like he couldnât breathe. Lucas rose, ready to make his way over to Nico, which prompted Nico to head to the bar, hoping to shake him off.
âHey, you okay?â The voice came from his left. He turned and immediately stopped breathing, this time for an entirely different reason. This concerned man was the most beautiful sight Nico had ever seen. Short, with fluffy curls, bright eyes behind thick glasses, and the most adorable face he had ever seen.
âPretend to be my boyfriend.â It came out before he could even truly think about it.
The man sputtered, âWhat?â
âJust⊠My nameâs Nico. That guy making his way over here is my awful ex-boyfriend, and the only way to deter him is to look like Iâm on a date. Please.â It was a solid plan. Maybe it wouldnât work, but it was better than nothing.
âOh. Okay. Iâm Levi. By the way.â They shared bright smiles, before being interrupted by the voice Nico was dreading.
âWell, if it isnât my handsome Nico.â Lucas slid into the spot next to Nico, looking him up and down with no hint of subtlety.
âIâm not yours, Lucas,â Nico practically spat. Levi, playing his character, laid a hand on Nicoâs shoulder. It immediately spread warmth through him, calming him from the inside out. He placed a hand on top of Leviâs, anchoring him there. He took a deep breath, âIâm his.â
Levi gave an awkward wave from behind Nico, causing a grimace to bloom on Lucasâs face. âHim? Really? Wow, your standards dropped, didnât they, pretty boy?â
Nico felt a surge of protectiveness as he gestured towards Levi, âAre you blind? Look at him!â
Lucas scoffed, âYeah, and look at you. Nico, dear, youâre a straight up 10. You can do better than this⊠7.â
âOh, like you?â Nico and Lucas both whipped their heads towards Levi. âLet me guess. Youâre some investment banker or consultant. Something that pays you a lot to be charming and kind of skeezy. Youâve been told youâre gorgeous your whole life, and your relationship with Nico was the first instance of someone not putting up with your bullshit because of your pretty face. Nail on the head?â Nico had never wanted to kiss someone so much in his whole life.
The smugness in Lucasâs smile faded, but he held his ground. âOh, whereâd you find this one, Nico? ComicCon? A D&D convention?â
âCool insult. Yeah, Iâm an obvious nerd, havenât heard that one before,â Levi mumbled this response, eliciting a small laugh from Nico.
âI just moved here to start my fellowship at Grey + Sloan -â
âAnd Iâm an intern there. We met at a mixer in preparation for his first day.â Nico could not believe his luck.
âOh, so this is new. Untested. Hm. Remember when we were in that stage, Nico? We couldnât keep our hands off each other. Seems that spark isnât as bright here.â The smugness was inching back in slowly.
âActually, it turns out the spark can be white hot, and we can also have some level of discretion. Crazy, I know.â Nico almost felt like pointing out that the level of attraction he currently felt for Levi, after ten minutes, was so much higher than what he ever felt for Lucas. But that would mean blowing their cover.
âDiscretion my ass,â Lucas scoffed.
âFine!â Levi spun Nico around and bore his (bright, gorgeous) eyes into Nicoâs, silently asking if this would be okay. Nico gave an almost imperceptible nod. Levi placed a hand on the back of his neck and slowly leaned up to join their lips.
It wasnât some intense, heated kiss with lots of tongue and teeth. They were both very aware that they were in public and, despite the lie they were crafting, had met not ten minutes ago. It was short, but deep. Nico felt like his whole body was on fire, but a fire he never wanted to go out. He delicately cupped Leviâs cheek, pushing into the kiss slightly, like a promise of something more. Pulling back, Levi stared up at Nico with wide eyes, kiss-swollen lips, and a light blush.
Nico smiled, before turning back around to Lucas. He had clearly been expecting some steamy makeout, but the beauty of that kiss did not go unnoticed by him. Lucas inhaled deeply through his nose. âOkay. I see my attempts are futile at this point.â
Both stared at his retreating back in awe, having definitely expected to something more. âHe⊠he left.â
Shifting his gaze to Levi, he saw triumphant surprise on his face. Nico laughed lightly. âYeah, he did.â
âUm, so⊠I guess youâll be going now.â Levi looked absolutely crushed at the prospect.
Nico raised his eyebrows. âAfter that kiss? Youâre never getting rid of me now.â
Levi let out a gleeful, disbelieving laugh. Nico marveled at him, struck once again by how truly gorgeous this man was.
They spent the night talking, Levi giving Nico all the gossip on the hospital and tips on where to go in Seattle. Nico shared stories and advice from his internship and residency, Levi listening with rapt attention. As they were swapping childhood stories, the last call bell rang, snapping  them both out of their little bubble. After finishing their drinks, they exchanged numbers, and Nico helped Levi into his cab, giving him a small kiss as they parted ways; a promise that this, whatever it would be, was just beginning.

Also, just a bit of an update: Iâm in the process of moving right now. So I may be posting and writing less this coming week. Just in case anyone cares.
I am so sorry itâs taken me a few days to get around to this! I genuinely wasnât expecting more than one, so this really did make me so happy!! Thank you so much, and I hope this is okay!! â€Â 14: things you said after you kissed meÂ
âNot enjoying prom, Manes?â
Alex had heard the footsteps following behind him when he walked out of the school. A part of him had thought that maybe it was just someone else who needed some air, or maybe Liz had spotted him leaving.
The second he caught a glimpse of a black suit and tie out of the corner of his eyes, he knew exactly who it was.Â
He turns his head slowly to look at Kyle. Instinct forces his body to tense at least a little at the sight of him. It wasnât one he had before these last two years, but itâs starting to fade again. Strangely, for the past few months, heâs been⊠okay. Alex would almost dare say back to his usual self.Â
Relaxing, he eyes him but huffs out something halfway between a scoff and a sigh.Â
âUh, no, not really,â he says, and Kyle raises his eyebrows. âJust⊠needed some air.â
He drags his eyes away from Kyle, casting them back to the sky, where they had been focused before Kyle spoke up. Itâs already dark, the stars dotting the sky like a map.Â
âYeah, me too,â Kyle says.Â
Alex glances back to him as he pushes himself up beside him on the railing. He just raises an eyebrow at him when Kyle looks at him. Kyle wanting to get away from his friends on Prom night doesnât quite add up in his mind, and it must show on his face since he doesnât bother to hide it.
Still, the corners of his mouth twitch up, and Kyle smiles back. Itâs brief as Alex pulls his gaze away once more, dropping to the ground just a few inches beneath his feet.Â
âWhat happened to your date?â he asks, the teasing edge that slips through instinctual as well. Just from a different point in their lives, one that he canât seem to shake off as easily as he thought. âDid Liz ditch?â
âNo, sheâs still inside,â Kyle says. âI think sheâs dancing with Max. He was doing his whole weird staring across the room thing again. Itâs like the guy doesnât realize that everyone knows he has a thing for her.â
Alexâs eyebrows furrow and he looks back up at him. âThat doesnât bother you?â
Kyle shakes his head, inhaling deeply as his eyes dart across the entrance. âNah. Well, the creepy staring part definitely bothers me. But she doesnât seem to mind, so thereâs not much I can do about that. Probably because she likes him as well.â
âOkay, now that does sound like something that should bother you,â Alex says in confusion, âyou know, as her boyfriend?â
Kyle breathes out a light laugh and shakes his head again.Â
âWeâre not together anymore,â he explains. âNot really, anyway. We sort of broke up a couple of weeks ago, but Prom was just around the corner, and weâre still friends, so⊠we just decided we might as well still go together.â
âOh,â Alex says, and heâs not sure if the revelation is the cause of the tug in his chest, or the flip in his stomach. It could be for a number of reasons, he tells himself, because logically, heâs right.Â
Kyle nods slowly, then his attention seems to snap back. His eyebrows draw together as he turns his head back to Alex, looking at him with a slight tilt to his head thatâs so familiar that it takes Alex a second to register that heâs asking him a question.
âWhat about you?â he nudges his arm gently with his elbow. âWhereâs your date? I canât imagine theyâre too happy about being ditched in the middle of Prom.â
Alex chuckles at that, glancing down. âYou would probably be right. If I actually had a date.â
The surprise on Kyleâs face definitely catches him off-guard. He quickly brushes it off.
âLiz went with you, and unfortunately, Mariaâs not much of an option considering she already had her prom,â he points out. Raising a shoulder in a shrug, he adds, âand itâs pretty hard to find another out gay or bi guy in this town, shockingly.â
Sarcasm drips from the last word, and Kyle doesnât seem to know whether to smile or frown. It seems to be how most of their conversations have gone recently.Â
âIt doesnât exactly leave much room for option unless I wanted to ask Max out, and honestly, I didnât. The whole angsty nerd thing isnât really my type.â
Kyleâs smile definitely slips. He glances away, pressing his lips together, and Alexâs stomach twists. Of course.Â
Shaking his head to himself, he forces his eyes back up to the sky. Itâs easier to focus on, and heâs pretty sure he doesnât want to watch Kyle leave without another word. Not again.
âWhat about someone whoâs only out to you?âÂ
Alexâs eyes snap back to him, his head turning maybe a little too quickly. Heâs met with nervousness and worry, two things he hasnât seen on Kyle since they were eleven.Â
"Well, and Liz,â Kyle quickly adds as an afterthought, his head dipping to the side, âbut sheâs sworn to secrecy. I know itâs not the same, but Iâm sort of out as bi. Oh wow, that felt weird to say.â
Alex can only look back at him in confusion, his mind trying to process through everything heâs blurting out into the open air. Kyle just holds his gaze, anxiously waiting, and it clicks.Â
His lips part in surprise. He lifts his eyebrows, and breathes out a quiet, âoh.â He has too many thoughts to voice out loud, but that doesnât stop them from bouncing around inside his head. This makes things clearer, and yet infinitely moreâ
His thought process is abruptly cut off by Kyle surging forward and pressing his lips to his.
His eyes widen. For a second, he forgets how to do anything. Itâs like Kyleâs just gone and done the equivalent of pouring a glass of water all over a circuit. Heâs expecting his brain to start sizzling.Â
Then he registers that Kyle is kissing him. Itâs a second too late as heâs already pulling back.Â
Alex blinks at him once, then twice, and he might lose count as he tries to remember how long he can hold his breath for, because he doesnât dare try.
âSorry,â Kyle says, sheepish but sincere, "Iâve been wanting to do that for a while, and⊠I shouldnât have. Iâve just been thinking a lot, and I remembered when we were eleven, and⊠what better time than prom to confess your feelings for someone, right?â
Alex doesnât respond. Itâs all taking a moment to sink in, especially even the mere thought that Kyle likes him.
Kyle seems to take his silence as a bad sign, his face dropping. Thereâs no disappointment or shock, or anything. Itâs more like a dejected acceptance put up behind a thin mask of understanding as if he dove right in while expecting the worst outcome possible.
"I donât expect you to forgive me,â he says quietly. âAnd I shouldnât have kissed you like that, Iâm sorry. Really. I just⊠needed you to know.â
Something about the way he says it drives a stab of familiarity through Alexâs chest, and he welcomes it. Itâs different, and new, and totally unfamiliar territory in a way. But itâs also the Kyle he remembers.Â
âIâm just gonnaââ
Alex leans in before he can finish his excuse to leave, pulling Kyle back in. The noise of surprise Kyle makes at Alexâs lips against his quickly dissolves into thin air as Alex kisses him. A beat, and then Kyle is kissing him right back.
His own movements are tentative and uncertain, because this is Kyle. Heâs kissed him once before and it resulted in the destruction of their friendship.
But heâs not pulling away this time â heâs leaning into him, kissing him back harder and yet softer, still careful.
It makes Alexâs head spin, but itâs also the best feeling heâs had in a while.Â
Heâs the one to pull back, only a few inches to get a break of air into his burning lungs. Kyle looks at him, and his mouth is already curving up, a gleam in his eyes that Alex has missed.Â
âEnjoying prom yet, Manes?â
Alex huffs out a laugh, and closes his eyes briefly, shaking his head. When he looks back at Kyle, he canât help but smile.Â
âIt seems to be turning around.â
âOh,â Kyle breathes out, lifting his eyebrows at him in that gleeful, totally innocent way. âWell, if itâll help continue turning it around, Iâm pretty sure Iâve been ditched for Evans. Not to be presumptuous, but would you consider being my date for the last two hours of Prom?â
Alex canât help but laugh slightly, quickly biting it back. âSorry, I just did not think I would see that day that Kyle Valenti was asking me to be his date. To anything.â
âItâs prom, the night of dreams coming true,â Kyle says with a grin. âSo, is that a yes or a no? Totally cool either way. Kissing you was pretty much the highlight of my night anyway, so.â
The words find a place to nestle themselves in his chest. Alex leans back in and kisses him.
Send me a word plus a ship and I will write a drabble
Michael made a frustrated noise as he tried to attach the boutonniere to his lapel. âHere, I got it,â Alex said as he reached around Michael. âI havenât worn a suit since prom, let alone one of these,â Michael huffed and gestured. âMaybe you should get used to them,â Alex offered and Michael froze. âWhat?â he whispered. âWith Liz and Max getting married, everyone will follow.â Michael couldnât help the smile on his face. âThat includes us?â he asked. âMaybe,â Alex replied. âIs there a ring already?â Michael anxiously whispered. Alex shrugged. âJust let me know when you want one.â
Okay, I donât think theyâll have kids but fo sho theyâll somehow be roped into babysitting for someone (maybe Casey who ends up adopting a whole bus of kids with Maggie) but Iâm pretty sure Nico will attempt to sing and Levi will be quick to join in equally as badly. And Maggie and Casey will come home to find their kids crying and Nico and Levi singing to the tune of a chalkboard being violently assaulted by nails.Â
And thatâs the last time Maggie lets the boys sing, ever.Â

How about a morning after au? Maybe theyâve been together for 6 or so months, and after waiting theyâve finally taken that last step. Bonus points if thereâs the first âI love you!â involved! <3
Itâs not the sunlight or his alarm that wakeshim; unfortunately itâs the sound of a garbage truck backing up and banging.Blaine jolts up from sleeping on his stomach with a sigh, alarm coursingthrough his veins as his heart pounds in his ears from being startled. Heshould really start looking into a new place where his apartment isnât so closeto the damn street.
What if itâs not their wedding, but engagement party? What do we think? Thoughts?
Nah, Todd and Darren are too much of Malec stans to be like that. lol Also, there is the wedded rune on the walls and there is all this gold, this is the Malec wedding.Â
Malec prompt: Magnus had been having a long stressful day of clients, when Alec comes home with the news that the clave has finally allowed them to get married. Fluff happens.
Read on AO3
A lonely evening
When Magnus came home that night he hoped he could relax with Alec, having dinner with him and just enjoy being with him. It was their anniversary after all. Alec had said he would be home when he came back. But he found the loft empty. A light smell of some dish was still in the air. Did he forget? Did he eat already? Without him?
He went to the kitchen to find dirty pans and pots, stacked in the sink. Magnus frowned. Awesome. So he really had had dinner without him and he didnât even clean up. But the warlock himself also didnât bother with it. He decided he wouldnât care. It was time for a drink. When he went to the living room he took a glass and filled it with some bourbon. Disappointment was slowly growing in his chest. He didnât want to feel like that but he just couldnât help it.
Just as he took a sip of the drink a paper on the table caught his attention. That hadnât been there when he had left. With three big steps he reached the table and took the paper.
>Iâll be back soon -A<
A soft smile appeared on Magnusâ lips, but it vanished just a moment after. Soon? When was soon? It could be any second. Or in one hour. Or even two. Sinking down on the sofa he was still holding the glass in one hand and the small note in his other. He could try calling him. Or at least message him. But he didnât want to look too clingy. Of course he knew that there was never really time for a shadowhunter to rest. Still he could have given him a few more details. He could have helped⊠maybe. What if he didnât want him around? Or maybe he had thought it was too dangerous for Magnus. He small chuckle left his mouth. What a stupid thought. Also Alec shouldnât be the one to decide what was too dangerous for him. He was the High Warlock of Brooklyn. He had lived for centuries. And now a shadowhunter wanted to tell him about dangers? He rolled his eyes and took another sip.
30 minutes laterâŠ
Maybe he should just go to sleep already. He put down his empty glass that he had already refilled two times and got up, walking to the bedroom. Just when he had sat down on the bed he heard the door. Since he had turned off the lights, the loft was dark.
âMagnus?â Alec sounded rather confused. But what did he expect? That he would wait for the dinner that would never happen because apparently Alec had forgotten about it?
âIâm hereâ Magnus walked out of the bedroom and with a snap of his fingers all lights were turned on again. The wide smile on Alecâs face disappeared when he saw the frown in Magnusâ. He took a small step forward to shorten the distance to the warlock.
âWhatâs wrong? Something happened? Why have you been in the bedroom?â There were some signs of worries in his voice. He came even closer. âAre you exhausted? It must have been a hard dayâŠâ
Magnusâ tense body softened. Alec was so considerate and caring. Still he wasnât sure what to think of the situation.
âDid you forget?â he asked.
âWha- of course not! Magnus. Talk to me?â
âI just⊠you could have told me.â
âTold you what?â
âYou wanted to eat earlier or without me or whatever. I donât know. But itâs fine. Youâre back now. Thatâs all that mattersâ
Alec stared at him for a moment. He had no idea what was going on.
âBut I didnât have dinner without you. Itâs still in the oven. I thought that itâd be best to just leave it there. So we can have it when Iâm back.â The shadowhunter explained with a soft voice. âLook, Magnus, Iâm sorry. I promised to be there. However⊠something came up and⊠I needed to head to the instituteâ
âOf courseâ Magnus got softer. He understood. The clave was important. His family was important. He just sometimes wished he wouldnât leave the moment someone would order him to the institute.
Ten minutes later dinner was heated up again and Alec put down the baking dish on the table. The chicken smelled amazing, Magnus realized and all the tension finally fell down when Alec kissed him for the first time this evening.
âI have newsâ Alec said while filling Magnusâ plate. The warlock looked at him in anticipation but didnât get an answer just now.
The small smirk on Alecâs lips and the light blush on his cheeks somehow managed to raise a certain anger in Magnus again. He wasnât in the mood to play around. Still his voice was calm when he demanded: âTell me.â
Alec usually enjoyed the warlockâs impatience way too much and on any other day he would have held back longer but he felt the tension from before build up again.
âMy parents set the dateâ he finally said.
âThe date?â Magnus put down his fork, looking at the younger one in confusion.
âIf you canât remember, it canât be that important then, huh?â Alec asked rather than answering the question noticing the atmosphere becoming even worse. So he got up and grinned. Just to kneel down next to Magnusâ chair. Gently he took his boyfriendâs hand.
âWeâre going to get married. Two months from nowâ The blush on Alecâs cheeks got stronger and his hands were shaking. He didnât remember if he had ever seen the warlock speechless. But now was that time.
They had talked about marrying for a long time. But since Alecâs family â well, rather his parents â still werenât delighted by first, Alec being gay, and second, picking a warlock, they had ignored it and tried not to talk too much about it since it hurt both of them. With setting the date his parents had finally accepted it.
Instead of saying anything, Magnus got up and pulled Alec up as well. He kissed him deeply, all the worries and fears disappearing while he felt his beloved shadowhunterâs warm and soft lips on his own. For a moment he broke the kiss and looked into the blue eyes of the taller one. His hand was resting on Alecâs cheek, his thumb gently caressing it.
âI love you, Magnusâ Alec whispered, pulling Magnus close for another kiss. âI love you.â The words werenât much more than a whimper but the warlock heard them anyway.
âI love you, tooâ he answered, his heart beating fast.
Finally. After such a long time. Finally they were going to marry.
Later that night when they lay down in bed, Magnus snuggled close, his face hiding at Alecâs brawny chest. The shadowhunter was long asleep, snoring softly while Magnus went on whispering soft words to his skin. He held him tight, not willing to let go of his lover anytime, soon.
