Merry Christmas @youmustthinkmemad  This one is for you. :-)
Robert Rodgers could not remember the last happy Christmas he had enjoyed. Â It had certainly been when he was a boy and the world had not yet stung him. Â But even then, Christmas had been clouded with the fighting of his parents and crushing poverty. Â And yet here he was, a man middle-aged, sitting in a larder in Philadelphia quietly hoping for a happy Christmas. Â
Andre could barely be bothered with him. Â A haphazard invitation to Christmas at his home in Philadelphia. Â Rodgers had been there for three hours, been greeted briefly and left to his own devices. Â âHappy Christmas indeed,â he said softly, taking s swig of whiskey out of the flask on his hip. Â The door to the larder banged open with a clatter and a dark-skinned woman bustled in.
âOh!â she said with some surprise upon seeing him. Â She brushed an angry hand across her face and he could see the trace of tears. Â âI apologize, sir. Â I didnât know anyone would be in here.â Â She turned to leave. Â âItâs Abigail, yes?â he said softly, his voice rasping. Â She stopped. Â âYes, sir. Â Abigail.â Â âWould you like a drink, Abigail?â Â She hesitated. Â âItâs not poisoned if youâre worried. Â Well, not this one.â Â He joked lightly.
Another hesitation, her hand on the doorknob.  âPlease,â he said quietly, âitâs Christmas.â  She turned and fixed him with a searching look.  âYes, it is,â she replied.  She took a seat on apple box next to him and he passed her the flask.  She took a small swig.  âSo, why were you crying?â  âYouâre a rude one,â she said.  âWell, thereâs no sense avoiding it,â he said roughly.  She paused and stared ruefully at a bag of potatoes.  âMy son, Cicero.  Itâll be our first Christmas apart.â  âAh,â he said awkwardly.  They lapsed into silence, passing the flask back and forth.
âYouâre a good mum, Abigail,â he said softly. Â âYou know nothing about me, sir,â she scoffed. Â âNo, I donât. Â But I know people. Â And youâre a good woman.â Â She seemed surprised at his praise and simply stared at him. Â The corners of his ears turned red. Â âBut if you tell anyone I said that Iâll have you killed.â Â She smiled lightly. Â âHappy Christmas, sir.â Â The corners of his mouth turned up the slightest fraction. Â âHappy Christmas, Abigail.â
