The story of Robert Bruce and the spider is a Scottish legend that tells how Robert Bruce, after numerous defeats against the English, was inspired by the persistence of a spider that, despite failing six times, finally managed to spin its web on its seventh attempt. This act of perseverance encouraged Bruce to continue fighting for Scottish independence, culminating in the decisive victory at Bannockburn in 1314.

It was perhaps significant in this respect that Bruce was also Earl of Carrick in view of his father's marriage to the daughter and heir of the last Celtic Earl of Carrick, and thus also possessed Celtic blood and a Celtic title. (David Daiches, Scotland and the Union (John Murray, 1977), 10)
This is such a weird and extremely male-centred way of expressing 'Robert Bruce was Earl of Carrick through his mother Marjorie'. The title was hers and the blood was hers. If not for the specified blood, the phrasing would make it sound like it came to him through his father's marriage to his stepmother somehow. As the story goes, Marjorie of Carrick held Bruce's father captive until he agreed to marry her, but she was sadly unable to hold Daiches captive until he did her justice.
