The story of Robert Bruce and the spider is a Scottish legend that tells how Robert Bruce, after numerous defeats against the English, was inspired by the persistence of a spider that, despite failing six times, finally managed to spin its web on its seventh attempt. This act of perseverance encouraged Bruce to continue fighting for Scottish independence, culminating in the decisive victory at Bannockburn in 1314.

On 24 June 1314 an outnumbered Scottish army under Robert the Bruce crushed the forces of Edward II at the Battle of Bannockburn.

Alan Clephane of Carslogie fought with Bruce on the field of Bannockburn, where he is said to have lost his right hand, and had one of steel made in its stead and so fitted with springs as to enable him to wield his sword. He is mentioned in the chartularies of Dunfermline and Balmerino in 1331, and by Sir Robert Sibbald in 1332.
