Carla Connor & Rob Donovan Coronation Street | 14 May 2014
it’s the fact that rob is carla’s last tie to her old life. the last surviving donovan (or as good as). he’s her last barely-intact thread to the life she escaped from (left him behind in). he’s the only other living person who knows what went on under the roof of their childhood home. and they may have come out with different scars, but their stink is the same (and it lingers beneath every bottle of expensive perfume or cologne). their survival instincts grew up side by side. their tenacity and stubbornness shared bathwater and a bed (until the council deemed them too old and finally put their mam in for a three bedroomed place on an estate). it’s the fact that carla has done everything within her power to distance herself from the scrawny little council estate kid that she was, the girl whose dad walked out on her (the girl who didn’t know who her dad was until she was grown), the girl who went to school in last week’s dirty uniform, the girl who left her house not knowing if she was coming back home that night to her mother or which version of her mother she was going to get. the girl who raised herself and her baby brother, until she was old enough, wily enough, loved enough to leave. probably with not a single possession but the clothes on her back (maybe with an alarm clock that she’ll keep hold of long after it stops working). she couldn’t even keep her name. it’s the fact that in the long history of children and teens that carla has played mother-figure to, she played it for rob, first, when she was barely old enough to take care of herself. and i have absolutely no point with this, i don’t have a singular, neat, conclusive statement to wrap this up in. i’m just bitter. i’m just sad. and i don’t know how this storyline is going to wrap up, and i’ll remain tentatively and stupidly hopeful because that’s who i am, but with the way things are going, i have little hope that we’ll ever see the donovan siblings wrinkled and greying and laughing at the same table as they talk about ‘that one cruddy caravan holiday’ with the bugs and the rain and the sticks of rock rotting their teeth, and how it was the highlight of their young lives because they were out of that house, together.
I call this “a hostage situation waiting to happen.”

*laughing nervously* girl what the fuck just happened
I rewatched the scene from January 2025 with Matty holding Bobby hostage as per Rob's plan and I like to imagine that Rob bringing up 1) him being a neglectful dad to Bobby and 2) God + Mason is what struck nerves in Matty because he seemed proper upset beyond playing the part of a volatile inmate in the hostage situation
so here are my thoughts + long semi-coherent rant in general!
feel like we’ve forgotten rob and mandy’s baby is due soon…. much to think about
