After all performances are done, trainees are told to wait quietly while CEOs and coaches of all companies gather in a corner of the auditorium with their notes to evaluate the performances and pick the winners of the day. It takes them around fifteen minutes to discuss everything and after some debate they all seem to agree on the names.
Trainees are now instructed to go on stage for the results and from up there is clear that not all CEOs are happy with the outcome. Hyun Bin is the one with the microphone. “We expected more of today’s performances but it seems like most of you tried to play safe.” The first words are not the most encouraging, but he continues. “I won’t go into details right now. The coaches will do their best to share our thoughts later when you’re back to practice. Some of you really need it.”
The microphone is handed to Sphere’s CEO whose expression is a little brighter. “I’ll announce the winners.” She says, looking down at the notes. “Let’s start with the girls! The winners are KT and Royal. Congratulations, we enjoyed your performances!” A round of applause before the woman reveals the other winners of the night. “As for the boys, TRC team 1 and Nova won the battles for your CEOs’ contentment and our last winner is... KT again. Congratulations!” More applauses follow the announcement.
But it’s not the end. Holding the microphone, Katie Lee is the one to bring the best and hopefully most expected results. “As we promised, two groups will win 2 days off to enjoy a trip to Busan with all costs covered by us.” She starts with a smile. “A bus will be waiting for you in front of Seocho on the 12th after you’re done with training and you return on the 14th at night.” After all the details are shared with them, it’s finally time to announce who will be traveling to Busan in a few days. “The winners are… Royal Girls and TRC Boys team 1. Congratulations!” With this, everyone is excused to return to practice and the CEOs get up to return to their companies.

he’s actually been looking forward to this all month.
after the abysmal showing he'd made in the previous month's evaluations, he's glad that he's getting a chance to redeem himself with this one. sure, it may not be a dance redemption, but it's still an opportunity to show that he has some semblance of talent, in a category that he has actual confidence in. not only that, but he gets to perform along with a whole group of his fellow trc trainees, something he realizes he doesn't do quite often. the fact that dancing is not only not required, but also even discouraged, is just an added bonus.
guitar in hand, he takes his place on stage among the row of stools and microphones, a simple setup because it is, essentially, a simple performance. the coaches had made it clear that they wanted their vocals to be the focal point of the stage, and so they were providing no distractions from their voices than needed be, making it a total acoustic performance with him playing on his guitar as the backing track.
once they're given the go ahead, he starts the count off and the performance starts smoothly with seongmin's rap. it's a melancholic yet smooth start to their song that carries out well throughout the rest of their performance, building up more and more as lines are rapped and sung, his own included, spat with precision and perfect timing, a pure display of the skills he's cultivated throughout the years and the confidence that comes with it.
and it keeps building, all the way up to what he considers the climax of the song: the bridge. it's this part of the song that he'd had the most apprehensions about, simply because, in the whole spane of his entire life, he has never done an acoustic harmonization in front of any type of audience, let alone in front of the coaches who have trained him for almost three whole years now. not only that, the harmonies sounding good is dependent on each individual singing their parts well and in tune, and chanyeol isn't a singer by any means.
luckily, though, he has group mates who were more than kind enough to stay behind after practice hours to help him out when he needed it, and though he lacks confidence as a singer in general, in this particular instance, he can at least say that he's done his part adequately well, to the point only the most trained of ears could tell he was lacking just an iota of confidence.
the song is over more quickly than he realizes, and it marks yet another month gone by on this long journey of his toward his dreams. how many more months, years, does he have to go until his dream is realized? he can never be certain, but he knows he's never going to give up until he achieves it.
✞ MAY EVALUATION
* VOCAL PERFORMANCE ; EGOTISTIC x
with SPHERE BOYS ( @rkvok @rksungmin @chrxsrk )
june 1st, 2020
may is a difficult month. he starts it in the gutter, heavy with his hardest goodbye yet and failure in the prior month’s evaluation. he can’t help but feel sorry for himself and marinate in pity at first, paralyzed by grief and self-doubt once again, as he always seems to circle back to. was he really good enough to be a trainee? was he good enough for someone to stay? was he good enough for anything? (he kept circling back to the same answer: no.)
if he learned anything from the mgas, it was to not let his own feelings get in the way of the success of the group. one of the sharpest memories in his mind is yeji and jinyoung’s frustration with him, their scolding and scalding comments as they tried to force him off the floor into something more useful to their team. the last thing he wanted was to go back to that time, and to burden the few boys that were in sphere with the same daniel when they needed him.
so he chokes it back; he smiles, and puts on a chipper air, and if they can tell a difference, they don’t question him. besides, there is something a little genuinely uplifting about making a new arrangement for a song by one of their sunbaes, highlighting different instruments, recording a new backtrack. there’s something sincerely exciting about performing in an auditorium in the seocho complex instead of just a practice room, in front of a crowd and the ceos.
he tells moonbok it’s funny that they’re competing against trc’s boys when trc’s concept was the other daniel had to exemplify in the mgas, and it is. funnier still is the fact that this setting isn’t so unlike the mgas without the cameras: competing audience, ceos watching from afar, ready to make their judgments. something in daniel clicks despite all of his insecurity-- some sudden determination. maybe it’s the experience falling into place, like second nature now, his mindset already shifting into what it needs to for success in a competitive setting. maybe it’s just that familiar desperation to prove he’s gotten better. maybe he wants to perform in front of the ceo judges and make them regret rejecting him for two seasons in a row.
eventually, as the month and practices stretch on, and he gets to focus on the aspects of music he likes the best, his smiles aren’t so rehearsed. he convinces himself of them, and he feels lighter. maybe part of it is woong’s reminder that god never gives you more than you can handle, and his own realization that comes hand in hand: there are still so many blessings left.
one of them: a group of creative, talented boys he really likes singing with. it’s hard to spend time with them without thinking of the ones that left, all people he considered friends, maybe moreso than those remaining, but there’s still them. they’re still here together, and preparations for the evaluation are fun, and for as scared as he is to get used to this, he knows he could.
surprisingly, when it’s their turn to set foot on stage, he doesn’t really feel nervous. if he thinks about it, however, the nerves are right below the surface, with his ever-lacking confidence, so he doesn’t think about it. instead, he thinks about empty enigma shows, and cameo, and how much he could use him now to put on the best performance he can.
they don’t dance, even when the music begins. instead, they hold their poses, the acoustic guitar and bass of the self-recorded backtrack ringing out in the auditorium. daniel makes sure his stare is intense, hopefully captivating, hopefully lacking in nothing.
he starts them off.
i’m your satellite, revolving around you
but that doesn’t mean you’re the sun
moonbok follows him up: a fact that shook him for much of this month. moonbok singing. moonbok, inarguably a stronger rapper than him, likely a stronger dancer than him, singing, and working daniel out of bohyung’s lines. daniel was left with narae’s, whom he personally knew as a weaker vocalist, but-- upon listening to the song they were covering multiple times, he learned to let it go a little. everyone in spica was just about equally talented, just like the boys in this group. (it’s what he tried to convince himself of, anyway-- always a battle of daniel and his anxieties.)
things are flowing your way
don’t hurt me
sungmin leads the way with his reliable rapping next, and in this moment, daniel is lucky enough to only focus on the performance, and the enjoyment of it (not the insecurity, not the rampant knowledge that sphere doesn’t need him, because in all of his talents, there is someone better than him.)
the backtrack builds up, instrument upon instruments, up to the chorus, and then it drops out, only leaving bare bones instrumentation and daniel to sing.
i’m always all about you you you you
you’re always about me me me me
it’s not a song he particularly relates to, nor does he want to. he doesn’t want to be angry and bitter, but deep down, a part of him is-- angry to be left behind so often, angry to be criticized and put down and taken advantage of so often. maybe he can channel a little bit of that into the song, or maybe he just wants to have fun performing in front of like-minded people again. it’s a competition, sure, but he’s mainly excited to see the talent all of the companies have up their sleeve (and probably inevitably compare himself to them regardless.)
he gets to finish off the chorus too.
do whatever you want, ay
he doesn’t sing again until the next prechorus, but in the meantime, he works his way around the stage, making eye contact with the other trainees, trying to make the performance fun and engaging in the lack of their dancing.
even if i get mad, that only hurts my lips
in comes another chorus that daniel lends his voice to, and then the slightest bridge. he gets the line that transitions them into the next prechorus, and also the only full english line, always beloved in daniel’s heart.
i’m ready to go on my way
their last chorus is more explosive, with a thicker instrumental, fuller and closer to the original while still staying true to the new sphere boys arrangement. they reach the end, and he sings his final line in a round of echoes and harmonies:
May Evaluation - Royal Entertainment
Inter-company Competition; Royal Boys vs KT Boys
Song: Hey! by GOT7 Seven O’Clock
Line Distribution: x
Performing with: @rkxbin
Outfit: x

It’s been exactly 12 months since he’s joined Royal and had his first evaluation. Dowoon can’t help but look back on that day with both fondness and embarrassment. Fondness because it was a mark of achievement for even getting into Royal to start with. Embarrassment because of the circumstances in the weeks before the evaluation and because of the actual performance itself.
It’s been a strange twelve months. And even after all he’s achieved, Dowoon feels as though he’s going nowhere fast, as though he’s not properly utilizing his time in Royal. While this time last year, he was optimistic about his future in the company, now he’s filled with fear and uncertainty.
That is, until Changbin lays a hand on his shoulder, squeezes and smiles at him. Despite himself, Dowoon returns the smile and nods. There’s no point dwelling on the past, not when they’re about to perform in front of both their peers and all of the CEOs.
Dowoon has to admit, he’s glad they were pitted against the KT boys, who seem to have a similar dearth of numbers, though at the same time, he’s not underestimating the others. He’s worked with Haruto, he knows how easily the younger boy can adapt to the situation. (Last month’s evaluation being a perfect example after all) The others he doesn’t know as well, but Dowoon knows that they’re good. They have to be, if they were scouted by KT, after all. His stomach begins to tighten with nervousness.
Performing in the TRC Triple Threat Challenge was somehow easier than this.
Before he knows it, he and Changbin are being called to perform and Dowoon picks up his cajón with shaking hands, making his way to the CEOs. Setting the instrument on the ground, he bows to the CEOs with his teammate before they assume their positions, grateful that they were allowed to bring the props they asked for.
And that they didn’t have to dance either. He’s eternally grateful for that too.
He watches out of the corner of his eye as Changbin begins the performance, trying on a leather jacket in front of a mirror, while Dowoon pretends to be more engrossed with his cajón. As they’d practiced, he hears Changbin’s groan of frustration and not a second later, his vision is obscured as the jacket suddenly lands on his head. Beneath the covering, Dowoon can’t help but grin at the shocked and confused noises of their audience, who no doubt thought that the incident was an accident. But he quickly schools his face into an annoyed expression as he yanks the jacket off his head and turns to ‘glare’ at this teammate.
“HEY!”
He marches up to Changbin and shoves the jacket firmly into his chest, trying so, so hard not to break character and start laughing and the noises of panic and worry amongst the others. (In particular, he can hear Daehwi’s worried call of ‘hyung?!’ and he figures he might be putting on a bit too good of a show) Luckily instead of ‘attacking’ Changbin anymore, Dowoon starts the song, and their performance proper.
I don’t get it, why did it have to be him?
The person you chose huh
People say girls are attracted to bad boys
I didn’t believe it but they were talking about you?
As he backs off, ‘leading’ Changbin towards their instruments, he puts as much effort into sounding as irritated and incredulous that their hypothetical female friend would choose someone like Changbin, all the time while keeping to the song’s original melody. When Changbin raps back at him, he pointedly rolls his eyes to the ceiling at his words, but it doesn’t stop him from flashing his friend a grin as he’s ‘backed down’ on his cajón.
HEY you, be careful, you be careful
Cherish her by your side
HEY you, be anxious, be anxious
I might steal her from you
HEY she is too good for you
HEY this is a warning
HEY if you make her cry again, I won’t let it go bad boy
HEY she is too good for you
HEY this is a warning
HEY if you make a mistake again HEY be a MAN
As they reach the chorus, their backing track is replaced by them on their instruments, and Dowoon can easily hear his brother’s admiration, along with other noises from their audience. But he tunes them all out, almost even forgetting that all fives CEOs are watching them too. All he cares about his performance as he and Changbin continue to throw shade at each other.
HEY you, be careful, you be careful
Cherish her by your side
HEY you, be anxious, be anxious
I might steal her from you
At the bridge, they leave their instruments once more to circle each other and their audience, still ‘criticizing’ each other’s faults though the song. At once stage when Dowoon glances away from his partner, he can see that long-haired rapper from the MGAs desperately trying to hold in his laughter (Dowoon hopes the fact that he’s laughing is a good sign) along with Daewhi cringing at his attempts to be macho. He doesn’t look at the CEOs, knowing it will throw him off.
Instead he advances back to the center of the stage as he and Changbin sing the final chorus in alteration, making their final threats to each other. As they yell out the last line, Dowoon reaches towards the other and grabs his collar, feeling Changbin do the same to him.
HEY! BE A MAN!
The hold the position for a moment before releasing each other and turning to their audience with a grin. Now that the performance is over, Dowoon is aware of how hard his heart is beating and how much is legs are shaking. Still, he’s proud of what they’ve done and they bow in unison before collecting their instruments and getting off the stage.
One year since his first ever trainee evaluation, and no matter how the results go, Dowoon knows that this eval has been his favourite.
may 2020 eval
song: Missing You - Winner B1A4 || Lyrics
trc boys 1 (battle versus sphere)
w. jordan, seunghun, chanyeol, seongmin
they had a few aces up their sleeves. namely chanyeol and him. a powerful rapper and a powerhouse vocalist. both trainees of four plus years. in all honesty, between them, they had about a combined six years of training. jongsuk liked to consider himself a powerhouse main vocal type so the song was very much up his alley. the other aces up their sleeves was their decided mix of the guitar and ukulele which jongsuk thought was definitely was a different twist that would send everyone reeling. sure sphere may have a twist, but he was sure that their twist was better and even their aces were up to par.
they had to win. he wanted the bragging rights and the vacation. he had renewed his contract earlier that day so he was eager to see where his desires and passions were going. their song had been an acoustic rendition by their sunbaes. after all, trc pride. he had spent years working on his vocals, making sure that he was good enough to be the best vocalist in all the companies.
their battle had been the second one of the day and it was rather exciting to have the chance to show off earlier what trc was truly made of and that both trc teams were a force to be reckoned with.
their song was a soft mellow choice, good for highlighting their high notes and vocals and highlighting their rappers too. he thought that was the goal of the eval and and the performances. that was one of their hidden aces too. seeing the team that they were up against, jongsuk grinned. he wanted to win so that he could brag to his best friend and he was convinced that they could win.
they were singing quite softly, falling along with the melody. he actually loved singing and this evaluation performance with the melodic touch of their song was something right up his alley. his voice was soft and the high notes that he had spent ages working on were quite pointed with the lines that he had.
he had pride in his team and watching them sing and rap while he counted the beats to his next part. seunghun was incredible and could give jongsuk a run for his money, and jordan was good too, surprisingly. seongmin and chanyeol rapped like it was all they did. jongsuk was so proud of them.
when they finished their song, he had to commend them. they were incredible and they had put it out there. maybe they weren't the best but he was sure that they were good enough to triumph. "Good job guys."
"If we win this, well, maybe a treat for sweets would be fun?" he suggested, grinning.

May Evaluation - Sphere Entertainment
Inter-company Company; Sphere Boys vs TRC Boys (Team 1)
Song: Egotistic (Remix) [line distribution, video reference]
Performing with: @rksungmin, @danielxrk and @chrxsrk
Now that Daniel’s mentioned it, Moonbok can’t really get the thought of this evaluation being a ‘light’ version of the MGAs. 10 teams vying for the attention and praise of the CEOs of the Big Five. Thankfully, there seems to be no threat of elimination this time round, so the stomach churning nervousness isn’t there any mores. (He’s still nervous, of course. But nothing like back then.)
That doesn’t mean Moonbok intends to lose.
Of course, he never intended on losing during the MGAs either. But as their group is called forward, he firmly pushes any thoughts out of the competition of his head. Making their way to the stage, he smiles easily at the judges, laughing internally at the thought that they must be sick of him appearing in front of them like this. He even manages to not avoid Hyun Bin’s glance. (Mostly.)
Then the music starts and they fall into their roles. It had taken them less than a day to decide on CONVEX’s version of Egoistic, with Chris and Daniel adding their own twists to the song. While Moonbok felt a little guilty in not being able to contribute to the actual arrangement of their piece, Sungmin promised him he was doing the group a huge favour by taking a vocalist position instead of a rapping one.
(Personally, however, Moonbok still thinks that Sungmin is too harsh on himself.)
But you become the center anyway.
But you shouldn’t do whatever you want.
And Moonbok has to admit, he enjoys it much more than he’d thought. And even compared to when they’d all worked together at the start of the year, this performance felt even better than that one. As though they’d become more in tuned with each other and their strengths and weaknesses. (In fact, he almost regrets the fact that they don’t have to dance for this performance. Almost)
I wanna do whatever I want.
As he sings the song’s final line and their performance comes to an end, Moonbok is grinning and he pushes his hair back from his face. Hopefully, they’ve done enough to win, but even if they haven’t, it’ll just be a disappointment.
Because he’s not going anywhere. Not for a long time to come.
When she had first heard the theme of this month’s evaluation, Yoona was excited. It was something new and it sounded fun. However, the more she thought about it, the more she realised how burdensome and pressuring this could be. The trainees were expected to represent their respective companies and, essentially, win. She didn’t know how she was going to be able to do it, but Yoona would sure as hell try.
When she had found out she was working with Hyojeong once again for an evaluation, she was taken back to her first official evaluation. Hyojeong had been in her group then and the younger girl had been kind to her and their friendship had continued on even after. While they weren’t close, they were still friends, and Yoona was glad to see how much the other had improved (and how much she had as well).
Nakyung was someone that Yoona had yet to meet, at least officially, and so she was excited to be able to meet someone new. She was nervous coming into the first rehearsal knowing there was a new face as she wasn’t sure how Nakyung and her would get along, but she was optimistic. Besides, was there really anyone she didn’t get along with?
It didn’t take the group long to begin rehearsals once they had decided on the song and distributed the parts. Yoona was pleased with her parts and how fair the lines were. She would have happily given up some of her lines if it allowed one of the other girls to shine. After all, that’s what she wanted. She wanted the girls to shine, and she was going to do whatever she could to help them.
Their rehearsals were long and hard. They worked on perfecting the vocals while also making it their own. Yoona had spent her nights at home rehearsing the lyrics and trying different ways of singing lines to see which sounded and felt the best. She then would sing for the girls and ask for their input. This month’s evaluation was a big deal after all and she only wanted to perform the best she could.
May Evaluation - TRC Ent
Monster (Produce 101 version) - rap
Performance
Having tried her hand at singing for the past monthss (aside from her usual focus on dancing of course), it'd been a bit difficult to get back into rapping at first, but now it still felt a lot more natural to her, than the attempts at singing. Boy had she missed rapping. Darned be whoever chose that even subvocal lines had to be that high all the time.
Her progress during the month really hadn't been bad, but was noticeably worse than usual, which finally changed during the last two weeks of May. She couldn't leave the other two hanging and, of course, after the little... accident it was good to have something to distract herself with. Hopefully it wouldn't blow into some sort of scandal, but she figured fights between trainees would happen all the time, right? Well, hopefully.
The day of their performance finally arrived and she couldn't say whether the last days passed by quickly or not, but she really wanted to put the month behind her.
Heejin began the song and her rap part followed soon after. She felt surprisingly calm after the past month, but suited her expression to the lyrics of the song, adding some grieve to her voice. The rap had a comfortable speed and she didn't have to worry too much about afterwards, so she was rather confident in having done well. Hopefully it wasn't too obvious that she hadn't given her all for the first two and a half weeks of practising.
The song ended soon after her last line and she was content with their performance. The other two had surely carried the performance as the singers and maybe she could've done better had she put in more effort right from the start, but for once she could live with not having done the very best she possibly could have.
