Well, as much as it pains me to say so, Dowoonās time at RK has come to an end. After months of me trying to revive his muse, including changing his faceclaim and trying to shake up his interests and throw him into opportunities heād never have thought of two years ago, itās time to admit that this is simply where Dowoonās story ends.
Itās sad and part of me hates that Iām doing this, but itās for the best. This genuinely the best time for me to let him go. To everyone who ever interacted Dowoonie and help me build his character from a shy little sick boy who was pretty much out of hope and ready to die to the dorky drummer he leaves as today, thank you so so much <3 <3 <3
More rambly reasoning and post-drop info under the cut, but no obligation to read!
IC-wise, itās simply just a lack of interest in becoming an idol. If youāve read through some of Dowoonās solos, youāll notice how disillusioned heās become with the whole being an idol thing. Mostly because even though he always said it was his dream, heās come to realize that it wasnāt. It was a dream born of desperation; he was so sure that heād die before he he turned 25, so he contocted this plan to become an idol to leave his family good memories for when he passed. But then he had his transplant and it suddenly turned out that he wasnāt going to die, that he had all the time left in the world to do what he wanted. And gradually, he realized that being an idol was not that.
In all honestly, Dowoonās story ended the day he had his surgery. But I tried to keep going, tried to make him into an idol. I was so freaking happy when he became a Royal trainee, you have no idea. But we both gradually realized that this wasnāt meant to be. And thatās fine.
Dowoon will probably see out his contract as a Royal trainee npc, even with his disinterest in becoming a trainee, mostly because heās aware of how being a former Royal trainee will look if he ever has a change of heart and decides to pursue music again. Which he probably will, he misses his old band and being a drummer in general. Around March, heāll take up the place in university that he deferred and will part on good terms with the company and he decides to focus on his real goal, to become a journalist. Youāre all free to continue to mention him as an npc if you need to.
Again, thank you all so much for the last two and a half years with this dork! Iāll still be active on Moonbok, so you wonāt be getting rid of me just yet, ehehe. But for now, I think I can (for the most part), declare the Book of Dowoon to be complete.

Dowoon has to admit, despite the the vibes Serim gave off when heād first met the younger, he hadnāt been the headache Dowoon had initially feared he would be. Sure there was still some cheekiness and the kid sometimes did or said things that made Dowoon do a double-take, but his fears of Serim being a carbon-copy of his little brother were unfounded.
For now, at least.
Itās lunch time and Dowoon is filling up his plate at the cafeteria, getting a bit more than usual given that they have a three and half hour dance practice session once lunch ends. And unlike Serim, Dowoon doesnāt have boundless energy.
Spying the younger boy at one of the tables, Dowoon makes his way over to him, grinning as he reaches the tables and nods at the empty seat.
āIs it ok if I sit with you, Serim-ah? Iāll even turn offĀ āhyung-modeā for you.ā
Certain things had become a routine for Dowoon at this stage. Such as staying late at Royal during weekends to practice his drumming or singing in peace, without a coach to pass comment his in performance. (Not that he didnāt appreciate it, but sometimes Dowoon just wanted to drum to a beat that existed only in his head. Or sing anime OSTs without Daehwi giving him grief.) Grabbing whatever leftovers from the cafeteria and supplementing them with convenience store snacks for a makeshift dinner until he decided he was going home was another routine.
But the most constant, and by far his favourite, was finding Hongjoong in the almost empty corridors after most of the others had gone home for the day. In a sense, Dowoon couldnāt really call meeting up with the older boy a routine as such, because it was often by chance that their paths would cross. But he figured that the fact as random as their meetings were, the fact that they usually happened during relative silence of weekend evenings was enough to consider it a routine. In a way.
(It makes sense in Dowoonās mind, at least)
Itās one such evening when their paths cross again. Laden with a bag full of snacks and treats that would probably cause both his coaches and his doctor to complain, Dowoon is about to duck into an empty practice room when he spots a very familiar silhouette walking toward him. Grinning, Dowoon meets Hongjoong just as the other is about to walk past the door.
āHyung! Itās been a while~ā And it has, apart from quick waves shared in the corridors during the day, Dowoon has barely seen Hongjoong over the last few weeks. (They must be getting ready for a comeback or something.) His smile turns a little shy as he offers a cereal bar to the older boy.
āDo you... are you free, hyung? I mean, if you arenāt itās cool!ā
but, as the other always seems to do at just the right time, dowoon comes to rescue him not long after. biting his lip, heās unsure of where to begin, but the other starts for him, and he finds himself laughing at the joke.
āyou know,ā he starts a bit gruffly, before clearing his throat,Ā āi actually made that same joke with jibeomie not too long ago. itās good.ā
fiddling with his fingers a bit awkwardly, he adds,Ā āthank you, though. your performance was good, too. i guess weĀ both learned how to do bright concepts after hey, huh?ā
smiling a little bit at the recollection of their collaboration in a previous evaluation, changbin finds himself lifting his head just a little bit higher now that the other was with him.Ā
With Changbinās reponse to his ājoke,ā Dowoon isnāt sure if that means he has a good sense of humor or that Changbinās is bad, but he grins nevertheless in response and leans back on his arms.
āDammit, and here I was thinking I was being all original. Guess I really should reconsider the day job as a comedian, hm?ā he replies with a laugh, shaking his head.Ā āProbably for the best, the only one that laughs at what I do is Daehwi, and thatās usually because Iām suffering.ā
The tips of Dowoonās ears redden as Changbin returns his compliment and his smile turns for self-depreciating to slightly shy. And yet, beneath the shyness, thereās a hint of pride, too.
āThanks, Changbin-ah. And I guess..... I donāt feel so dumb performing songs like that since Hey, yāknow? Still, it would have been cool to be able to do something like Hey for this eval too.ā He pauses and laughs a little.
āThen again, this place probably isnāt best suited to instruments.ā
Another comfortable silence falls between them for a few moments, with Dowoon watching his brother play around with their group mates before turning back to his fellow trainee.
āKinda wish we didnāt have to be here all afternoon.ā he admits quietly, figuring that the younger boy probably felt the same.Ā āI mean, I get this is a treat and all for us, but.... Iād kinda prefer to back at Royal getting some drumming in.... or at home napping.ā the last comment is delivered with a sheepish laugh.
"Then again, I guess it could be worse...ā Dowoon unconsciously tugs at the collar of his swimshirt.Ā āI mean, at least weāre allowed to just hang out here, and not have to participate in the competitions and stuff.ā
She listens to the male, the corners of her lips tugging upwards because she knows she can definitely relate to the experiences.Ā āThe staff have eyes everywhere, no matter how you look at it. I donāt think I got the company in a ban, probably just me. I forgot to put the hashtags on a teaser post of a dance collaboration I was doing with a friend, so you can imagine how that turned out. He ended up getting in trouble for it too soā¦ā She laughs sheepishly at the memory.
It had been a simple hand-holding picture for a dance cover of Erase by Hyolyn, but⦠the quick post had been come back to kick her in the ass for it. But the more she thinks about the words he says, the more she wonders that about herself.
āWhatās the strictest thing theyāve done around here?ā
Maybe sheād be able to withstand them, but that doesnāt mean she intends to defy the coaches completely. Before, she had been so wholeheartedly devoting herself to Nova, willing to do whatever they wanted before she started to take her musical direction and let them see what she could do with the right kind of push, rather than the content they wanted to see. Of course, there was no room for creative direction in a company like that, or like this. All she could do was prove that she had so much to offer, and not live by that stupid number that ruled her entire trainee life at Nova.
āWait⦠the Triple Threat? The one a few years back or the one last year?ā She had taken part in both, but she wouldāve seen him either way.Ā āā¦Have we met before?ā
"Tell me about it. Some days Iām almost afraid to sneeze wrong in case they decided to take it up the wrong way...ā Dowoon snarks, only half joking. (Then again, his reasons for hiding any budding sniffles are far more serious than heāll let on to anyone else.)Ā āBut urgh~! Iām sorry something like that happened to you too. I mean, I get why they get so wound up about it, but...ā he trails off briefly.
āSometimes their reactions just feel so over the top.ā
Dowoon pauses at Sominās questions, eyebrows furrowed a little as he thinks. He know how other companies have reacted to similar scandals, CONVEXās expulsion of Romeo still coming to the forefront of his mind even a year and a half later. But as for Royal....
Heās been pretty sheltered so far from anything overtly strict, bar that little mishap at the start of the year.
āI donāt really know, to be honest. I mean, I donāt really interact with the coaches or other staff all that much unless--ā he breaks off as Somin suddenly latches on to the Triple Threat competition, his eyes widening a little at her reaction.Ā
Could that be why she looked so familiar....?
āI... I was in the one held last April, in Yongsan-gu.ā he replies a little hesitantly, his ears going red.Ā āI performed Just Right and I was scouted by Royal on my way home after the results...ā he trails off again.
āYāknow... I didnāt want to say anything before, in case I was wrong, but.... I think I have seen you somewhere before, Somin-ssi.ā

RK S-POP TRAINEE MC AUDITION
Yoon Dowoon - Royal Entertainment (+npc trainee)
Date: August 16th 2020
Outfit: x (But with black jeans instead of shorts)
Gif credit: x
When it comes to this audition, itās a matter of pride and principle for Dowoon. He comes from a family of journalists, after all. His mother is a reporter who has had her fair share of television appearances and his stepfather is a news cameraman for KBS. Even when he was sick and used dreams of becoming an idol to escape the dreariness of his hospital, there was always a part of Dowoon that had wanted to follow in their footsteps too. (Granted, more so his motherās that his stepfatherās, but only because he preferred writing and researching to lugging camera equipment around.) Heād even been accepted to Syungkyunwan Universityās Journalism and Mass Communication program before his duties as a Royal trainee meant heād had to defer. Again.
So for him to let an opportunity like this pass him by would be a betrayal of everything heād studied for and been brought up with. Sure it, it wasnāt the serious journalism heād hoped for, but media is media and you have to start somewhere.
Dowoon knows he probably doesnāt have a great chance of being offered anything in reality. His English is still quite basic and heās not the most comedic of people around. (His brotherās idea of comedy does not count.) But heās spent enough of his life watching variety shows to have picked up on some of the tricks of the trade. With the experience heās gained through the Royal Boys acting auditions, various evaluations and the hosting workshop heād attended during the Speak Up event, Dowoon feels that he at least has a good chance of acquitting himself well during the S-Pop auditions, even if heās not offered anything.
Ultimately, he decides to revert to his old philosophy of undertaking an opportunity like this; simply do your best and have fun. If he got offered something, wonderful. If not, it was a good learning experience and a good way to kill time.
On the day of the audition, Dowoonās sitting with his partner as they pore over one of their practice scripts. While the trainee isnāt one he knows very well, she and Dowoon have hit it off well over the past two weeks. Thereās just a spark between them. Their personalities simply mesh well together and their banter has gone from scripted to almost completely natural. Sure, itās maybe not as spontaneous as Dowoon would like, but given that they were practically strangers two weeks ago, heās happy with their progress. Theyāre swapping jokes and playful barbs at each other when their names are called and Dowoonās stomach lurches a little.
(He may care a bit more than heād like to admit.)
Still, he gives his partner an encouraging smile and with a hushed āitās now or never, hm?ā they make their way into the audition room and position themselves in front of the judges and cameras. Dowoon quickly (and discreetly) wipes his hands on his trousers before they bow. And then their audition starts.
āEveryone, hello and welcome to IQS! Iām Yoon Dowoon!ā Pausing to let his partner introduce herself, Dowoon smiles and gives the camera his most excited look possible. āLetās welcome todayās guests! I hope they can keep up with us~ā he adds with a cheeky tone and wink.
Even without any actual guests, Dowoon and his partner make do as theyād practiced since the beginning of the month. They swap jokes and playfully tease each other and their āguests.ā When his partner seems to struggle of words at one point, Dowoon quickly cuts in with a joke to buy her time. Heās not sure if itās good (itās probably not), but it gives his partner enough time to recover and she repays the favour for him when he gets tied up in a tongue twister. Heās so into it that he barely even realizes that time is passing and heās a little surprised when he realizes their coming to the end of their allotted time. As their audition comes to an end, they bow once more to the camera and Dowoon waves to the camera.
āThank you for watching everyone! Please join us again soon~!ā
And with that, their audition is done and theyāre been ushered out of the room for the next group to have their chance. Dowoon hands are shaking a little in excitement and thereās a stupid grin on his face.
Maybe serious journalism isnāt the only career path open to him if this whole idol thing doesnāt work out after all.
Sheās flustered by the fact that he starts calling her seonbae, and sheās at a complete loss for words.Ā āU-Uhm, please! You donāt have to call me that! I mean, itās been a while since I was last here, so Iām back to being a hoobae now, so please donāt call me that!ā Oh gosh, she wasnāt sure what she was expecting when she decided to tell him that.
Somin doesnāt know what to do, except nudge at his shoulders with a sheepish smile to stop him from bowing any further.Ā āI donāt know how Royalās system is like, so Iād really appreciate the help.ā She motions on to the path ahead of them, her smile softening.Ā āAfter you, seonbaenim?ā She canāt begin to imagine how strict her new coaches will be, though she remembers the one time she got in trouble alongside Wonwoo a few years back.Ā āHow long ago did you get signed?ā
Dowoon isnāt sure whether to be relieved or not that Somin seems to be equally flustered at how he reacted to her statement about being a former trainee. As it is, he runs his hand through his hair in agitation as she calls him a sunbae instead.
It feels weird, but Dowoon didnāt want to correct her and sound rude, especially when she insisted that he shouldnāt address her as a senior, despite her technical seniority.
What a mess.
āAh, Iāve been here just over a year... I was scouted just after the TRC Triple Threat thingy... even though I still donāt get why they thought I was worth scouting.ā he finally admits with a laugh, ears still tinged red.Ā āSo trust me, you donāt have to call me a sunbae either. Iām still working on even being worthy of a title like that.ā Eventually the tension in his shoulders eases as they walk down the hall.
āItās strict here, Iām not gonna lie.ā he replies bluntly.Ā āI got the whole company on an SNS ban because I joked about a dating scandal on twitter... so donāt do that.ā Dowoon lets out a sheepish noise that could be called a laugh.Ā āBut if you stick to the rules and everything, itās not half bad here. Even though the coaches and all that are strict, theyāre fair, yāknow? And they do pay attention to hard work and stuff like that. Itās a steep learning curve, but if I could manage it, Iām sure you will too!ā
rose really hadnāt expected for royal girls to actually win the grand prize, the grand prize being a weekend away in the city of busan. especially not after joking around with lisa about betting on it. nonetheless, the weekend away was a good pause, an opportunity for refresh. although it wasnāt nearly long enough because returning to royal entertainment on the monday almost felt cruel. still, she was back in her comfort zone, tucked away in her instrument class for the day, guitar occupying her lap because itās what sheās most comfortable with.Ā
she always liked instrument class, always. from the moment she joined royal entertainment up to now, and probably beyond. rose found comfort in getting to spend a piece of her day playing her guitar. it was a way for her to clear her mind and refresh her thoughts, although of late even her favourite class isnāt doing much for her. absentmindedly, guitar still in hand, rose shuffles past dowoon, who sits at his drum kit.Ā āoh, dowoon!ā rose chimes. she felt like she hadnāt seen the younger in forever ( although she saw him daily, she just hadnāt been paying much attention to anyone except her training of late ).Ā ābusan was really nice. refreshing, i think itās what we all needed.ā she adds with a smile and a nod of the head.
āitās a shame you guys didnāt get to come with.ā rose says , fiddling with the strap of her guitar case. it would of been nice to have a royal vacation. their evaluation vacation looking back was now a treasured memory of roseās.Ā āanyway, how have you been? keeping outta trouble?ā
Any sour feelings Dowoon had felt towards how the evaluation had ended up panning out for him and Changbin had faded away by now and he simply gives an airy wave in response, smiling.
āCanāt be helped. I guess luck just wasnāt on our side, thatās all.ā Because if thereās one thing heās still certain of, itās not down to a lack of talent that theyād come second. Heās still proud of their performance. Besides, given the people he knew live in Busan (namely, his biological father), it probably worked out of the best in the long run.Ā āIām glad you and the others had fun, though. Busan is the best at this time of the year, yāknow?ā he finishes sincerely.
Leaning against the kit, Dowoon laughs and grins at the older girl.Ā āYou know me.ā he jokes, running a hand through his bangs.Ā āIām keeping my head down, even with all the good gossip going around. Donāt want another ban, āspecially when I have a cover in mind...ā he trails off with a slightly guilty smile. Itās going to take a lot longer to get over being one of the people who got the entire company kicked off social media.
(Pity his partner in crime isnāt here anymore...)
Nodding at the guitar in Roseās hand, Dowoon absent-mindedly drums his fingers off the top of on of his drums.Ā āWere you practicing anything special, Noona? It sounds really nice, though I didnāt recognize the tune.ā he admits sheepishly. Granted, he had been drumming, but even pausing hadnāt really given him a chance to identify what Rose had been playing.
[Backdated to July 31st; Samsung inter-company party]
Dowoon had never expected to become as friendly as he is with Changbin, especially considering the fact that heād resented the other boy for getting the place Dowoon had felt should have belonged to his brother.
Even thinking about that now embarrasses him deeply. Particularly when heād come to see what Changbin was like as a person. A little shy and reserved, but with a good sense of humor and so much creativity that Dowoon understood how the younger boy had been able to run a hip-hop crew before the MGAs. And working with Changbin alone for their May evaluation had only strengthened their bond, to the point that Dowoon would happily declare that the other was his friend.
They havenāt worked together for this particular evaluation, nor for the one before that, and although they see each other every day in Royal, itās been hard to actually get together and chat. At least at this pool party they finally have a chance to do so, with both of them hanging back after their performances to simply watch the world go by.
He waits until Changbin finishes talking to another trainee that Dowoon can vaguely recognize (how could anyone not, the guy had hair as long as some of their girls), before he scoots over to sit beside him and they both sit in a comfortable silence for a moment or two.
āYour performance was really good, Changbin-ah.ā He starts simply with a smile.Ā āCould almost say you set off a bomb of excitement in the audience~ā He winces with a sheepish laugh. That joke sucked.
Maybe sheās sighing of relief a little more than she should be, but sheās definitely glad that she can have someone help her around a bit more.Ā āOh, thank goodness. Iām glad that I ran into you.ā She follows after him, though she seems to recall him from somewhere. But she canāt seem to put her finger on it.Ā
She lets out a sheepish smile, thinking it wouldnāt hurt to say it.
āI⦠used to be here before, actually. But uhmā¦ā The thought makes her laugh sheepishly.Ā āI do kickboxing and I somehow padded up someone so much they couldāve turned into my punching bag. I donāt think Iāll be off the hook that easily either.ā Her expression softens into a smile.Ā āI really would need a lot of help. Itās been a long time since Iāve last been here, and since the scheduleās different, I donāt quite know where everything is.ā
When Somin admits that sheās actually a former trainee, Dowoon can feel his cheeks and ears starting to redden and he hastily bows to her, mortified. Sure maybe sheād been signed after him at this particular point in time, but she was still technically his senior.
āA-ah...! Sorry, sunbae!ā he hastily stammers, wishing the ground would just swallow him up.Ā āI shouldnāt have.... I mean--!ā
He has no idea what he means.
Ā Shaking his head and bowing again for good measure Dowoon meshes his hands together, not quite able to look the other girl in the eye after that, even with her smile.
āStill... if you want my help, you got it.ā he mumbles after a minute, glancing up with a slightly timid smile.Ā āThough we probably should hurry up and get to class before weāre torn a new one...ā

July Evaluation - Royal Entertainment
Summer Party Evaluation
Song: The Answer by AB6IXĀ [Dowoon performing Donghyunās lines]
Performing with: @rkdaehwi, @rktaeyang and @rkharuto
Shirt reference: x
(tw for brief mentions of scars and self-image issues)
Dowoon truly doesnāt deserve his mother. After voicing his complaints about the evaluation setting and the chance that he might have to unwilling show his surgery scars, sheād presented him with a a shirt made out of swimwear material. In fact, it reminded Dowoon a little of the top part of a wetsuit. Sheād even gone to the effort of finding one with a high neck to help hide the IV scars on his neck too. She really went above and beyond and Dowoon made a mental note to get her something nice soon. Even if he did disagree with her words as sheād handed over the present.
āDowoon-ah, you know thereās no reason for you to be ashamed of those scars, right? Theyāre proof of your survival!ā
He knows sheās right, but he canāt quite bring himself to accept that yet. Even two years later, heās still trying to wrap his head around everything heās overcome so far. However, as he stands ready to perform with the others, he firmly shoves all thoughts about himself and his hang-ups to the back of his mind.
They have a show to put on, after all.
He hadnāt expected to perform with Taeyang two months in a row, but Dowoon was quite happy that the other had joined their group. Theyād worked wall together last month and had a good foundation to build on for this month. Plus Dowoon had noticed that Daehwi tended to listen to the older Nova trainee for the most part, which made dealing with his little brother a lot easier. Dowoon hadnāt really seen Haruto since the May evaluation, but any bitter feelings heād felt towards the younger trainee for beating him and Changbin during the competition evaluation had long since evaporated, so apart from some gentle teasing about the event, theyād worked together without issue.
Daehwi was, well, Daehwi. But as much as heād complain loudly, Dowoon genuinely enjoyed working with his brother. Plus the fact that they lived together and could practice at home gave them an advantage other groups probably didnāt have.
Adjusting his shirt to makes sure absolutely nothing shows, Dowoon grins as the music begins and they literally call for the audienceās attention. Daehwi really had outdone himself with their choice of song.
neomu gakkabjido meoljido anke
eojeongjjeonghan georireul yujihae
neoye kal dabjange bisangberi ullyeo ring ring
myeot shiganjjae imnyeok jung (my baby)
Singing in tandem with his brother gives Dowoon a thrill. Their voices give off a natural harmony and contrast well, even as they dance around the stage. Combined with Harutoās rapping and Taeyangās vocals, Dowoon finds himself grinning throughout the song, clapping his hands as he dances in an attempts to hype their audience up even more.
Whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo!
After their performance comes to an end, Dowoon affectionately ruffles his brotherās hair despite the otherās complaints and sincerely thanks his other group mates before retreating to a quieter area of the party to eat in peace and watch the rest of the performances.
(And believe it or not, he even gets into the pool for a little while after all. Shirt still on, of course.)
(tw for talking about scars and self-image issues)
Dowoon canāt say heās falling over himself with glee at the prospect of this evaluation. Itās certainly not that he minds working with his brother (it had been more of a happy coincidence than a pre-planned move) or the rest of the group. And while the song mightnāt have been his first choice, it definitely isnāt the worst thing to perform to. No, itās not the performance heās dreading.
Itās the after party Dowoon is dreading. Had it been anywhere else; at a park, an outdoors activity center or even as usual in Seocho itself, Dowoon would have been satisfied. But no. It had to be at a pool. A pool where no doubt heād either be expected to jump into the water at some stage (forget the fact that he wasnāt a very good swimmer) or else get soaked in some kind of dumb water fight, probably started by Daehwi and his friends.
In Dowoonās minded it all added up to him being forced to remove his shirt at some stage and show everyone how broken heād once been. Even though his transplant surgery had been two years ago and the scar has faded to the palest pink, it still stands out on his chest. It brands him for what he had once been. A poor little sick boy with no future.
Dowoon groans and flings himself down onto his stomach dramatically, ignoring his brotherās sudden concern. In his rational mind, Dowoon knows that heās being stupid. He knows that if he ends up losing his shirt, most people will just take a quick glance and go about their day, especially if Daehwi had anything to say about the matter. But that snarky, cruel little voice in his head chants that people will see it and laugh. Or would else stare at him in pity. He doesnāt know which is worse, just that both give him a stomach ache.
Sighing, he eventually pulls himself up when Daehwi gives him another worries poke, making sure to fix a grin onto his face and assure his baby brother that thereās nothing to worry about as they prepare to get back to practicing for the performance.
Itās not like worrying about it now is going to help.
A small chuckle left him at Dowoonās obvious confusion. āHonestly? It was a random guess and the first thing that popped into my mind before I figured that your occupation really wasnāt any of my business,ā he explained trying to clear up any confusion that might be.Ā āAnd well, since you didnāt really say anything else I figured it might actually have been true.ā
Beside that, there was a point the other had overlooked.Ā āThatās true, but my old shop is open from seven in the morning to late at night, and I didnāt always go in for the entirety of that time you know. Figured you had an early evening off or something. I donāt know how security guards work.ā A shrug rose his shoulders before Dowoon followed up with an introduction and some very charming flattery.
āIām Seungkwan,ā he returned with a bright smile.Ā āBoo Seungkwan. And might I say that smiling looks really good on you?ā Whether the other had noticed he was smiling or not Seungkwan wasnāt sure, but it definitely didnāt pass him by. He didnāt call himself a smile junkie for nothing.
āYou gotta take me to try! Iāve always been so busy that I never have time to check out the competition! Sounds interesting.ā
"I have no ideas how security guards work either, to be honest.ā Dowoon shrugged in response, a slightly bemused expression on his face.Ā āI mean, I tend not to go out of my way to talk to them unless I need their help. And I havenāt had to do that in a long time.ā
(Unless you count that time Daehwi decided to run off and hide on him for no good reason, only because Dowoonās face when he was madĀ āwas so funny!ā)
At the compliment, Dowoon stopped short with an confused squawk, staring at his companion as his ears began to turn red once more. He studied Seungkwanās face intently, half expecting the older boy to break into laughter and tease him. But he seemed deadly seriously and Dowoon floundered internally.
He wasnāt being flirted with, was he?!
Hastily he cleared his throat, and stared at the wall of a moment.Ā āI.... uh... Thanks. Never heard that one before, to be honest.ā he eventually mumbles, scratching his head before steering the conversation back onto safer ground.
āI mean, sure. Instead of going to the staff cafeteria at lunch, weāll go the public one at the front of the building! I mean, their chai latte isnāt bad, but likeĀ I said. For a place thatās priced like it is, it could be better. But Iāll let you pass the final judgement.ā
At this point, everything sheās known is gone out the window.Ā
The only expectations of her to be even better than she once was is from the coaches if she ever gets the same ones again. But every companyās different, so thereās no guarantee thatāll happen when everyone teaches differently based on the companyās style. It happens all the time, these kinds of switches. No need to be talking or mentioning about her old history here to anyone.
When she realizes that sheās come across another Royal trainee, thereās a sigh of relief that escapes her lips and her shoulders relax.Ā
āThereās so many things going on, Iāve already nearly walked into the wrong rooms today.ā She smiles sheepishly.Ā āI think itās going to take me some time trying to memorize where everything is. But uhm⦠is it okay if I go with you to the next class?ā Pulling out the paper schedule sheās picked up, she shows it to him.Ā āIs it the exact same one as this?ā
Please say yes.
Setting his newly acquired water into his bag, Dowoon quickly scans the timetable presented to him before smiling again with a nod.Ā āThatās it! Or at least, thatās the schedule Iāve been following here for the past year, and I havenāt gotten into trouble over it. Yet, at least.ā
Motioning to the older girl to follow him, Dowoon smiles and tilts his head a little. Heās not going to lie, heās a little curious about this girl. Especially when he feels as though heās seen her somewhere before. Thereās something familiar about her.
Maybe heās imagining it.
āItās pretty full on, isnāt it?ā Instead he steers the conversation back to the issue at hand.Ā āAt least you didnāt almost get into a fight on your first day...ā he mumbles sheepishly, ears red as he remembers his first day at the complex and his run in with Youngjae.Ā āBut Iām pretty sure theyāll give you some leeway for the first few days, at least. But until then, if you need a tour guide, Iām at your service~āĀ

Being pulled aside in a very secretive manner, Seungkwan couldnāt help but let out a heartily laugh. It obviously bothered the other a lot, but honestly he didnāt think much of it himself and simply commented in greeting. But he supposed that was just the kind of person Dowoon was even though they hadnāt really known each other for a very extended period of time.
The otherās voice slimming down to a silent hiss, Seungkwan totally felt the mood and leaned in to be able to hear better. Serious mode had been activated and he gave listening nods at the right times (which were not a lot as Dowoon had simply decided to reprimand him in a single sentence).
āNo worries man,ā he explained with a thumbs up.Ā āI totally get what you mean. I have things Iād rather not have the coaches know too, so we cool.ā Like for instance already having broken contract the moment he signed it by dating. But that was a trouble heād take at another time.
āBeside itās not really lying if what you did was simply neglect to correct me, am I right or am I right?ā
Dowoon blinked a little in surprise at the ease of which Seungkwan agreed to not bring up the subject again. Heād been expecting even a brief argument, or some trolling at least. Now his ears were red for a different reason and his laugh matched the embarrassment he felt.
āWell, when you put it that way....ā he mumbled, scuffing the floor with the toe of his trainer before gesturing to the other boy that they didnāt need to be hiding away any more and should probably head towards their next class.Ā āStill, I dunno why you jumped straight to the conclusion I was a security guard. I mean, there are stores that stay open in the Dongdaemun Market until like 4 AM or something like that.ā
(Not that he ever stopped to look at them, getting home to sleep had always been his main priority.)
Shaking his head in dismiss the subject, Dowoon offered his companion a shy but sincere smile.Ā āWe never really introduced ourselves properly, did we? Iām Yoon Dowoon, from Jogno-gu. Welcome to Royal!ā He paused and laughed quietly.
āBetween you and me, the chai latte here isnāt as good as the one you make.ā
Date: 21st July 2020
Location: Yoon/Lee family apartment. Jogno-gu, Seoul
[tw for mentions of surgery, death and hospitals]
When Dowoon all but falls into the apartment after the dayās training, all he wants to do is to crawl into bed for the few scant hours Royal gives him to sleep. And had it been any other night, he would have, without hesitation.
But this isnāt any other night. Itās the 21st of July. This day two years ago, he was given a new lease of life by someone heād never met and will, quite frankly never be able to thank enough. Even what heās about to sit down and do seems like a poor repayment to the family whose sonās heart beats inside his own chest. But itās all he has to offer them.
He can forgo sleep this one night, for the sake of trying to express his gratitude to the man who unwittingly became his familyās hero.
Taking a seat at his desk, a full sugar soda and several candy bars as companions on this night, Dowoon studies the letter heās been writing for... a while. Heās lost track of time, in all honesty. The creative writing classes never taught him how to write a letter like this, how to tell a still grieving family that, in a twisted way, youāre grateful that their sonās death gave you life. In all honesty, Dowoon wouldnāt blame them in the slightest if they hated him, had the situation been reversed and he was getting a letter from a person whoād gotten Daehwiās organās, heād hate that person too.
Maybe.
Maybe not.
He doesnāt know. He doesnāt know how heād feel in that situation, he barely knows how he feels in this one!
All he knows is that he owes this family a very overdue letter. What they do with it and how they feel afterwards is out of his control.
(He hopes they donāt hate him too much, though. Because Dowoon wishes, at least for their sakes, that things didnāt have to pan out the way they did.)
To the family of my donor
Hello. My name is DW. I hope you are keeping well!
...Iām sorry. Thatās a stupid thing to say, isnāt it? Forgive me, Iāve been fighting for a long time to get my feelings into words. This is why this letter is so late, why itās two years after I had my transplant. Until now, I had no idea what to say. I still donāt, so please forgive my ramblings.
Like I said, exactly two years ago today (July 21st, 2018), I received your sonās heart in a transplant. Iād been waiting for about four years for one, and my health was getting worse every year. My mom says itās a miracle it ever happened; Iād been rejected for a previous heart a few weeks beforehand. And that led to me kind of giving up.... I was close to dying when we told that this new heart was available. So with everything I have, thank you, thank you, THANK YOU. Without your sonās generosity, I wouldnāt be here. I know itās not the kind of generosity youād want to receive gratitude from, though.
Instead of focusing on sad things, let me tell you what Iāve done with the new life Iāve been given. In these past two years, Iāve made sure not to waste my second chance! Before my surgery, I was in a band in high school. (We broke up, though..) So I began to participate in various competitions to do with music. I was an extra in video game commercial last spring (I only have a second of screen time, so you would never actually KNOW it was me.). Then I participated in talent competition. Somehow, this led to me being offered a trainee contract with an entertainment company!
For so long, the dream of becoming an idol or even taking my drumming further was just that, a dream. Now Iām slowly taking the steps to achieve that dream. And itās all thanks to you and your son. And thanks to you guys, I was able to welcome my little sister into this world too. She and my brother are the most important things in my life. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to spread the rest of my life with them.
I know my words wonāt ever erase the pain you must feel for losing your son the way you did. I pray for him every night before I sleep. Our family thinks of yours often and we thank you every day. I know weāll never meet, but Iām hoping that from here on out, life treats you well. I know itās probably hard to hear something like this from me, who SHOULD be dead, Iām praying for a happy future for you.
I will not squander this precious gift your son gave me. From the bottom of my (new) heart, thank you for everything.
DW
When the letter is finished, hours after everyone else in the house has succumbed to sleep and the date on his phone reads July 22nd, Dowoon creeps into the kitchen and lays the envelope on the counter top. He knows that in the morning rush, both he and his brother will simply not register its existence, but that his mother will pass it onto to the hospital and that theyāll send it to its recipients.
