Weighing up to 8,000 pounds, the hippo is the heaviest land animal after the elephant. The eyes and ears of a hippopotamus are on top of its head, so it can keep watch for enemies—mainly crocodiles—while lying low in the water. Hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) is a graceful animal underwater despite it’s bulk. Although hippos are not nocturnal they mostly forage at night and spend the day socialising, sleeping and digesting their food. These large animals mostly eat grass although some foraging on carcasses has been recorded. Historically hippos ranges through sub-Saharan Africa but populations now only remain in East Africa living in deep still water close to pasture lands. Hippos are classed as vulnerable and are listed on CITES (Convention on the International Trade of Endangered Species). Five sub species of hippo have been described but the validity of these classifications has been questioned.
