Summary: Beth is forced to keep an injured person who was dumped on her daughters bed for a gang member. What happens when she invites a certain friend who is a doctor.
Part 2
"That is not what I meant when I said we'd do another job and who is that guy?" Elizabeth says as she standing in front of Rio. "He works for me." Rio answers with his arms on his knees as he's sitting. "Do--does he wash the money?" Annie questions looking at Rio. "Regardless, there's been a miscommunication." Elizabeth says. "Oh, so you think you can pick and choose what you wanna do and when you wanna do it?" Rio questions looking at her amused.
"She thought it would be like driving for Uber." Ruby adds in. "Who's at fault is not important." Elizabeth says making Ruby and Elaine roll their eyes. "We are not qualified to take care of a gunshot victim." Elizabeth responds but Annie interrupts. "Well Elaine handled it well actually" Annie says shrugging.
"I mean, your friend needs professional medical attention." Elizabeth says causing rio to shake his head. "Rude. Am I not good enough " Elaine adds in. "Not like that. I didn't mean it like that I justâ" Elizabeth says defending herself. Rio's gaze sharpens as his eyes land on Elaine, who's standing slightly behind the others, arms folded and still visibly tense from having just dressed the man's wound. He tilts his head. "Who's this?"
The room tenses again. Elizabeth hesitates for a second too long. "She's... a friend."
"She's a doctor," Ruby blurts out. "she's really good."
Elaine gives a half wave. "Hi."
Rio doesn't smile. "Cute." He looks between the women slowly, letting the silence stretch. "So you're bringing in outside help now?"
"No, it wasn't like that," Elizabeth says quickly, stepping forward. "She was the only one who knew how to keep him from dying. We panicked. We didn't tell her anything. We justâneeded help."
"Well you did now. Your doing sketchy jobs for a gang memeber. What else is there?" Elaine questions crossing her arms. Ruby shoots her a look, panicked. "Elaineâ"
"No," Elaine continues, stepping forward now, her voice calm but firm. "Don't try to play it down now. You dragged me into this. You brought me into something you clearly don't have control over."
Rio's eyes narrow, the air in the room tightening like a noose. "You got a lot of opinions for someone who wasn't invited."
Elaine doesn't blink. "And you've got a lot of nerve dropping your dying guy in someone's house, a kids room by the way and then getting mad when they try to keep him alive. I should get paid for my services."
A beat of silence. Rio stares at her for a long, tense moment. The smirk he wears isn't playful this time.
"You want a paycheck?" he says finally, voice low, deadly calm. "Be careful, sweetheart. The moment you start asking for payment, you're on the payroll. And people on my payroll?" He tilts his head, eyes locked on hers. "They don't get to walk away."
"So you saved him. Good for you. Just rememberâevery favor in this world comes with a cost. And now you're in it... whether you like it or not."
He glances at Elizabeth, then Ruby, then back to Elaine. "I never asked to be apart of whatever this is" Elaine says nervously. "Next time you want to play doctor, make sure you know who you're stitching up." He says making Elaine go quiet for a second.
"It's good that you bought her that kid wasnt going to no hospital" Rio explains. "Why not?"elizabeth questions. "'Cause there's people looking for him." Rio answers. "And if those people show up here?" Annie questions making rio chuckle. "Trust me, ain't nobody gonna shoot up Beaver Cleaver's house" Rio says as he pulls out a stack of money from his pocket. "No im sorry that isnt gonna work" Elizabeth says as he pauses. "No?" Rio questions as he pulls out more money.
" I-" Elizabeth says before sighing. "Oh. Mm." Annie clears her throat as she watches him take more money out. "I have children" Elizabeth says looking as rio pulls out more money. "He's up there in my daughters bed. I'm never gonna get that blood out" Elizabeth pleads making Elaine give her a look. "I mean I don't know the full story but from what Ruby and Annie said you asked for this" Elaine adds in. "I didn't know it would be this" she responds as Elaine shakes her head.
"I mean she could sleep on the floor. Kids love that stuff" Annie suggests shrugging cautiously. "I'm pretty sure it will cover for a new mattress" Ruby comments as Elizabeth looks at the money. "I'll even add a little more for our new doctor" Rio says smirking as he pulls out more money before looking at Elaine.
"So, would we get that money now, or...?" Annie asks making the rest of the women look at rio. "When I pick him up." Rio answers making Ruby look at Annie before looking at Rio. "When's that?" Ruby questions. "When I pick him up." Rio repeats.
"Sounds fair." Annie says nervously. "So, we got a deal, ladies? Or what?" Rio questions as he looks at the ladies.
....
"I can't believe this shit! I can't believe you got me into this mess" Elaine mumbles as she slumps in her seat. "Me?" Elizabeth questions not taking her eyes off the road. "Who else would I be talking to? Yes you Elizabeth" Elaine snaps.
Silence settles over the car, thick and uncomfortable. Only the soft hum of the engine and the buzz of the city beyond the windows fill the space. Elizabeth exhales for the 100th time. ,"For the last time, I didn't ask for this."
"Uh, actually... you did," Ruby cuts in from the back seat, tone flat. "You literally said, 'Iâ I offered to do another job.' That was a quote."
Elizabeth groans. "I didn't think helping meant stashing a bleeding guy with a gun in my kid's bedroom!"
Elaine turns, her voice cold. "You never really think about other people, do you?"
Elizabeth's eyes narrow. "Of course I do. We all needed the money, Elaineâwe're going through a lot."
"Then earn it the right way."
"We tried," Elizabeth snaps. "It's not enough. Ruby's daughter has medical bills the size of a mortgage. Her job doesn't even cover prescriptions."
Elaine shakes her head and looks out the window. "I got dragged into this mess, and all I did was help someone who was dying," she mutters, pulling out her phone. "It's not all about you" Elizabeth says. "Guys.." Ruby comments. "Are you serious? I never said it was. But you didn't even think about what this would do to me or anyone else , Elizabeth. Not once" Elaine snaps back before looking out the window.
....
The next day, Elaine and the others met up at Elizabeth's house. "Hey, I brought chili. Stan made it. It's spicy," Ruby announces as she steps through the front door, setting a steaming pot on the kitchen table. "Thank you. I'm starving." Annie gets up from the stairs and heads straight for the kitchen. "Did you stay up all night?" Ruby asks, glancing at Elizabeth, who looks like she hasn't blinked since sunrise.
Elaine leans against the banister, arms crossed. "I mean, she stayed up all night. I slept next to her like a baby," Annie says casually as she fills a bowl. "I came over around six," Elaine adds, her tone neutral but tired. Ruby lowers her voice. "Is he still out cold?" she asks, nodding toward the ceilingâwhere the bleeding, gun-toting mystery man still lies unconscious in a little girl's bed.
Elizabeth sighs. "Yeah. Maybe we need, like, smelling salts or something."
Annie, mid-bite, scoffs. "Right. Because it's 1892."
Elaine snorts, shaking her head. Suddenly, a loud thump echoes from upstairs. The women freeze. "What the hell was that?" Elaine says, eyes wide. They race up the stairs, breath caught in their throats, only to find the bed empty. "Oh my God..." Annie whispers, staring at the tangled sheets. "His gun. Go get his gun!" Elizabeth snaps, her voice urgent.
"Wâwhere is it?" Elaine stammers. "Linen closet,"Elizabeth says quickly. Elaine and Annie bolt down the hallway. "Hurry!" Ruby calls, trailing behind. Elizabeth steps deeper into the room, scanning every corner like the walls might speak. "Where in the linen closet?" Annie hisses from outside. "Top shelf!" Elizabeth shouts back. "Top shelf!" Ruby repeats, relaying it as she rushes to help. Elaine stretches up, yanking down towels. "There's no gun in here!" she says, frustrated.
"Uh... a little help?" she calls out. Annie and Ruby join her, digging through linen in a panic, flinging sheets and bottles aside.
Thenâ A voice. Rough. Alive.
"Where am I?"
They freeze. "Where am I?!" he shouts again, louder, fury creeping into his tone. The women exchange a terrified glance before they run back to the room. He's standing now. Pale, sweating, confusedâbut holding the gun. His grip shakes, but his eyes don't.
"Uh... my house," Elizabeth says slowly, backing away. "You're in my house. My daughter's room."
The gun points straight at her.
"Who the hell are you?"
"Someone... who knows the man you work for," Elizabeth says, voice measured but tense. The man's eyes snap to her, then to Annie as she adds, "He said you'd be safe here."
He stares at them for a long second, then says flatly, "I need a car."
The women exchange a glance. "Give me your car keys," he growls. When no one moves, he suddenly shouts, "Give me the damn keys!" The outburst makes them all flinch. Annie tries to reason, holding her hands out slightly. "Do you even understand that we saved youâ"
"I said give me the keys!" he snaps, cutting her off, gun now raised. "Just give it to him!" Ruby cries, eyes wide with panic, her voice almost cracking. She looks at Elizabeth, desperate. Elizabeth hesitates, heart pounding. "My keys... they're downstairs," she says slowlyâthen her gaze lands on Elaine's keychain attached to her pants.
"Elaine. Give him yours."
All eyes turn. Elaine's mouth tightens. "Hell no." She folds her arms. "I'm in this mess by association. you asked for this you give him your damn keys." Elaine says but the man then interrupts. "Give me the goddamn keys or I'll shoot" he threatens as pointing the gun at all of the women. " I took the bus, I took the bus." Ruby says scared. ""My nails are weak, I can't get the ring off!" Annie cries, fumbling with her keychain, visibly shaking.
Elizabeth's voice cracks. "Please..." Her eyes fill with tears. "Elaine, please."
Elaine stands frozen for a secondâjaw tight, heart pounding. Then with a bitter sigh, she yanks the keys from her bag and tosses them across the room. They clatter at his feet. He pauses, eyes sweeping over them one last time. Then he grabs the keys, turns, and bolts out the front doorâleaving only silence and the echo of his footsteps behind.

Summary: Toni forms an unsuspecting friendship with Christopher that turns into something more. As her feelings towards him continue to grow she starts to  unravel the secrets that surround him and in return, he unravels her completely.
Chapter 4: Let the games begin
After the eventful night between Toni and Chris, it was like the days went by rather quickly and before she knew it, Friday was here and Toniâs nerves were coming along for the ride. When she came home that night and told her girls about what transpired with her and the mysterious business mogul they gave out beaming smiles and all three of them jumped around, excited that Toni was going out on a date. And of course, donât even get her started on Aaliyah, the woman was more than elated, and every chance she got she made sure to bother Toni about her new âboyfriend.â
Toni was walking in from work at Print Monthly and let out a yawn. Working two jobs, and writing a new article was slowly catching up with her, but with enough caffeine, she thinks she could make it through. She took off her heels and placed her keys on the entrance table trying to stifle yet another yawn, that was on its way out of her mouth. As she went further into the apartment she didnât hear any movement from either of the girlâs rooms so she figured she was home alone. Toni went into her room not caring to turn on the light since she had a small night light in the corner and shut the door. She dropped her purse on the floor and took off her clothes, only leaving on her bra and panties. Toni sighed and shuffled to her bed, face planting into it as she wrapped her sherpa throw around her body. Since the AC was fixed the day before her place was nice and cool and all she wanted to do was take a small nap.
But before she could float away to unconsciousness her door was rushed open and the light flicked on, âOh no bitch, get up!â
Toni groaned hearing Rockyâs voice and covered her face with the blanket, wishing for  a couple of minutes of sleep, âAntonia Kelis Thompson, up now!â
The blanket was ripped away from Toni, and she put her face into the pillow, âJust five minutes,â she groaned. Â
âNo, get up! Sage made you a smoothie to help with your energy before she left for the grocery store and you need to drink it so we can get you together for tonight.â
Toni turned her head and looked at Rocky, she was standing next to her bed with her eyebrow raised and a hand on her hip and the other was outstretched with said green smoothie in her grasp.
âItâs only six Rocky, we meet up at nine.â
True to his word, Chris hit her up and they set up a time and place to meet up, the place being an escape room to which Toni was particularly thrilled about. She had always wanted to go to one and she vaguely remembered mentioning it to him on one of their morning talks at the cafe. After they arranged their night out they continued texting each other throughout the day and it felt good to have that feeling of giddiness whenever she heard her phone ding and it possibly being him.
Toni huffed and sat up, sitting cross-legged on her bed and took the drink from Rockyâs hand. Taking a few sips she scrunched up her face from the taste but soldiered on when she saw the look Racquel gave her. When she finally finished the last bits of the smoothie, she put the glass on her nightstand and turned back to her friend. Â
âAll finished, whatâs next on the list warden?â
Racquel rolled her eyes, âSo damn dramatic, go take a shower and Iâll dive into that mess  you call a closet to find you something to wear.â
Toni stretched her limbs as she stood up from the bed while Rocky shooed her to the bathroom grabbing her towel from the back of the door in the process.
âAnd donât forget to shave bitch!â Rocky yelled out.
âI shaved my legs yesterday, why the hell am I going to do them again?â Toni said poking her head out from the doorway, her confusion was evident.
âIâm not talking about your legs, girl,â Raquel said, winking. Toni didnât plan on sleeping with Chris tonight but with how crazy the attraction was between them anything was possible. So with understanding and gratitude, Toni simply nodded and backed into the bathroom, closing the door and getting to work.
After the long half-hour of exfoliation, shaving, and showering, Toni came out of the bathroom feeling fresh and squeaky clean and walked into the sight of her bed strewn with clothes. She took in the sight of her best friends arguing with a piece of clothing in their hands about which outfit would work best. She chose to ignore them knowing that whatever they picked would be applicable and tightened the towel on her form, going to her vanity to do her makeup and hair. The girls interrupted her a few times showing her what they chose and Sage helped Toni curl her hair in the back. Music and bouts of laughter were heard throughout the home and the minutes ticked by getting closer to when Toni was deemed to leave. She was just putting on her light blue jeans when her phone went off, interrupting the song that was playing on her Bluetooth. Rocky and Sage continued talking about whether she should wear heels or sneakers, and Toni finished buttoning her pants walking over to her device. The name Chris was on her screen, and before the voicemail picked up she answered.
âHello,â she said.
âThere she is, thought you werenât gonna answer,â Chrisâs smooth voice came through the phone, making Toniâs stomach flutter with butterflies. She could vaguely hear noises of machinery in the background but she didnât think anything of it because as quickly as the noise came it was gone, like he went into a separate room.
âI mean I didnât have to pick up, especially since you're interrupting me getting ready for my date,â Toni sat down on the bench at the end of her bed.
âOh, word? Whoâs the lucky man?â
Toni looked down at her nails, âSome guy I met a couple of weeks ago, he ainât all that but I decided to have mercy and give him a chance.â
Chris laughed into the receiver, âI bet heâs hype as fuck to take your pretty ass out.â
Toni shrugged like he could see her, âI mean, I am kind of great.â Â
âThat you are Antonia, that you are.â
Toni covered her mouth with her fingers, trying to control the megawatt smile that was threatening to break out. They knew each other barely a month and already the way Chris made Toni feel was slightly alarming. âIs everything okay though, because if you need to change the time or something thatâs fine.â
âNah we good, just wanted to check up on you. And make sure I wasnât gonna do an escape room by myself.â
âNo worries, Iâll be there,â Toni said grinning.
âAiight, so Iâll see you soon yeah?â
âYes, sir nine oâclock.â
Chris chuckled, âAight mama, later.â
Toni hung up and put her phone back on the charger, âIâm guessing from all the flirting we just heard, that was him,â Sage asked.
She shook her head, âYeah, he was calling to make sure we were still on tonight.â Toni went and looked at the shoe options they picked out, thankful that her friends lended out a helping hand. Â
âWe think the all-white Nikeâs would look great with your outfit. Plus it will give your feet a break from the heels and you can run around as you play the game with your boyfriend,â Rocky smirked when Toni gave her a dirty look at her use of the âBâ word.
âI agree,â she told them. After bending down to put her sneakers on, Toni stood up and examined her outfit in the mirror, liking how it looked. The white bodysuit accentuated her curves and the light blue jeans and sneakers really brought everything together, making her feel comfortable but be cute at the same time. Toni sprayed her perfume and got her crossbody bag and phone, listening to her friends give her a pep talk as she walked to the front door.
âWe put some wipes in your bag and some mints as well just in case your breath gets hot,â Sage said, following behind Toni.
âOh yes and some pepper spray if he decides to get handsy,â Raquel continued, bringing up the rear, âYou never know he can turn into an asshole when the clock strikes twelve.â
Sage gave Rocky a glare and nudged her, âI doubt it will come to that, Racquel but it is always good to be safe.â
âYes, it is,â Rocky grumbled, rubbing her sore side. Sage may be small but her elbow had some power behind it.
Toni turned to them when they reached the door, âThanks guys for all the help.â
âWe got your back girl, you know that.â
âAnd have fun tonight please, you deserve it and it will do you good to get some dick. It might help you stop being so damn uptight.â
âSage!â Toni gasped, hitting the girlâs arm while Rocky stood next to her nodding in agreeance.
âI canât stand you guys.â Toni picked up the keys she left on the small table by the door and opened her arms, âAlright give me some loving.â
They all came in for a group hug, just like they always did back in college, âLove you hoes,â Toni murmured.
âWe love you too,â Sage and Rocky said together.
Pulling into the parking lot Toni texted Chris letting him know she had arrived and while she waited on his reply she stared down at her phone and went through her social media. Suddenly a knock on her window made her jolt in the seat and look up with a hand to her chest. She let out a breath when she saw it was Chris at her window, his eyebrow raised and his mouth curved into a smirk.
âGeez Chris, you scared the shit out of me,â Toni exclaimed through the closed window.
She reached next to her, to get her purse and took her keys out of the ignition, placing them and her phone into her bag. She unlocked the door and he opened it for her, a smile still residing on his lips, âMy bad ma, I didnât mean to scare you.â
Toni side-eyed him as she got out, âLiar, you know damn well itâs too dark for your ass to be playing games.â
âOh shit, donât tell me big bad Antonia is scared of the dark.â Chris closed her car door behind her and Toni hit her key fob locking the vehicle. They began walking through the sparsely lit up parking lot, heading towards the building that had MadeYa Look Escape Room in bright lights at the front.
âListen, frightening things live in the night, so donât shame me.â
Chris chuckled as they walked side by side, his hands behind his back, âNah, no shaming here baby. I used to be the same way, years ago.â
Toni felt a jolt at this new nickname, she hadnât been called baby from the opposite sex in years and it made her feel warm inside to be hearing it from him. Toni decided to play it cool and not show how much the term of endearment affected her, but she secretly promised herself she would gush about it later in the privacy of her home.
âWhat made you stop being scared?â Toni asked as they finally reached the entrance.
She went to open the door but his ring covered hand was suddenly on top of hers, making her palm sweat on the cool metal of the handle, âWhen I became the scary thing to the monsters.â
Toni noticed the sudden shift between them as she gazed into his dark brown orbs. You would think after a statement like that she would be afraid but she felt perfectly fine, safe even. She didnât know what to think about that, so she intended to not think about it at all.
âI forgot to tell you earlier but you look beautiful,â Chris said, his eyes not leaving hers, he was close enough that he could hear her breath stutter but didnât comment. Toni bit her lip and pushed a piece of hair behind her ear.
âYou got your nose pierced,â she said, surprised. Toni saw the faint glint of the piercing from the glare of the lights and even though she never dated a guy with one it was different and it fit him perfectly.
Chris took note of the change of subject but he nodded anyway and ran his tongue across his bottom lip, making it shine, âYou like it?â Â
âItâs cute,â She said with faux disinterest. Just like last time, with the close proximity they were in Toni could smell his cologne that was dark and subtle. They would kiss if she stood on her tiptoes.
âYou ready for me to whoop your ass in this game?â Chris teased, and just like that the spell was broken and the light-hearted flirting came back into play.
Toni scoffed, grateful for the break from the tension âPlease, the question is are you ready?â
With her hands still encompassed in his, they both opened the door and went to the front desk to pay and get instructions. The brunette clerk who they later learned was named Debbie was none the wiser to the something that transpired moments before, as she explained rules and questioned which room they wanted to play. While the middle-aged woman was talking, he had his hand rested on the small of Toniâs back and tried as she might she couldnât focus on anything else but the heat of his palm. Luckily, another couple came in after them and they were able to play against the pair in the zombie apocalypse escape room. Before the game started Toni and Chris set up a bet for whoever solved the most clues even though they were on the same team. Toni ran her hand through her loose curls to put her hair up in a ponytail waiting for the countdown and noticed Chrisâs outfit, âYou donât think youâll get hot running around in your jacket?â
As per usual Chris was clad in all black but he had on a jean jacket over a black shirt this time rather than a regular button-up. Â
âIâm straight,â Chris said nonchalantly. Before she could interrogate him further, Debbieâs voice came onto the intercom letting them know she was starting the countdown. Quickly, ten seconds turned to one, and the game began.
The couple walked out of the room breathless and delighted with how well the game turned out. They beat the newlyweds by a landslide with one minute to spare, and unfortunately to Chrisâs exasperation, Toni solved most of the clues and now she had full reign over tonight.
âCongrats guys!â The clerk complimented as she handed them two free t-shirts for winning and even offered to snap a picture of them to put on their winner board. Chris declined grumbling about how he hated taking pictures but of course, when Toni gave him puppy dog eyes and reminded him she was the captain of tonight he grudgingly relented. Only on the grounds of them taking the photo on their personal phones and that Toni promised not to rag on him the rest of the date. Â
Toni gave the woman her phone already opened to the camera app and they both took their place in front of the winnerâs board. She didnât know where to position herself, not wanting to be too much in Chrisâs personal space if he wasnât comfortable with it, but he made the decision for her when he put his arm on her shoulders and brought her in close, making Toniâs palms sweat. She quickly decided to wrap her arms around his waist praying he couldnât feel her heart practically beat out her chest when she leaned against his side. They both looked at the camera with big smiles earning an âAwww you two are adorable!â from Debbie.
As Toni went to pull away, she brushed against something solid and what felt oddly like steel under his jacket. Stepping back Toni pondered over the fact that the object that she touched was most likely a gun and that was probably the reason why he didnât want to take off his jacket before the game.
âHere you go hun,â Debbie said, passing Toni her phone. Â
Toni graciously thanked her while she took the device and tried to school her features. She knew people had guns, even her father had some locked away at his house but something about him hiding it made her stomach roll.
They went out into the cool night and Toni walked next to Chris quietly still thinking, âSo where to boss, since you running shit now.â Â
A beat passed and she could see Chris in her peripheral take a look at her, wondering why she wasnât responding.
âYou good mama?â He inquired.
She was acting like such a dumb ass, it wasnât like he was her boyfriend he didnât have to necessarily tell her why he had a gun and she was fine when he told her the monsters were afraid of him. So why did the gun affect her so much?
Toni looked over at him seeing his brows knitted in worry and decided to push the issue aside for a second. âYep, but the real question is are you good after that ass whooping I gave you? Mr. Iâm gonna win just watch.â
Chris groaned, âI thought you promised you wasnât gonna flame me.â
âObviously I lied, I just wanted you to stop whining and take the damn picture.â
âNah, I just think you wanted a pic so you could look at it and fantasize about me all the time.â
Toni snickered and pushed him, âPlease, donât flatter yourself.â Â
They were still talking when they finally reached her car. Toni leaned against her door, she could see his Range a couple of spaces from hers. âSo what now Antonia?â
He asked while he stood in front of her, his hands in his pockets.
âNot sick of me yet?â Toni wondered, tilting her head.
âNever that darlinâ.ââ
Toni cleared her throat feeling her cheeks burn, damn him, he knew exactly what the hell he was doing. Not wanting to put it off any longer she made the choice to just ask him about the gun, not wanting to proceed with the night without being in the know. Â âCan I...ugh this is probably so stupid but can I ask you a question first before we leave here?â
He straightened when he heard the way she stuttered like she was worried about questioning him, âGo ahead.â
Toni crossed her arms, âYou can tell me it's none of my business and honestly itâs not that big of a deal but is there a reason why you didnât want to tell me you were carrying a gun? I felt it while we were taking the picture.â
She was expecting him to get upset about her interrogation  but his posture went lax, seeming happy that that was what she wanted to ask.
âI didnât say anything âcause I wasnât sure if it was gonna freak you out. I use it for protection only and I should have told you instead of assuming.â Â
Toni sighed and rubbed her forehead, âNo, I apologize it just took me by surprise is all. I knew someone that carried and it always seemed like he used it more to showcase how much of a dick he was rather than use it as a safety precaution.â
âHey,â Chris raised Toniâs chin, making her focus on him. âDonât ever be scared to ask me somethinâ. Â Even if I donât like the question, imma always try and give you as much of the truth that I can, aight?â
âOkay,â Toni said.
âOkay,â Chris dropped his hand and grabbed Toniâs holding it in his grasp, still looking at her, âSo we gonna chill in this parking lot all night or we gonna go to the next spot?â
Toni lightly squeezed his hand with a mischievous glint in her eye, âI know the perfect place.â
âAiight then,â Chris walked to the passenger side of her car waiting, âLetâs go.â
âYouâre not gonna drive your car?â Toni wrinkled her nose, puzzled whilst unlocking the car.
Chris opened the door and simply said, âNope I trust you,â before getting into the vehicle leaving Toni speechless.
Toni let out a harsh breath and whispered âThis man is too fine,â getting into the car as well. It seemed like their night had only begun.

Chapter 3: Welcome back
âFinally,â Toni said with relief as she pulled up in her Honda Accord at Lux. She made sure to get to the bar early and was happy when she got there with five minutes left to spare. Taking a moment to herself before going in, she tried to occupy her mind with checking her hair and makeup in the rearview mirror. Try as she must, doubt began to settle in the forefront of her mind, in if she was making the right decision.Â
Toni felt her heart begin to beat faster and faster. Out of breath, and body hot she turned her AC on at full blast, Dr. Simoneâs instructions ringing in her head.
Now Antonia if you ever feel like youâre going to have an anxiety attack, I want you to try this breathing exercise called âCalming Breathâ.â
Toni listened to her therapist Dr. Simone with rapt attention, âHonestly doc, Iâll take anything to just stop this shit, excuse my french.â
Dr. Simone chuckled, amused by her slip up. âNo need to apologize, Antonia. How many times do I have to tell you this is a place where you can express yourself freely without judgment?â
âI know, I know.â
âNow like I was saying before, I want you to try an exercise called âCalming Breath.â What that entails is you taking a long, slow breath through your nose, and holding your breath to the count of three then exhaling slowly through your lips. It should help you relax your muscles in your face, shoulders, and stomach. We can practice a couple of times if you would like.â
Toni shook her head in understanding, âThanks doc, but I think I got it.â After a few seconds of silence, Dr. Simone gave her a knowing look. âBut just in case I donât have it, can you repeat the steps again?

Hearing Dr. Simoneâs directions, Toni began her breathing exercises, breathe in, hold, breathe out. She did the steps a couple more times until she slowly felt her heartbeat go back to normal. Softly smiling Toni was proud of herself for getting her anxiety in check until she looked at the clock on her dashboard.
She had two minutes until her shift started.
âFuck, I canât be late when Iâm literally sitting right in front of the placeâ
Toni made sure she had all her belongings and shut off the ignition, quickly hopping out and closing her car door. Walking to the entrance, she took in the building, like every bar it looked mediocre in the daytime, with its red brick and black awning. But at night thatâs when itâs beauty really shined especially when they turned on the fairy lights outside that gave the establishment a welcoming shine. She reached the entrance and was debating if she should walk-in or call Avery, but before she could decide the door swung open, almost hitting her in the face.
âWoah!â Toni said, quickly jumping back and almost breaking her neck in the process from her heeled boots.
âOh, shit my fault ma!â
Toni heard a low voice apologize as she was looking down at her scuffed boots. Anger and embarrassment flooded through her, she was angry because her boots had white marks all over them and embarrassed because of course, this would happen to her of all people.
âShit, you not crying right? Your shoes are fire but they not worth your tears.â
Is this nigga for real?
Toni finally looked up to show the man she wasnât having a breakdown, âFirst of all, Iâm not crying, I'm pissed and second of all the door is literally glass how did yo-?!â
âOh shit Antonia?!â
Startled by the interruption, she stared confused at how he knew her name. A few seconds passed until the realization set in after she took in his dark skin and short box braids. Heâs had the same hairstyle since college.
âSean?!â
âYoo! I canât believe itâs you!â Sean came in for a hug as Toni stood there in shock, her hands came up awkwardly to hug him back. âItâs good to see you girl! How you been?!â
Iâm emotionally damaged, I havenât had sex in months and I donât know what Iâm doing with my life.
âIâm good, and I go by Toni now mostly. How are you?â
Sean shook his head, âMy fault, my fault.â
Her question wasnât answered as Sean took a step back, eyes roving over her body. He had a smirk on his lips as he took in her black sheer top, fitted black jeans, and her slightly damaged snake print block heeled boots. âDamn Ant- I mean Toni, you look even better than you did in college.â
Toni was grateful that he caught himself and at the same time she sucked her teeth. âYou are so full of shit, reminds me of back in the day when you would flirt with all the girls in our Humanities class, and Honey would get pissed at you for it.â
His smirk noticeably dropped, showcasing that her sister was a sore topic. Trying to lighten the mood Toni bumped him with her hip, âAnyways, I canât believe you still work here, looking cute with your all black ensemble on.â He was wearing black, from the t-shirt to the jeans and even his Vans.
It reminds me of a certain someone.
âYou know how I do.â He told her, popping his faux collar, âMy I.T hours are slim to none sometimes, so a couple of months ago I asked Avery for work to keep me above water.â
Toni let out a harsh breath, âThatâs why Iâm here too, I just hope I can remember my orders, hell even how to make drinks properly...â
Sean nodded and wrapped his arm around Toniâs shoulders, noticing her growing unease. âHey, no need to be nervous. You know this bar like the back of your hand and from what I remember I know you wouldâve brushed up on your skills before you even thought about calling Avery for a job. I got your back, with whatever, so stop worrying about stupid shit.â
Toni looked up at him and saw the sincerity on his face. When they met freshman year he always treated her like a sibling, making sure to help her out if she ever needed him.
âYou getting soft on me nigga?â Toni asked, breaking the sappiness between them. She lightly punched his stomach, making Sean playfully wince in pain. She laughed and wrapped her arm around his side, âDamn, you really are soft Sean.â
âShut up killa, before I tell Avery on you for being rude to his favorite employee.â
âNow that Iâm back, I think that title comes back to me,â Toni gestured to herself.
âFuck out of here.â
They both chuckled as they walked to the entrance, the joking continuing between the old friends.
Toni had been at the bar for hours, and like Sean said she quickly got back into the swing of things. When she walked in three minutes late because of her small catch up with him, she was worried Avery was going to wring her neck especially since it was technically her first day. But all he did was yell out, âToni, baby welcome back!â His New York accent prominent.
The Italian man looked mostly the same if not a little gray on the edges of his once all black hair. The last time she saw him he didnât have crinkles near his eyes when he smiled but Toni thought they fit him perfectly. Avery had a small belly now and wore a red dress shirt that was rolled up at the sleeves, showcasing his tattoo of his favorite pinup girl Bettie Page on his forearm. After all these years he still hadnât strayed from the black slacks always saying, âThe color never shows the stains of a bad night.â After introducing Toni to the rest of  her coworkers he went to the backroom to meet with some associates, letting her know he would be back to help out later.
It was ten oâclock and Rihannaâs Work was playing in the bar, making the mass of people sway to the music and talk with drinks in their hands. The crowd seemed to not be getting any smaller and Toni was taking peopleâs drink orders as she was making other customers drinks. She didnât remember it being this busy on just a regular Wednesday night, but she could guess as areas started to get more gentrified the crowds began to change.Â
The hanging lights gave Lux an intimate glow but provided enough light for people to see each other. Stools were lined up in front of the bar, and they were all filled with customers, laughing and drinking, some of them eating onion rings and french fries or whatever other bar snacks that were served. The wooden booths that were along the wall, gave patrons the option to be more personal and away from the crazy that was the bar counter.
âHey Toni, I need a pitcher of Budweiser,â Rosa, her coworker, stood next to her, her voice was slightly raised because she was trying to be heard over the volume of the chatter.
âGotcha babe,â Toni got out the plastic container and put it under the spigot, pulling the lever. As the brownish-gold liquid poured, she looked out into the mob, watching individuals coming in and out of Lux. Sean was vaguely seen from where she was standing, checking ID at the door. Toni stopped the stream of beer and turned to Rosa, handing her the pitcher, âThank you!â The blue-haired woman said with a smile, leaving to go tend to her customer.
Toni was about to put her hand out to stop Rosa before she got too far. Wanting to let her know she was going to take her fifteen-minute break, when she heard, âCan I get a Jack on the rocks?â
Toni frowned, in confusion at hearing the deep voice that had been on her mind for the past several days. Was she thinking about him too much, that she conjured him up somehow? She slowly turned to the individual that never failed to give her goosebumps whenever she laid eyes on him. In his usual calm demeanor, Chris was sitting at the bar, looking at her with a raised brow and smirk playing on his lips.
And he looked good, really fucking good.
He had on a black button-up and a chain around his neck that made the eagle tattoo on his neck stand out on his tan skin. She didnât know if it was possible but he looked even better than when she saw him last.
Fuck me.
Toni bit her lip from her sinful thoughts and got a glass from behind the bar, beginning to make his drink. She glanced up and saw him watching her with his dark eyes, making her downcast her gaze. Not wanting him to notice her slightly shaking hands as she got ice out of the chest, Toni finally spoke, âWell, look who's back.â she said while she poured the liquor into the chilly glass.
Chris looked amused as she put the drink down in front of him and in the process of releasing it his hand came up, holding onto the glass as well, making his fingers come in contact with hers.
âMissed me?â He asked both of their hands still on the drink and unmoving as they checked each other out.
Toni shrugged, âHardly.â
âI think my feelings would be hurt if I actually believed you ma.â
Toni grinned at his words, âHow was work? I didnât think you would be back so soon.â
âCut ties with some of my partners for fucking up the numbers, but shit is all good now.â
Toni went to reply when suddenly Avery came up next to Chris, he put a broad hand on his shoulder, âToni I didnât know you knew Rio.â
She moved her hand away from Chrisâs touch and picked up the rag that was on the counter, cleaning up the sticky bar top. Toni felt like Avery caught her hand in the cookie jar and from his knowing look, it seemed like Avery might have the same sentiment as well.
Toni cleared her throat, âWe just met, actually.â She didnât really understand where the hell âRioâ came from when she had been calling him âChrisâ for the past several weeks.
âWell let me introduce you two then, Rio this is Toni my returning employee and one of the best damn bartenders, Iâve ever had and Toni this is Rio, the co-owner of Lux and your boss,â Avery said making introductory motions between the two.
Toniâs eyes widened and she stopped fake wiping the counter. My boss?! How many businesses did this man have?
âThat shits all semantics Avery, you're the real boss of this place. Iâm just here to be a helping hand,â Chris said, giving Toni a pointed look, showing her that it wasnât as simple as it seemed.
âI suppose.â Avery patted Chrisâs shoulder again with a grin, then turned to Toni once more, âI think itâs time for your fifteen Toni the crew and I can handle it if another wave comes in.â
Toni nodded, âThanks Avery, and nice to meet you, Rio,â she said sickly sweet. Toni left the rag on the counter and squeezed behind Rosa, leaving from behind the bar. She took a look behind her and saw Chris and Avery talking and her usually chill boss didnât seem all that happy. Toni walked outside, seeing Sean sitting on a chair, his fingers moving quickly on his iPhone. He looked over when he saw her walk out, and gave her a smile displaying his pearly whites. âI was right, wasnât I? Shit was like you never left.â
âYes negro, you were right.â Toni said leaning against the window, her feet becoming achy.
âYou can take my seat sis. I need to be standing anyway or Avery will have my ass if he catches me sitting again.â
Toni laughed, âThanks.â
Sean got up and let her sit down, standing in silence. He kept glancing over to her while opening his mouth and closing it like he wanted to ask Toni something. After the third time of this, Toni sighed, âWhat Sean?â
âNothin, NothinâŚâ
She gave him a sour look until he finally broke, âWhatâs with the name change?â Sean put his hands up in mock surrender, âDonât get me wrong Honey and some of your friends called you Toni but youâve never told anyone that they had to do the same.â
Toni went for nonchalance not wanting to alarm him, âI just thought Toni was better, it definitely helps with the awkwardness of people calling me Antonio all the time until I corrected them.â She thought that would be enough for Sean, because what she said made total sense but Toni was very, very wrong.
âBullshit,â Sean said, making her mouth fall open.
âWhat do you mean, bullshit!?â
âYou loved watching people get red in the face when you corrected them, so whatchu sayinâ is bullshit. We havenât seen each other in a minute but I still know you, so give me the real reason before I call Latoya.â
They both knew her mom couldnât hold water sometimes and even if she didnât know the real reason, Toni didnât want Sean talking to her and possibly unearthing secrets that she tried to keep buried for as long as possible. She took in a breath and crossed her arms. At first she didnât know what to say to appease her old friend, as he waited for an explanation but she decided to stick to the truth as close as possible.
âI just wanted a change, I went through a hard time and to completely be rid of it, I made the decision to have people just call me Toni rather than Antonia. It really cemented for me that I was a different person than I was before.â Toni fiddled with a loose string on her jeans, âI mean my parents still call me Antonia and there are certain family members as well that do it too, but in my everyday life, I stick with Toni and the solace it gives me.â
Sean appeared satisfied with her answer, but Toni noticed there was a little squint to his eye like he knew that wasnât the full truth but he let her statement stand.
âSo, Iâm probably hella corny for this and I know you wonât let me live this down but..âSean outstretched his hand, âItâs nice to meet you, Toni.â
His expression was sincere and comical at the same time and it made Toni grin, âNice to meet you too, Sean Puff Daddy Combs.â
Sean sucked his teeth, âHere we go with that Puff Daddy shit.â
A party of people came walking up as they were laughing, making Sean check their IDâs ending their conversation.
For a few minutes, Toni was scrolling through Instagram readying herself to go back inside soon when she saw Chris walk out of the bar. He was standing at the threshold and he seemed to be scanning the parking lot. When it appeared he didnât find what he was looking for he went to turn back around, but he suddenly stopped when he saw Toni sitting in the corner.
Toni waved her hand, âSup, Rio.â
Chris snickered and walked towards her, getting close enough that Toni could smell his cologne. He looked down at her as she looked up at him. âI can start calling you Rio if you prefer. I mean I have my own hang-up with my name, so itâs really fine,â she said.
âNah,â He said, a matter of fact.
He didnât supply any other explanation so Toni gave a soft âOkay,â and leaned back into the chair. Sean gave Chris a head nod as he kept doing his job and telling an apparent drunk couple, that they couldnât come into the bar, much to their dismay.
âI didnât know you had a problem with your name, Iâve been calling you Antonia since we met,â Toni turned her attention back on him, taking notice that he had a blunt in his hand and was lighting it up with a skull covered lighter. His gold rings glimmered from the lights coming from the windows of the bar.
âItâs my own personal shit, but shockingly I donât mind hearing it from you.â
âIs that right?â Chris said. He took a hit and held in the smoke until he released it into the cool air, through his nose and mouth. Toni was mesmerized by the tendrils of smoke, she didnât understand how he made even smoking attractive but everything Chris did turned her on. He offered her the blunt, probably thinkings thatâs why she was staring but Toni declined, not really into smoking much like she used to because of a bad trip she had years ago.
âYou probably think Iâm weird as hell, that I pick and choose what people can address me as.â
âNah I get it, some believe knowing a personâs real name makes you have power over them.â
Toni knitted her brow, âDo you believe that?â she asked him. Chris took another hit and rubbed his beard like he was mulling over the question.
âI tell my associateâs my name is Rio âcause I donât want them to get to close, too familiar. When they start to get too comfortable and start to think we friends or some shit than that interferes with my business and I canât have that.â Chris began playing with his rings like it was a tick of his that he probably never noticed he had, âSo yeah I think having knowledge of someone's name can have some sort of power.â
She sighed and crossed her leg, âI think I agree with you, but if you donât mind me asking, why donât you care about me knowing your real name? It's not like weâre exactly friends.â
âOh shit, we not?â Chris said feigning shock, â Damn mama thatâs fucked up.â
Toni rolled her eyes, âOh please.â
Chris grinned at her and licked his lips, throwing the finished blunt on the floor and ashing it under his black and white Converse. âYouâre different and if you gonna be my girl, I think itâs best if you know who I really am right?â
âYour girl? You havenât even taken me out on a date, so how in the hell am I going to be your girl?â
âRight, Right,â Chris said. His phone began to ring and he took it out of his dark blue jeans and muted it, his eyes never straying from Toni. âSo let me take you out this Friday.â
Toni snorted thinking he was joking but stopped short when she realized that he didnât even crack a smile, âWait youâre serious?â
âDead assâ
Chrisâs phone rang again and this time he did look at it, with an evident scowl. Abruptly he said, âI gotta go Antonia, but Iâll text you the details,â Chris kissed Toniâs cheek and turned to leave, in the process he took his keys out of his pocket.
Toniâs eyes were wide as hell at what just happened. She blinked a couple of times to get out of the fog that took over her mind and noticed that he was almost to his Range Rover.
As he walked further away Toni yelled out, âWait I donât even have your number!â
He took a look over his shoulder, âItâs straight, I got yours!â
She went to nod then paused, âWait, what?!â
Toni heard Chris laugh as he got into his car, turning it on. He sped out of the parking lot, leaving her to watch his taillights disappear into the LA traffic. Sean came over to where she was sitting and heavily sighed fatigue, and annoyance relevant in his form. âGot damn, did you see how fucked up they were? Imma have to tell Avery I need help âcause I canât take IDâs and pat them down while babysitting grown-ass adults. Fuck that shit.â
Toni didnât say anything, her thoughts still on what transpired seconds before. Sean took notice of the silence and softly elbowed his friend, used to her having a sarcastic quip. âYou good? What did I miss?â
Iâm going on date,â Toni said, feeling a glimmer of happiness.
