On This Day In History . 2 September 1192 . The Treaty of Jaffa was signed between king Richard I of England and Saladin, leading to the end of the Third Crusade. . ◼ The Treaty of Jaffa was an agreement during the Crusades. It was signed on 2 September 1192 between the Muslim ruler Saladin & king Richard I of England, shortly after the July–August 1192 Battle of Jaffa. The treaty guaranteed a three-year truce between the two armies. . ◼ The treaty guaranteed safe passage of Christians & Muslims through Palestine whilst also stating that the Christians would hold the coast from Tyre to Jaffa. However Ascalon’s fortifications were to be demolished & the town returned to Saladin. On This Day In History . 3 September 1189 . King Richard I coronation . . Richard was the third of five sons of King Henry II of England & Eleanor of Aquitaine. He was known as Richard Cœur de Lion or Richard the Lionheart because of his reputation as a great military leader & warrior. He was King of England from 1189 - 1199, he was 31 at the time of his coronation. . The Coronation; . ◼ Richard was crowned king in Westminster Abbey. At the coronation he stood before the throne, a man at his peak, over 6 foot tall, ceremoniously disrobed down to his shirt & breeches. Slits were made through his shirt for the anointing process. It was Archbishop Baldwin who conducted the service, he would die the following year while on crusade with Richard. Richard was consecrated on the chest & hands,  then holy oil was dripped on to his head, which was then carefully bound in a chrismale or linen coif. This would remain on the kings head for eight days so not a single drop of this holy oil was lost. . ◼ The king was then dressed in tunic, dalmatic (loose fitting wide-sleeved garment) & the cap of maintenance was pulled over the chrismale. Gold laced sandals were placed on his feet, then came his spurs, sword, stole & mantle. Richard moved to the alter where he promised to uphold the laws of the kingdom (Richard was only in England for about ten months of his ten year reign). . ◼ The king then picked the crown from the altar & passed it to the archbishop. The moment of this new kings crowning had come. Baldwin then placed the crown over the cap of maintenance & chrismale. King Richard I was born . . ◾ Richard was born on 8 September 1157, probably at Beaumont Palace, in Oxford, England, son of King Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine. . ◾ As the third legitimate son of King Henry II, he was not expected to ascend the throne. . ◾ Richard is often depicted as having been the favourite son of his mother. His father was Norman-Angevin and great-grandson of William the Conqueror. . ◾ From an early age he showed significant political and military ability, becoming noted for his chivalry and courage as he fought to control the rebellious nobles of his own territory. . ◾ He was crowned king on 3 September 1189, having ascended to the throne on 6 July 1189. . ◾ He married Berengaria of Navarre in Limassol on 12 May 1191 at the Chapel of St. George. He also ruled as Duke of Normandy, Aquitaine & Gascony, Lord of Cyprus, Count of Poitiers, Anjou, Maine, & Nantes, & was overlord of Brittany at various times during the same period. . By the age of 16, Richard had taken command of his own army. Richard was a central Christian commander during the Third Crusade, leading the campaign after the departure of Philip II of France & achieving considerable victories against his Muslim counterpart, Saladin, although he did not retake Jerusalem from Saladin. . Richard’s new title came at a time of major political change. Shortly afterward, he would be crowned King of England on September 3, 1189, and begin preparations for the Third Crusade. Although much of his reign was spent abroad, his position as Duke of Normandy remained central to his struggle against the French king and the defense of his continental lands.

Richard's adventurous life came to an end in 1199 while besieging Châlus-Chabrol Castle in France. Struck by a crossbow bolt, the wound became infected, and he died several days later. Although he spent remarkably little time in England, his military reputation and enduring legends ensured that the Lionheart became one of the most famous kings in English history.

King Richard I . . 👑 Although Richard I lived up to his ‘lion-hearted’ title and his men fought valiantly, they failed to take Jerusalem. . 👑 During a truce, when some of his crusaders entered Jerusalem, Richard I refused to accompany them, saying that he would not enter as a pilgrim into the city which he could not rescue as a conqueror. . 👑 On his return from the Holy Land, Richard I was shipwrecked off the coast of the Adriatic &, while attempting to travel through Austria in disguise, he was recognised & captured by Duke Leopold, whom he had offended at the siege of Acre. Leopold kept him prisoner at Dürnstein Castle, Austria, before handing him over to Henry VI, the Holy Roman Emperor, who imprisoned him in Trifels Castle & demanded a huge ransom for his release. The ransom was equivalent to more than twice the annual revenues of England. . 👑 Meanwhile, Richard’s brother, Prince John, had joined forces with Philip Augustus, King of France, & they sent a letter to Henry asking him to keep Richard away from England for as long as possible, offering payment to keep Richard imprisoned. Although he was the youngest of Henry II’s sons, Prince John was manoeuvring to gain the crown for himself. . 👑 Prince John's offer was declined & Richard’s ransom was paid by his mother, Eleanor of Aquitaine (who had to pawn the Crown Jewels of England to do so), he was set free. . 👑 Upon Richard’s release, his brother John grovelled & pleaded for forgiveness. Much to the disgust of his nobles, Richard granted clemency & named John heir presumptive. . 👑 Richard I died during the siege of a small castle in the Limousin, having already defeated King Philip of France. On 25 March 1199, Richard was walking around the castle when a fluke long-distance arrow, fired by a young French bowman, pierced his shoulder.
