Despite the rebellions of his sons and the feud with Thomas Beckett, in these matters pointed above, I personally think he was a king who was successful in exercising kingship according to 12th century expectations. At least, in comparison to his sons (Richard I may have been successful as a warrior, but his conquests did not last long) and grandson, Henry managed to centralize monarchy’s power in his hands.
