sickfic prompt 38 âJust let me take care of you why are you so stubborn.â for rhodeytonypepper??
âPep-â
âIâm fine.â
âPepper,â Tony said.Â
âTony,â she replied, matching his tone without looking away from her tablet. âI need to get this done.â
âI can do it for you,â he said. She raised an eyebrow. âSeriously. I will. You need to rest.â
âIâm resting. Iâm on the couch. I have chicken noodle soup on the table beside me and DayQuil running through my system.â She glanced up at him for a moment. âAnd I need to finish this.â
âLet her work, Tones,â Rhodey said from the other side of the couch. He was folding laundry with a fraction of his usual efficiency, and acting like he wasnât having any problems at all. He had a high fever, he was going to have problems, but he shooed Tony away whenever he tried to help.Â
He dropped the washcloth he was folding, bent down to pick it up, and swayed when he sat back up. His eyes unfocused for a moment, and he shook his head slightly, and then kept working. Tony sort of wanted to scream.
He looked back and forth at them, and he knew he looked nervous and clingy, but he couldnât seem to make himself stop. âBut sheâs sick. Youâre sick.â
âWeâre okay. Itâs just a cold,â Rhodey replied. âNot even the worst ones weâve had.â
âYou donât know that yet,â Tony muttered. He put his hands on his hips, thinking, then: âJ, how are their fevers?â
Pepper breathed out through her nose in that way she did when she was annoyed and only sort of trying not to show it.
âMs. Potts has a low-grade fever of a hundred point one. Mr. Rhodes has a fever of a hundred and two.âÂ
âI feel fine,â Rhodey said. His hands were shaking, his grip strength was weak. Why was he still working? Why was Pepper still working? They were sick, they needed to rest to get better and they werenât going to get better if they kept trying to keep busy. They were going to get worse, Pepper had already been sick for three days and Rhodey for two, if they didnât rest-
âThere,â Rhodey said to himself. Oh, good, heâd finished doing the laundry, maybe he would lay down and go to sleep for a bit. Tony stepped forward and picked up the blankets that heâd folded on his first load, ready to put them to use. Rhodey picked up a stack of pants, shifted to the edge of his seat, and eyed Tony warily.
âNo,â Tony said. Were his hands tingling? Why were his hands tingling?
âTony,â Rhodey sighed. Pepper made a vaguely annoyed and agreeing noise.
âYouâre sick,â he said again. âI can put those away.â
âI canât just sit here.â
âWhy not?â
âDo you want help?â Pepper asked, looking over to him. Rhodey opened his mouth to reply, looking like he was going to say yes, and-
âJust let me take care of you! Why are you so stubborn?â Tony burst out. His spouses both paused and looked at him, startled. âGod! And you call me a workaholic, really. Un-fucking-believable.â He dropped the blankets between them with a huff, then stepped back and pointed at Rhodey, who was looking at him with a mixture of alarm and amusement, and he did not appreciate it. He was not in the mood to be laughed at, not for this. âYou! You have a fever of a hundred and two. Youâre acting like youâre not graying out every time that you get up to get the laundry or do the dishes, and I know that you are because the last time you tried to walk through it I saw you almost collide with the kitchen counter. So sit down and stay there. I can do the dishes, I can put the laundry away.â His voice cracked.
â...yeah, okay,â Rhodey said, his amusement gone and concern evident in his expression. He sat back. âRead you loud and clear.â
Tony didnât acknowledge his response. He turned to Pepper. She had turned the tablet off and was watching him with her head cocked to the side and eyebrows knitted together. âAnd you are going to work yourself into an early grave. You got sick in the first place because youâve been working non-stop for three weeks,â he waved a hand, âthank you for that, you are a brilliant CEO and Iâm so glad that youâre running SI, but you arenât going to get better unless you take a break and rest. I know that neither of you like inactivity. I get that, I do, youâre both brilliant and I love you very much and I want you to get better.â He took a step back and crossed his arms tightly. He took a deep breath. âPlease.â
âOh, honey,â Pepper murmured.
âTones,â Rhodey said softly, like he was talking to a spooked animal, which made Tony want to snap at him but he didnât because he was sick, his face was ashy with exhaustion and nausea, probably, and should Tony have yelled at him? Well, he hadnât yelled, he wouldnât do that, but he had been speaking pretty forcefully and what if he was going to stress them both out and theyâd get even more sick, he was going to make it worse and they would take longer to get better and what if-
âHey. Hey, nope, donât check out on us now,â Rhodey said firmly. Tony snapped back to reality, where there wasnât just static and constant, unending regret. âTony.â He pulled a blanket off of the stack and spread it over his lap, and Pepper did the same, still watching him with soft eyes. âSit.âÂ
He blinked again.
âTony,â Pepper murmured. âSit. Just for a second.â
Tony sat. Rhodey turned to him and took his hands in his too-warm ones. Pepper pressed her shoulder against his back and leaned her head on the back of his shoulder. âListen to me. Iâm about to drop a truth bomb on you, okay? You ready?â
âSorry,â Tony said, and he shook his head.Â
âWeâre not upset with you,â Pepper said. âWe needed to hear that, and weâre going to listen,â Tony relaxed a little, relieved, âbut you need to listen to us for a moment, too.â
â...okay,â he said.
Rhodeyâs expression was serious, and concerned, and Tony saw understanding there, too. âHey.â He squeezed his hands. âOut of the three of us, you have the worst immune system.â Pepper nodded against his back. âItâs bad when you get sick. You donât bounce back easily, you always end up bedridden, and you have to be hospitalized more often than not.â He smiled wearily. âBut neither I nor Pepper have reduced lung capacity like you do. Neither of us have a history of getting pneumonia or bronchitis from a cold, or even the flu. Even if itâs bad, we donât get as sick as you do and we will get better. Okay?â
âYou donât get as sick as I do,â Tony repeated, slowly, because he hadnât thought of that at all. Of course they didnât. They were healthy, they could- they could breathe when they got sick. Tony couldnât. Heâd forgotten that that wasnât normal.
Rhodey nodded. Pepper hummed in agreement and rubbed her face against his shoulder like a cat.
âWe understand why youâre scared, and itâs a good reason to be,â she said, âbut weâre gonna be okay.â
âIâm not scared,â he objected, more for show than anything. It was weak. Rhodey rolled his eyes. It made him feel a little better.
âYou are.â Her tone was blunt. âIt makes sense. We donât fault you for it, and we understand why youâre mother-henning us-â
âIâm not-â
âYou are. Itâs okay, we donât really mind it, but you canât get yourself so worked up about this, honey.â She turned to press her chest against his back, and she circled her arms around his waist. Her forehead pressed against the back of his neck, she was warmer than she had been before this, and he made himself take a deep breath. âItâs not healthy. Youâre not going to make us more sick if you sit down and tell us that youâre really worried. Iâm sorry that I didnât notice you were so upset.â
âMe too. Tell us before it gets to this point and you give yourself a minor heart attack,â Rhodey said, and his warm tone didnât match his teasing words. He was still holding his hands. Tony didnât consider pulling away. âOkay?â
Tony ducked his head. âYeah, okay,â he said.Â
âAnd youâre right.â Pepperâs voice was muffled against his back. She sounded tired. âI shouldnât be working, itâs just gonna stress me out more. I have people who can do my job for a couple of days- you might have to do some paperwork.â
âDone,â Tony said. He felt her smile.Â
âI get restless,â Rhodey said, âbut youâre right, I almost passed out last time I got up.â
âDonât do that,â Tony said, a little helplessly. âI can find something easy for you to do, or you can tell me to get you a- a puzzle or a Rubikâs cube or something.â
âA Rubikâs cube,â Rhodey repeated, a smile growing on his stupidly cute face. âBecause Iâm how old, again?â
âOh, shut up, Iâll get a couple of the six-by-six ones and race you.â Rhodeyâs eyes brightened with interest. Nerd.Â
âCould he beat you?â Pepper asked, sounding genuinely curious. Tony paused, considering.
âSay no,â Rhodey said.
âNo,â he repeated obediently. She snorted. Rhodey tilted his chin up in challenge. Tony didnât really know why everyone thought he was the cocky bastard when Rhodey was right there.Â
Tony turned away from him and he slumped against the back of the couch, still smiling, still cocky, but tired. Pepper leaned back to let him move, and then when he was also sitting with his back to the couch, draped herself over his lap. Her head rested on Rhodeyâs thigh, and he threaded his fingers through her hair.
âGot any instructions for me, Mr. Stark?â She asked in a very, very poor imitation of her usual businesslike tone. Her face was fever-flushed. Tony bumped his shoulder into Rhodeyâs with a hum.
âWell, Ms. Potts, I think you should take some time off,â he said, nailing his own usual Iâm the boss tone, thank you very much. âI have other people who can do your job, you know.â
ââre you replacing me, Mr. Stark?â She slurred. He huffed and rubbed at her back. He was going to get them both a cold compress, and some headache medication, because he recognized the tightness around Rhodeyâs eyes and the way that Pepper pressed her temple against his thigh. He pressed his palm to the nape of her neck for a moment to test her fever- a little too warm for comfort in his opinion, and she relaxed a little bit more. Rhodey put his arm around Tonyâs shoulders and leaned against him.
He was going to move. In a little bit. Soon. âCertainly not, Ms. Potts. Youâre irreplaceable.â

I don't know if you've heard it but Third Eye by Florence + the Machine is a Tony song and it is PAINFUL
you are flesh and blood/and you deserve to be loved/and you deserve what you are givenÂ
Rhodey first noticed Tonyâs rather erratic work schedule in the first two weeks of living with him. Tony had actually paid for another dorm room adjacent to theirs for lab space. He spent a lot of time there, more than what usual engineers did.Â
Rhodey would know, because he spends an inordinate amount of time on his projects. But Tony? Tony spends about fourteen hours in the lab at a time, only surfacing for the occasional snack or when Rhodey yells âget out or Iâm force-feeding you tonightâs dinner at the dining center!âÂ
The problem is, Rhodey doesnât know why. Tonyâs proven time and time again that he can pull a design out of his ass in about fifteen minutes for class, so itâs not like he needs to spend fourteen hours in the lab.Â
Itâs when Rhodey goes there that he realizes that Tony is doing about fifteen things every day. Heâs drafting new inventions, sending out patents, and working on things for Stark Industries.Â
âThis is what youâre doing all day?â Rhodey asks.Â
Tony nods.Â
âGotta get ahead of demand when I turn twenty-one,â Tony says, smile dim.Â
Rhodey knows heâs lying. Knows that this isnât Tony working as a means of âsaving upâ designs. Heâs seen Tonyâs face and how stressed it is when he gets off the phone with Obie.Â
âYou are coming with me,â Rhodey announces, dragging Tony out of the lab.Â
After that, Rhodey moderates lab hours because a.) Tony shouldnât be working this long in college and b.) Rhodey does what he wants.Â
This isnât the perfect solution. Tony still stresses about not living up to expectations, having Obie give him the âdonât you want to be better than Howard?â talk that he dreads.Â
âFuck him,â Rhodey says with a snort. âYou put out two new designs on pistols and a better technology for computer processing. What did Howard do in six months? Make a handgun? Okay.âÂ
Obie actually lays off of him.Â
Itâs not the be-all solution, but itâs close. Tony smiles at Rhodey when they go grocery shopping and Rhodey is complaining about his brand of coffee raising in price by fifty cents.Â
âWho does that?â he whines.Â
âDonât worry about it, sugar plum,â Tony says, deftly putting it in the cart. âYou know itâs too good to pass up.âÂ
âUnfortunately.âÂ
Rhodey goes away to the army.Â
Slowly, slowly but surely, Obie breaks Tony back down to being guilt-ridden by not being as productive.Â
Pepper walks--scratch that--she storms into his life as his PA and demands he goes home.Â
âI donât go home until you go home because I like to be on top of things, but I swear to god if you donât go home at a reasonable time Iâm carrying you out myself. This is ridiculous, you need rest at some point.âÂ
âIâll rest when Iâm dead.âÂ
âWell I have a list of people to haunt, so Iâm making you rest now.âÂ
Tonyâs interested in who Pepper haunts. She tells him that when he actually goes home and rests, sheâll tell him.Â
She is firm on her plan for Tony to go home at scheduled times.Â
She crosses her arms when Obadiah comes into her office and asks that she âeasesâ her restrictions.Â
âTony needs to be as creative as possible,â he says. âI can arrange for someone else to stay late hours.âÂ
âIf he stays up like he does, youâll have your favorite inventor dead by thirty,â Pepper says flatly. âAnd heâs twenty-seven right now, so imagine when heâs gone and thereâs no one else like him to replace him.âÂ
He lays off, and never really likes her after that. But he gives her the creeps and she doesnât like how he treats Tony like a robot, so thatâs fine with her.Â
And then, of course, the crowning moment:Â
Realizing all of this was for terrible reasons and heâs been killing people.Â
Tony remembers when he was a small child, Mama used to take him to church and to confession. She would be talking quietly and telling him that he would need to confess and atone for his sins.Â
The same concept can be applied without religion.Â
Still, he remembers the dark red of the curtain, the gold etching on the statues he used to stare at while his mother spoke softly.Â
âThrow a little hot red in there, J.âÂ
He stays in a metal suit and he destroys his weapons in the hands of people and he feels good.Â
But he has to keep doing it. There are so many wrongs. So many things he has to fix.Â
Tony Stark can do some of it. But Tony Stark is...Tony Stark.Â
Iron Man can be better, is better. He much prefers looking at his reflection and seeing a mask reflect. Better not to see who you are and better to see who you could be. Who you should attain to be.Â
(He doesnât tell Rhodey or Pepper that, heâs not crazy. For some reason, they seem to think heâs himself and thatâs the best thing possible. Heâs tried arguing it, but gets nowhere.)Â
Iron Man is out all the time. Late at night, early in the morning.Â
People donât see the man behind the mask blinking, struggling to wake up. But he has to. He has to do everything, or it wonât--it wonât matter.Â
Rhodey and Pepper meet him at the launch pad. Rhodey holds out a hand.Â
âShower. I got you food. Then we are all sleeping, because you need it.âÂ
âIâm fine,â Tony says.Â
âNo, youâre not,â Pepper argues. âAnd you can tell me that all you want but a Fine, Normal Person wouldnât make a flight to Syria in a suit of armor. So.âÂ
âNot every Fine, Normal Person has a flying suit of armor,â Tony argues.Â
âNo Fine, Normal Person would make a suit of armor,â Rhodey retorts. âGet going, man. I convinced Pepper to let us watch Seinfeld.âÂ
Tony showers. Gets on comfy clothes that arenât the ones from the day(s) before.Â
Pepper and Rhodey make a space for him in between them on the bed. Pepper has given up her favorite pillow.Â
âCome on honey,â she murmurs. âRhodey has your plate. Letâs relax for a little bit. You deserve it. Youâre off saving the world.âÂ
Tony doesnât believe that.
But itâs hard to refute it when youâre sleepy and have two of your favorite people giving you love.Â
More title asks bc im bored : 'everytime I turn around you disappear'//'that's the kind of love (I've been dreaming of)'//If Tomorrow Never Comes (basically kal ho na ho but im shit at translation)// I'll send more when i think of them zkzkzk
oof okay strap in
//
everytime i turn around you disappear:Â (this is super long so ive broken it up into paras)
so its spooky season right??
so an au where tony âdiesâ after im3 and leaves his assets to the Avengers Initiative. After the events of winter soldier, Pepper divides his assets amongst the team; since the will explicitly states âThe Avengers Initiativeâ and not the Government.Â
Bucky doesnât run away at the end of the film; and instead Sam and Bucky hole up in the Malibu mansion while Steve work with Nat and Pepper to legally exonerate his name. (thereâs a side pepperstevenat here btw). JARVIS is alive ofc, and one of the things that helps Bucky out of his disassociate states is listening to stories about Tony.Â
This is cuz, initially Bucky still associates Tony to Howard, and its a sense of familiarity- but slowly Bucky starts falling for Tony; and the idea of Tony starts pulling Bucky back into normalcy. Sam warns him that its no good for his psyche to fall in love with a ghost; but is otherwise understanding and supportive.
And the more Bucky learns about Tony, the more he gets obsessed with Tony. He learns everything there is to know about Tony- and he starts noticing some gaps in the story; things that donât add up. Like the way JARVIS seems to go offline for a couple of seconds every couple of days, even though Steve swears that Tonyâs tech was the best of the best. The way that Pepper always seems to be, distant and worried about something. The fact that Rhodey didnât show up for his own bestfriendâs wedding.
He does some investigating; and basically he figures out that Tony isnât dead- but that Aldrich somehow survived and kidnapped Tony while Tony was under anaesthesia from the surgical suite. Pepper had him declared him so she could get access to his funds, and Rhodey and Pepper have been looking for him ever since.Â
Eventually, Tony breaks himself out- because essentially he wouldâve been Aldrichâs guinea pig which had the bonus of being continuously pumped with variations of EXTREMIS that, once stabilised, just made him strong enough to escape
But Tonyâs been under capture for almost 2 years now; and the only people he responds to are Rhodey, Pepper and surprisingly- Bucky. (it later comes out that those times that JARVIS went offline was Tony hacking into his systems through EXTREMIS and trying to send a signal but he was never strong enough to keep the signal. but he was there long enough to catch glimpses of Buckyâs adoration of him)
And thereâs a lot of emotional healing but eventually buckytony happens and rhodey&tony are besties yay
/
thats the kind of love (ive been dreaming of): this would be a rhodeytony fic; probably just pure fluff- maybe mit era?? or pre im1 era?? or just post im2
/
kal ho naa ho:Â
i would straight up write kal ho na ho. with tony as shah rukh, rhodey as saif and pepper as preity; complete with the heart condition- kanta bhai thinking that rhodey and tony were gay for each other and tonyâs undying love for pepper. i would also write a healthy amount of rhodeypepper because i actually really like that ship.Â
or actually, i could even do stevetonybucky with steve as shah rukh; bucky as saif and tony as preity. i could see that happen as well.Â
idk im conflicted now but basically i would just straight up write kal ho na ho (maybe i SHOULD damn)
//
send me titles and iâll tell you what fic i would write for it!

yknow what pisses me off? whenever a fic/post says something like bruce or peter are the only people who are capable of keeping up with Tony LIKE ????
Rhodey literally went to MIT at the same time as tony & has a master's degree in some form of aeronautical engineering and is a decorated USAF Colonel
Pepper is extremely business savvy and was literally running SI even before she became CEO
Tony's a genius yes but that doesn't mean his oldest friends aren't extremely smart too and it angers me that their intelligence gets overshadowed most of the time in canon & fanon
A very rough sketch (of something I probably wonât finish because Iâm lazy) of my huldra!Tony and Pepper and Rhodey hugging the him, assuring him heâs loved. That he matters.
Also, this is dedicated (read: a birthday gift) to the amazing @mr-starkasm ! Because youâre amazing and I know you love a happy Tony :D
