Punk punk punk. Pussy Riot popped into my mind fairly quickly when thinking of propaganda. Powerful counter to the propaganda of the oligarchs. Probably more of a pop culture pick but, as with much of punk rock, the energy can be more memorable than the words.

Chronology: Time in a Bottle by Jim Croce

I sat with “chronology” for a bit and nothing but “time” came to mind. And if you want a song about time it is hard to find a better one than this one.

She is right. Five years? I wish.

Parenthood shows you the things you are, and the things you aren’t, so clearly. First, it was that little body, propped against me in the rocking chair while I read her a story. As with so many things, I far outpaced skill with enthusiasm. But 100 percent unvarnished daddy goes a long way with a little girl.

Then it was Mrs. JBF, who is a superb reader, reading books for bigger kids to her. Harry Potter, but only through Book 4 (too scary after that), and Neil Gaiman, and some others I lost track of. It didn’t matter what it was. Mrs. JBF is a superb mimic with a laugh like music, and I just liked hearing the voices of the characters come to life. I miss that.

Then she was reading to herself, and then putting herself to bed. And there went that. One door closes, another opens. Wistful. These days I might get a pre-bed hug if I’m lucky, or a pat on the head. And who knows what comes with high school.

My wife tells a story about when 13 was in first grade, and she used to walk her into school. All cute little clothes and giant backpack. First, it was all the way to the classroom, then just to the lobby, then just leave me in front. One day, she just wanted to be left off at the side steps and walk up the hill herself. And as my wife tells it, “I looked up and she was gone.” Next chapter of life, please.

Carry them carefully from the delivery room to the nursery. They’re leaving you from that moment on. Give them every tool you can, make every memory you can, let them go.
