The Fall of Évora: A Portuguese Victory in the Restoration War
On June 24, 1663, the Spanish garrison of Évora surrendered after the Portuguese victory at the Battle of Ameixial, a decisive clash during the Portuguese Restoration War (1640–1668). The defeat of Spanish forces weakened their campaign in Portugal and marked a major triumph for the Portuguese monarchy’s struggle to regain independence after decades of Iberian Union.
The Portuguese army, led by commanders including António LuÃs de Meneses, 1st Marquess of Marialva, and Sancho Manoel de Vilhena, successfully defeated the invading Spanish army at Ameixial on June 8, 1663. With Spanish forces unable to relieve Évora, the city’s defenders were forced to capitulate.
The surrender of Évora strengthened Portugal’s position and became one of the most important victories of the Restoration War, helping secure Portuguese independence and shaping the future of the nation.
