Another rising interpretation of Nancy that I am currently hating is that she's only interested in romance insofar as the thrill of the chase/the satisfaction of "getting the guy," but once she's actually in a relationship she immediately loses interest in her partner and moves on to the next. I just don't think there's enough of a basis for that interpretation in either of the relationships she has on the show? While yes, she is initially drawn to Jonathan while still in another relationship, once she's made the decision to get back together with Steve at the end of season one, she does seem to commit to trying to make it work. She puts a lot of effort into their relationship. She plans the couple costumes for halloween. She helps him with his college essays/plans for the future. She opens up to him enough about Barb to at least try leaning on him for support by asking him accompany her to dinners with Barb's parents, etc. It's not a totally surface level relationship, and they do seem to have good times within that relationship. When things ultimately don't work out between them, it's not for lack of trying on her part. It's because trying hard to love Steve isn't the same as actually loving Steve, and no amount of wanting to make the relationship can force it into working. There are just too many differences between them, and she loves somebody else.
Cut to jancy. In s3 they are glued at the hip. In s4, Nancy is so wound tight by Jonathan's physical absence and emotional distance that she drives herself crazy thinking he's moved on/likes somebody else, even though anyone who knows Jonathan knows that's completely ridiculous. She has big plans for a future with him that involve going to college together. The problems in their relationship have very little to do with Nancy blanket being "bad at long-term relationships," or being uninterested in Jonathan now that she has him, or turning to chasing someone else. I think the only time this argument makes any sense is in s5, when yes, okay, she does seem less invested in the issues going on in her relationship and in trying to fix them than Jonathan does. Her basically ignoring having any real conversation with him for all of vol 1 really bothered me, but that's largely because of how much it doesn't mesh with anything we've seen from her in the relationship up until that point. And even so, despite the emotional distance, she still is physically glued to Jonathan all season. The unproposal-finale is evidence alone to me that she is still very much invested in Jonathan as a person and as a romantic partner. She loves him. That's not someone who's lost interest or is noncommittal or who is already in the pursuit of someone else for the thrill of it.
