One health message that has impacted me lately is to eat healthy. I think the way they got to me was using simple facts and showing me hoe bad eating unhealthy is for more. Another way is showing me how easy it is to actually eat healthy and cheaper too.
Another thing that has really impacted me, is to make sure I exercise and stay fit. Recent messages are make sure you are active at least 60 minutes a day to be healthy. I do notice when I am being physically active my body feels better and so does my mind.
Both of these have really helped me improve my health and made me feel a lot better as a person. I have felt better both mentally and physically which are direct results from eating healthier and being physically active.Â

I’ve seen this video a few times on Facebook and it made me re-evaluate what I’ve been eating. I’m not overweight, but I’m not the healthiest eater as well. There are times where I’d go on late night food runs with my friends and then immediately sleep after.  I know that the way I’ve been eating isn’t going to fare well with my body in a few years so I want to be more cautious about it down the road. This would also apply to my future children. I want them to have a healthy diet growing up so that they don’t have any complications. The source is a children’s healthcare group which wants to raise awareness on child obesity. In the video, a link is provided for their website. They seem very credible because of all the information they provide, as well as having the option to directly ask doctors questions concerning the topic.
Every time I see a distracted driving ad, it always shakes me. I am a culprit of doing this bad behavior, but I’ve been improving. My girlfriend does it a lot however, and that frightens me. I try everything in my power to prevent her from using her phone while she drives because I don’t want something to happen to her. The source is AT&T, which provides cell service. Even though it is more about human error, it shows that they care about the dangers that come from the products they sell. They also started a campaign called “It Can Wait” to address the issue.

One health communication message that has impacted my life and even converted me to never eating pork or dark meat is the message in a combination of many documentaries on the meat industry. It all started with the unhealthiness of Supersize Me, which wasn’t particularly focused on the meat industry but just gross food in general. Since that movie I have watched multiple other documentaries highlighting the nasty environment and torture of the cows, and I am grossed out by it. I am in the process of trying to completely be vegetarian, which is difficult for other reasons, but that decision has been influenced significantly by this movie, among other sources of messages. The messages in the movies particularly impacted me because it targeted my sensitivity with blood and gory images, suffering of animals, and weight gain or low quality of health. Another health communication message that has impacted me is the no-smoking ads that have been on t.v., particularly the ones with the people having holes in their throat. It impacted me also because of the nastiness of it and the bluntness. It also shows older women describing how they are going to make you look worse and age faster, and a 21 year old woman definitely sees that as a reason to not smoke.

McGuire’s psychology-based model:
Advise: Provides facts on how sugar is a common contributor to obesity and diabetes.
Activate: Is persuasive in a way that it demonstrates an everyday drink, such as soda, and how we are letting this occur to our own health.Â
Announce: It provides a website and the campaign where we can find more information regarding this problem.Â
Advocate: n/a
Kotler’s business-based:
Price: People are not aware of what they are consuming, therefore contributing to their own health.Â
Place: Possible place could be a nutritionist, a health center. or even at school.Â
Promotion: promoted as a poster ad, or it could even be an ad for a website. To promote healthy eating behaviors.Â
Product: Obesity and Diabetes
Position: To change your habits and start thinking about your healthÂ
McGuire’s psychology-based model:
Advise: Provides a quick fact on how cavities may cause heart attacks
Activate: To promote dentist visits and to get checked.Â
Announce: Provides a campaign in which focuses and possible, provides more information regarding this health issue.Â
Advocate: Provides a direct statement in which it provides a point of view or direction in order for someone to act upon themselves and go to the dentist.Â
Kotler’s business-based:
Price: Going to the dentist, can prevent cavities and prevent heart attacks.Â
Place: Ad, poster, billboard.Â
Promotion: Get checked and visit the dentist frequently. Oral health is extremely important. Promotion can be set up at a dentist office.Â
Product: Oral HealthÂ
Position: Going to the dentist, can decrease cavities and cardiovascular health.Â
OVERALL, in my opinion I believe if we will be evaluating ads, commercials, posters, etc I would recommend utilizing the McGuire’s psychology-based model. It helps you to real think and evaluate an ad way further than the Kotler’s business-based. Moreover, in regards to health topics such as prevention, promotion, or awareness, it is important to identify and come out with ideas on how we will advise our audience, how we are going to persuade them or even how we are going to deliver the information. The McGuire’s psychology-based model provides a deeper understanding and form of evaluating and breaking it into key components on how this message was successfully delivered.Â

Kotler’s 5 P’s
Product - In this first image the product is sugary beverages
Price -  The price would be your health by “putting on the pounds”
Place - In this case it would be temporal as in the person’s life/health
Promotion - Audience is most likely adults because they are usually the one’s that worry about health issues and weight. However, the bright colors could grab the attention of children prompting them to ask their parents what the message is.
Position - This could be positioned in health magazines, within grocery stores, anywhere sugary drinks might be bought or advertised.
For McGuire’s perspectives it seems as though the following objectives could be combined to represent this image.
Announce - This image is announcing the need to replace sugary drinks with healthier alternatives.
Advise - It’s indirectly saying that sugary drinks are unhealthy by asking the question “Are you pouring on the pounds?”.
Activate - They are trying to persuade the audience to replace sugary drinks with healthier alternatives.
By comparison I think Kotler’s 5 P’s are more clearly outlined than McGuire’s objectives. In this instance Kotler’s P’s explain more aspects about the campaign than McGuire’s objectives. Â
Kotler’s 5 P’s
Product - In this second image the product is chest pain or tightness in the chest signaling a heart attack.
Price - The price of not going to a doctor or calling emergency medical services the moment you feel these symptoms could result in death.
Place - The place in this image is the person’s body, their chest, their own health.
Promotion - The audience is older men doubting the need for medical care.
Position - This image could be placed in men’s magazine’s or a billboard. This is not an American ad (because of the EMS number being 999) therefore it should be placed in the country of origin.
McGuire’s Objectives
Announce - This image is announcing the need to call emergency medical services when you feel chest pain or a tightness in the chest.
Advise - This image is advising older men to call emergency medical services when they feel chest pain or a tightness in their chest.
Activate - This image is trying to persuade older men to not doubt themselves and get them to call emergency medical services when they feel chest pain or a tightness in their chest.
Advocate - While most would not think this has an advocate component, I do. Many men do not go to the doctor, this is a real problem for men’s health because they usually end up with diseases that could have been avoided. I feel like this ad could also be calling men to advocate for their own health.
For this second image, I believe that McGuire’s objectives did a better job explaining the health ad than Kotler’s 5 P’s. I think it has something to do with the fact that the image spoke for itself.

Health Communication Piece #1- In this example of Let's Act Against AIDS together (http://www.cdc.gov/actagainstaids/campaigns/lsht/index.html), I think that McGuire's perspective is a more  clear and useful explanatory model because Kotler's is more business-minded. Mcguire's perspective shows the advocacy and announcement clearly, which is part of that specific health communication perspective, whereas Kotler's P's are hard to pinpoint logically on this example. Health Communication Piece #2- In this example of Prevention is Care (http://www.cdc.gov/actagainstaids/campaigns/pic/materials/index.html), I think Kotler's perspective is a more clear and useful explanatory model because in my opinion this campaign is more business focused. It is aimed specifically at the providers in healthcare and represents the 4 P's (Price, Product, Place, and Promotion),more clearly to me than McGuire's A's, in order to communicate to their audience.

The following video is from Stop Bullying Speak Up Campaign conducted by Cartoon Network, a well known channel for children and teenagers. This campaign has a clear segmentation which is towards teenagers within a middle school or high school setting. It has the right channel to promote it with and even though it might be to childish, it presents the message through a catchy “rap song” followed by an act that presents a common example of bullying and how you can speak up! They obviously knew how they could present this issue and there’s no perfect way then through a song. If it was towards adults, then maybe the issue might be presented much differently.Â
On the other hand, this ad has a more dubious segmentation and might be unclear who the target audience is. The message is the same but we do not evidently know who is this aimed for, for example demographics, populations, and so forth. It has a vague scenario and it can or may not attract a significant number of people to promote awareness of the issue and in addition, promote the desired behavior. Â
