These grants are applied for and usually run a few years before needing to be renewed. So these research opportunities will die and nobody will notice. That's what Reagan did with AIDS funding. For five years he cut medical research -- not just for AIDS but for everything -- to the absolute bone. Investigation stopped. Scientists walked away from their labs. And the Republicans ran around saying they were able to cut "$100M from the federal budget and nothing happened." It was proof of how penny-conscious they were and how the Dems had been lying all long. Five fucking years.
