I have recently finished playing Devil May Cry 3

This game rules. Everyone is everyone's narrative parallel/foil. A lady shoots a guy with a rocket launcher and he rides the rocket like a skateboard. It's mind-numbingly difficult. It has the most awesomesauce opening sequence of all time that shoots the moon like a thousand times. Every time you think it's about to become cringy, it commits so hard that it loops back around to being awesome. They have themes On Purpose. Vergil is finally a character who exists, the world will never be the same. Dante is wearing a coat with no shirt under it for almost the entire game. Dante says cool one-liners and attack enemies with a guitar. Dante cries at the loss of his brother, even though he spent the entire game trying to stop him. Lady cries at the loss of her father, even though she spent the entire game trying to stop him. Vergil has spent so long trying to become his father, yet in the end he has become his antithesis. Dante has spent so long resenting his father, yet in the end he has become the inheritor of his legacy. Dante reaches terminal velocity and gets eaten by a flying whale. Lady has like 3 different characters arcs and they all work. Everyone besides Lady is making jokes throughout the whole experience. The game thinks it's the coolest shit ever and it's right. Vergil and Dante's souls are at war but they still love each other so much. Dante tries to save Vergil and Vergil rejects any aid, instead choosing to fall to hell where we know he will undergo unfathomable torment. Vergil instinctually reaches for the amulet instead of the sword, signifying like a bajillion things but the two that immediately came to mind were him clinging on to his humanity and him viscerally needing a piece of his mother with him. Dante keeps the bloodstained glove Vergil sliced through. The villain is an evil human instead of a demon, emphasizing Lady's final lines that there are humans worse than any devil and devils who are capable of nobility. The good deeds and sins of the father aren't yours, but you must take responsibility for them regardless. Outside of 'Father', Vergil calls Sparda 'Daddy' and Dante calls Sparda 'Pop'.

The foils of all time. I love how they slowly grow to understand how similar they are #and in the end form a bond of genuine respect which we know will eventually become a friendship.#this game is driving me insane #it's a good thing this version of Vergil didn't know about Nero because he would be a TERRIBLE father if he chose to be one at all.

Tending to the land 🧡

#literally the only thing on my to-do list this morning besides slowly heading towards the mountains where I’ll be teaching this weekend #normally I pick up trash as a way to introduce myself to the land #but I wasn’t feeling great last night and I already have a relationship with this land #I slowly wandered and admired tracks and birds and noted where the trash was to return in the morning for it #I picked up probably 8 handfuls of glass #and filled an entire trash bag with other forms of trash #its amazing what a difference one person can make in an hour #and I know more people will choose to litter #but I hope its less enticing when there’s no other litter around #and I hope people are able to fall in love with this place as it is and enjoy it without litter #and most importantly I do feel it’s what I can gift to this land in return for being able to spend time here #I would say it’s what I owe but it feels more like an honor and just what needs to be done #reciprocity and all that #and I found kangaroo rat and lizard tracks winding through the broken glass #every little bit makes a difference to them #I will say that there are definitely times I visit places and am unable to pick up much trash #and I prioritize the things that will be most negatively impactful to wildlife (fishing line and hooks are ones I will ALWAYS pick up)#just do what you can when you can #mousemumbles

To be honest, for me at least, the battle in s2 at camp felt...unearned? Like, in the regard that, in the books, camp had never been hit with a full-blown battle until botl and it's a big deal because it fully cements the reality for those who live there. The reality that the war was, not only, at their doorstep but that it couldn't be ignored. It works because there was a buildup over the course of the books prior. It works because we get to see interactions between the characters, whether main or side, outside of a book and a half. We got to see how the world of CHB worked, and how botl and, eventually, tlo shook it to its core. In the show, we haven't even reached that part and already camp is being invaded on a large scale, by other campers, a lot of whom are either thrown in as place holders for existing side characters, or ones who were shown, but still lacked development. It's supposed to be a very emotional battle, charged with a lot of energy, and, to its credit, it kind of is, but still falls flat due to the things I mentioned. Like why was there a need for the battle so early on?

#pjotv crit #percy jackson #and then the fact that percy is automatically placed in a leadership role but it feels so odd and (lowkey) missplaced bc there still needs #to build up there and for a reason he hasn't even been in camp long enough to truly form a deeper bond with it like he would in botl & tlo #like why pacing/build up is important #like even with these characters having trained at camp most of them were still pretty young (#eg. percy & annabeth & even clarisse) and even with all the quest they went on the gravity of their situation wasn't fully hitting them #until botl (heck even ttc did that with the realization they can die being laid out before them) which then also added the elements of more #betrayals as more campers who were once friends and/or siblings were defecting and then turned up to fight against their loved ones #an emotional moment that worked bc again we got to see moments or even glimpses of these characters & their relationships #just camp life in general #like for as much as this show is advertised as being able to show/expand on things the books didn't it sure does miss vital plot points #idk could just be me tho but whatever #like i just liked how these kids who fought monsters and went on these quests felt bigger than what they were probably on a naive childish #mindset that they could take on anything (or slowly as a way to cope following ttc) only to be hit in the face with the realization of their #own vulnerability and morality especially given that at a literal WAR hit their home and would return that's a big thing #you can feel on top of the world or like the baddest person out there but going through and living through a war can alter your perception #rr crit #anti rr #bc ill make sure to give this man his lashing whenever i can

another thing I’m still chewing on is the first time caleb talked to robbie early in the season and we learn robbie has tried to see not one but two therapists and it didn’t work out. this is not a man who’s coping well at all but he’s tried to get better. and there is nothing more demoralizing than finally biting the bullet and asking for help only for it to not help at all

#the pitt #mandatory robbie is deeply flawed disclaimer here #but god for someone who has been white knuckling through it for decades slowly losing any outside support #and suddenly losing inside support with adamson and his deteriorating relationships with langdon and dana etc #finally submitting and looking for a more conventional form of support and it not fucking helping is devastating #like yes a lot of people don’t click with their first therapist #a lot of people expect therapy to fix them in like three sessions and that’s not realistic #a lot of doctors make terrible patients #but this man waited until he was literally on the roof to be talked into getting help #and it didn’t help. now he’s stuck wondering if he waited too late or if he was ever fixable at all #that’s so fucking bleak. and say what you want about noahs writing and acting choices but that man can turn on a sad face so fast

[Gwaine is waiting for Merlin in Gaius’s chambers.] Merlin: I’m busy. Gwaine: Doing what? Merlin: What do you think? RW: So Gwaine wasn’t in this, uh, initially? Not in this scene? JJ: Well, there was a scene that was in, um, the armoury, from what I remember. RW: Yeah. JJ: And, um…Merlin got quite angry that Arthur wasn’t doing anything and was uncharacteristically rude, in fact, and was quite bolshie. And I think that is what motivates, uh, Gwaine to come and offer to help out. RW: Yeah. JJ: And so that wasn’t there for Gwaine. And in the end, the scene really wasn’t…wasn’t necessary. It didn’t take us anywhere. This scene’s a lovely scene because it’s a relationship. We know that they have a close relationship. RW: That they’re close, yeah. [Agravaine watches Gwaine and Merlin ride off together.] JJ: Yeah, and you instinctively understand why Gwaine has gone there to help out his friend and, um, Merlin, feeling the whole world’s against him…rejects this. Um, but then, slowly, they form a partnership and um…which is, uh, going to drive us towards, uh, rescuing [Gaius].
