Regular verbs (verbos regulares)

In Spanish there are three groups of verbs.

1st group:

Verbs ending in -ar

Examples: hablar (to speak), tomar (to take), cantar (to sing)

Conjugation:

Hablar

Yo hablo

Tú hablas

Él, ella habla

Nosotros hablamos

Vosotros habláis

Ellos, ellas hablan

2nd group:

Verbs ending in -er

Examples: beber (to drink), vender (to sell), leer (to read)

Conjugation:

Beber

Yo bebo

Tú bebes

Él, ella bebe

Nosotros bebemos

Vosotros bebéis

Ellos, ellas beben

3rd group:

Verbs ending in -ir

Examples: vivir (to live), abrir (to open), consumir (to consume)

Conjugation:

Vivir

Yo vivo

Tú vives

Él, ella vive

Nosotros vivimos

Vosotros vivís

Ellos, ellas viven

Similarly to ‘er’ verbs, you have to conjugate ‘ir’ verbs when speaking with pronouns...

choisir - to choose

step one. remove the ending (ir) and replace with the correct ending depending on the pronoun you’re using...

step two. understand there are exceptions like with the verb partir

je choisis | -is | I choose, I am choosing

tu choisis | -is | you choose, you are choosing

il choisit | -it | he chooses, he is choosing

elle choisit | -it | she chooses, she is choosing

on choisit | -it | one chooses, one is choosing

nous choisissons | -isissons | we choose, we are choosing

vous choisissez | -isissez | you (pluriel) choose, you are choosing

ils choisissent | -isissent | they (m) choose, they are choosing

elles choisissent | -isissent | they (f) choose, they are choosing

In this lesson we will look at the regular verbs of type 2 and how it conjugates in present and past tense. Remember that the conjugation of a verb is the same across all pronouns. Regular verbs type 2

Note: regular verbs of type 2 replaces the “e” at the end of the word with “te” in past tense. E.g. “spise” becomes “spiste” and not “spisete”!

The formula for present tense is:

(pronoun) + (verb) + r          e.g.          jeg spiser

The formula for past tense is:

(pronoun) + (verb) - e + te          e.g.          hun hørte

Example sentences

Hun spiser et æble = She eats an apple

Jeg spiste en bagel = I ate a bagel

De hører ham = They hear him

Hvad hørte du? = What did you hear?

Jeg bruger størrelse 9 = I use size 9

I brugte det hele = You used it all

Hvem taber spillet? = Who loses the game?

De tabte til modstanderen = They lost to the opponent

Han køber en ny trøje = He buys a new shirt

Du købte den forkerte bog = You bought the wrong book

Regular verbs type 1

Note: “at lege” and “at spille” both means “to play”. The difference is that “at lege” is the sort of playing that kids do (e.g. playing with toys) and “at spille” is the act of playing a game (e.g. playing football, playing a video game, playing a boardgame).

The formula for present tense is:

(pronoun) + (verb) + r          e.g.          jeg arbejder

The formula for past tense is:

(pronoun) + (verb) + de          e.g.          hun cyklede

Example sentences

Jeg arbejder hver dag = I work every day

Han arbejdede i går = He worked yesterday

Hvad laver du? = What are you doing? or What are you up to?

Jeg laver en smoothie = I am making a smoothie

De cykler til stranden = They are biking to the beach

Cykler du i morgen? = Are you biking tomorrow?

Vi cyklede i skole = We rode our bikes to school or We were biking to school

Børnene leger udenfor = The kids are playing outside

Hun legede med hans følelser = She played with his feelings (here “at lege” is used, since playing with someone's feeling is considered a childish behaviour)

Vi spiller et spil = We are playing a game

Jeg spillede Tetris = I played Tetris

Spiller du poker? = Do you play poker?

What is Preterite?

The preterite tense is used to describe actions completed at a point in the past 

_ar verbs:

Yo nade

Tu nadaste

el/ella nado

nos. nadamos

vos. nadasteis

ellos nadaron

_er verbs:

Yo comi

Tu comiste 

el/ella comio

nos. comimos 

vos. comisteis 

ellos comieron 

note: 

verbs with the ending er and ir conjugate the same.
