Claire glances up from the grave she’s digging up, wiping the sweat off her forehead with her sleeve. Her expression turns slightly puzzled, brow furrowed in thought.  

“Y’know, I always wondered why people say that. It’s almost dawn, and now it’s gettin’ lighter.”

Mae snorts out a laugh as she closes up her water bottle before grabbing up her own shovel once more.

Mae, being the mature woman that she was, nearly whined at Claire’s answer. But...she could understand the lack of appeal, all things considered. Especially since there was still blood all over her.

“Claire this ‘s the third time this week that we’ve played the ‘Where are we gonna eat’ game.” Mae’s voice teetered on the edge of exasperation as she tucked a pen behind her ear and looked towards her cousin.

The same cousin who was practically wiggling in place and looking decidedly energetic, all things considered. “I know!”

“……Then why do you look so happy?”

“Because I have a solution to that.” Without any further prompting she took a slightly battered See and Say from behind her back. Where the animals had been, she had taken post-its and written out the names of nearby food joints.

For a long moment Mae was silent. Then, with a slightly amused look she rose from her spot and pulled down the lever.

Do you hear the frog? A mechanical ribbit groaned from the toy. 

“I just miss making mixtapes. I had that boombox and as soon as my song would come on the radio I’d rush to record it… good times.”
