A Marshmallow or Two
{Continued from here.}
âYou do have a choice. I actually had the foresight to pick up two varieties this time. Which would you prefer?â
The Leap
lonelysoldierkazara:Â
She sensed them too late.Â
Focused on Sumner, she missed the telltale whisper of clothes when their hidden attackers struck. No footsteps, so no shoes. Smart. That was the last thought that went through her head before her world faded away.Â
Her mouth tasted like cotton. Like waking up on a summer morning when the AC leeched all moisture from the air of her bedroom. But this wasnât her bedroom. This wasnât any part of her suite back home and she knew that without even opening her eyes. She didnât need to see where she was to know: they were Outside.
He felt a bit like he was stuck in something viscous. Every limb felt as if it were weighted down. It wasnât a feeling he could ever say he was a fan of. After tamping down the panic that tried to rise, Sumner simply stayed prone to listen. Bird songs, wind, and a the sound of drizzling rain. But no cars, lorries, or any sort of human presence.Â
âWell...Weâre not in civilian territory.â A long sigh escaped him as he finally opened his eyes. âKazara? Are you all right?â
The Leap
lonelysoldierkazara:Â
A soldier-in-training from the time she could walk, it was all too easy for Kazara to switch modes. She was not afraid. In fact, excitement and anticipation flooded her veins and she slipped into the darkness alongside Sumner. She brushed his arm with her fingertips. Iâm here. As far as she was concerned he had no reason to be nervous. Whatever was ahead of them was meant to make them stronger as individuals and as a team.
Besides, she knew her father wasnât done with them yet. How bad could it be?
Sumner relaxed infinitesimally when he felt the light touch to his arm from Kazara. She was still the only person he could bear to be touched by. Willing his eyes to adjust to the darkness quicker, he looked around for anything to give them a hint of their lesson.
He was still set on finding something when a gloved hand covered his mouth and the bite of a needle pinched his neck.
The darkness got a shade darker as his body fell to the floor.
The Leap
lonelysoldierkazara:Â
âLike I said. Weirdo.âÂ
Kazara slowed to stop when they reached the specified training room. Noting there was no light on inside, she was immediately on guard. Her father was never late, especially not for her training, and he wasnât the type to wait around in the dark to catch them off guard. Juvenile scare tactics were far beneath the tactical genius of Nikolai Fews. Peering in the window, Kaz was suddenly grateful sheâd opted to wear shoes rather than her standard socks. Who knew what was ahead of them today.Â
Dropping down from tip-toes, she exchanged a look with Sumner, all traces of amusement gone.Â
âReady?â
He didnât bother to make any sort of follow up comment to Kazara, falling silent instead. His thoughts were a bit of a storm as he did his best to try and anticipate what it was theyâd be doing today.Â
When they got to the training room theyâd been ordered to and there was no-one there Sumner felt himself start to get nervous. He stood a bit taller, automatically shifting into the soldier they were trying so hard to mould.
âAs ready as Iâll ever be.â
With that said he pushed the doors open and walked into the darkness.

The Leap
lonelysoldierkazara:Â
Kazara wrinkled her nose at the phrase civilian integration lesson. Out of all their training programs and lessons, those were her least favourite. Unlike Sumner, she grew up in the compound and while the world above intrigued her she was almost always caught off guard by how bright, colourful, and busy it was. She always came back with a headache after being surrounded by so many people. At least it was getting better for her. The more often they went out the less terrible it was.Â
But she still crossed her fingers that today would be a tactical exercise.Â
âWeirdo. I doubt it though. I guess weâll see once we get to Dr Fews,â she said, stifling a chuckle.Â
âIâm not a weirdo. I just like it.âÂ
One shoulder lifted and fell in a small shrug. At the mention of Doctor Fews, Sumner resisted the urge to sigh heavily. While it was fairly easy to figure out where he stood with many members of leadership and staff it was always a mystery how that man would react to him. Some days he seemed almost fond of him. Others made him sleep lightly, figuring heâd wake up in the middle of the night with the other manâs hands around his throat.Â
The Leap
lonelysoldierkazara:
In the three years since she met Sumner, the two of them became thick as thieves. What was a fragile, budding partnership grew into a strange friendship. A bond that surpassed even thirteen year old Kazaraâs hopes. Now, at 16 and 21 respectively, Kaz and Sumner were entering into their last stage of training before becoming full fledged agents for Faceless Corp. Normally a student Sumnerâs age wouldâve graduated to agent already, but considering his late entry into the program and his subsequent pairing with Kazara, they would both graduate upon Kazaraâs eighteenth birthday.Â
As it was, the time had come to embark on their next step. While they wound through the labyrinthine halls of the underground compound on their way to todayâs training exercise, they shed their professional masks and fell into their role as friends. âWhat do you think theyâve got planned for us today, Cade?â She grinned up at her friend, wicked mischief flashing in cool blue eyes.
Sumner glanced down at Kazara, his steps completely in time with hers as they walled through the halls of the compound. His expression turned thoughtful at her question.
âNot drills,â he said after a moment. âThe would have told us to come in our athletic uniforms.â He almost made a face at that before continuing on. âPerhaps weâll get another civilian integration lesson.â Those had turned into something he loved and feared. Getting a taste of the world he used to have. And then being brought back âhomeâ.
âI thought it might make you feel better if I was annoying,â she said, shrugging without physically shrugging. It helped that it was very easy to annoy Sumner. She had years of practise under her belt, after all. In fact, annoying him was something she used to have a lot of fun with. That was one thing she wouldnât mind getting back into. âBesides, you make it so easy for me.â
âOh you did, did you? Yes I feel completely better now. Your infernal plan has worked.â Sarcasm directed right back at her though he still didnât mean any of it. Sumner cleaned up the area a little more before he snorted out a laugh of amusement. âI hadnât realized that I made it that easy. Seems like Iâll have to make it a bit harder for you from now on.â Like that was possible.

âAll right. Fairâs fair.â She was generally happy to let him pick the music, but she didnât mind getting in on the action every now and then. Kazara shifted the heavy box in her hands but didnât head upstairs to the master bedroom yet, lingering in the foyer with her partner. It was such a domestic scene. Easy to get used to, though neither of them should. Anything could happen to cut their mission short and thrust them back into life in the Faceless compound.Â
Like usual, she wouldnât let anyone know that bothered her. Not even Sumner.
âSince weâre on the same page, Iâll leave you to your unpacking. Iâve got some setting up to do upstairs. Call me if you need me, Silas,â she called over her shoulder, already ascending the stairs.
He was curious to see just what sheâd pick for the music. That thought brought another quiet smile to his features. She was constantly surprising him so he had learned early on not to try and assume anything. It made for less bruises and embarrassment when he did.Â
Sumner chuckled to himself as she left the room, calling out his teasing reply of âIâll call you even if I donât, Katerina.â After he heard her ascend the stairs, he stepped into the kitchen and began to unpack.

âOh, I do think they will like that,â she said, rolling her eyes and laughing quietly. The antics of bored, rich people never ceased to amuse her. Well, that wasnât entirely true: there were many times that bored, rich people annoyed her. It just happened to be quite funny that they all seemed to be the same when it came to spying on new neighbours.Â
âPerhaps this time I will just let it happen. Unless youâd like to try your hand at guessing?â Kazara raised an eyebrow at him in challenge.
âYou can pick the music that we play when we do. Since I did last time.â In truth Sumner didnât mind this part of the job. There was a nice sense of normality in moving in. In arranging things to their liking. Part of him--the part that he didnât bother to really acknowledge anymore--knew it was because they were away from the confines of the compound. He could pretend, for a little while at least, that he was simply a married man enjoying time with his wife.
Not that he would ever dare admit so. He knew better than that.
He paused, thinking for a moment, before responding. âNo I think just letting it happen would be the better idea.â

Kazara let her smile fade when the door closed behind them. A soft âclickâ followed by a quiet whirring sound announced that the door was locked. She brushed off the spotless navy blue of her business formal dress and held her hands out for the box Sumner held. âIâll do the master suite, then,â she said with a slight nod.Â
âIâm sure weâll be having some nosy guests over in no time.â At this, she smirked. The Marshalls were entertainers: Sumner and Kazara would be hosting many dinner parties in their time undercover, if things went to plan.
He handed the box over and raised an eyebrow, a smile tugged at the corners of his mouth. âThe living room we can work on together. Itâs always a crowd pleaser for some reason.â The past two undercover missions they had, the new neighbours always managed to come when they were setting up the living room.
âDo you want to make your guesses or just let it happen?â It was a game of theirs. Wagering on the habits of people theyâd never met.

When Sumner kissed her cheek her smile shifted into a playful smirk and she reached up to brush off an invisible lint from his shoulder. âOf course they are,â she replied, blue eyes bright and alert. âNeighbourhoods like this donât get new neighbours like us very often.â Theyâd done this enough times that falling into their role as a couple was easy.Â
Seconds later, the âmoversâ slipped past them out the door, the last one tipping his hat to them to signal their job was finished. Thank heavens. Unpacking the boxes from the truck had already taken nearly an hour: Kazara â Katerina â was anxious to get inside and get the house up to snuff.
A soft chuckle bubbled over as he shifted the box so that it was a little more easy to carry. After she brushed off his shoulder he nodded to her before turning to slip the last of the movers a tip. Nothing like outwardly setting a good precedent in a high end neighbourhood.Â
Once the last of them were gone, the truck fading into the distance, he finally turned and crossed the threshold of âtheirâ house. âI was thinking that I could set up the guest bathroom and the kitchen,â Sumner announced. âSince it wonât take long for the new neighbours to crawl out of the woodwork with their greetings and curiosity.

Kazara held open the door to their new home, eagle eyes on the Agents acting as movers. Nothing in the boxes they carried mattered very much to her but she had a character to play, and Katerina Marshall was not the type of woman to let people manhandle her property. In the brief lull of time where all of the âmoversâ were inside the house to drop off their boxes Kazaraâs gaze was drawn to her partner, whose hands were full with a small box as he approached the house. It didnât look like much, but she knew that that box was the most important of them. It held their lifelines.Â
As Sumner â or rather, Katerinaâs husband Silas â approached, Kazara put on her best housewife smile. âPut that one in the master, babe.â
Sumner had his gaze on the movers as well, mouth turning downwards as if he were truly worried about the possessions that were being brought into the house that they were moving into. At Kazaraâs--now Katerina--words he felt an all too real smile appear.Â
âOf course, darling.â He paused to press a kiss to her cheek. âPeople are already getting curious,â he whispered to her.

Art Imitates Life...
By the time they got to the first scene with the young girl Kazara had her hand over his on her thigh. Fingers laced together. The show was unsettling and yet intriguing. It burrowed under her skin somehow, and easily. âThat man is going to die,â she murmured, an observation more than an emotional comment. It was obvious: the girl was on the run, the man helped her. He was a good soul and of course that meant he wouldnât last on the show.
âOf course he is.â The good ones, the ones that helped? They always died. Or got heavily injured in the process. He didnât say so out loud as that wouldnât have helped either of them. Sumner shifted slightly then bodily pulled Kazara close when the inevitable occurred.
Youâre Drunk...
âYes,â she replied, blue eyes bright with laughter. âBut it sounded funnier when I said it.â Kaz winked at him and handed the bottle back over, done with that particular mode of teasing. One sip of that stuff was more than she wanted. A smirk settled on her lips. âOh? Maybe not this particular type of alcohol, but youâre forgetting that while we were apart I lived in Scotland,â she reminded him with a snort of laughter.
âYou like to hear yourself talk,â he told her, not unkindly. Honestly he was used to her restating things. She had always done so and it made sense to. It was confirmation. Sumner accepted his bottle back and took a welcoming sip as he did so. His answering smirk was smaller but still there. He hadnât forgotten that fact since sheâd told him. âWould I take that to mean that youâre more of a Scotch woman now?â
