At the beginning of the English Civil War, officers were chosen based mostly on their social standing rather than their military experience. Infantry officers did not wear uniforms but could be identified by the colour of the silk sash they would wear and by the long-handed weapon, the partisan, they carried as a symbol of their rank. Being a captain of a company of infantry carried less cachet than being a captain of a cavalry troop, but nonetheless command was given to those who supposedly held the respect of their men. This changed over the course of the civil war, as Parliament sought to promote men of ability rather than social standing. . #reenactment #historicalreenactment #reenactmentlife #thesealedknot #history #historyteacher #historical #17thcentury #englishcivilwar #englishhistory #britishhistory #battle #manchester #livinghistory #captain #officer #fancy #suit #promote #atmosphere #atmospheric #march #manchesterlife #weekendwarrior #hobby #pasttime #passion . 📷 by @wayofthebob https://www.instagram.com/p/B54t8_tnJXI/?igshid=1ej5ttq4zejqr
