The Profession of Arms (2001)
A new video exploring the use of riflemen by British forces during the American Revolution. A follow up to this one about American long rifles.
Why does your musket need a condom?
~
YAY I can't wait to explain this. So my college's reenactment group has to store our muskets in a room (they are put in the police station so they are secure) with horrible humidity that rusts muskets no matter how much gun oil is on them. There is rust in the locks and barrels which is particularly an issue because it stops the muskets from firing well. Hopefully we get a real gun safe eventually, but for now we have to improvise. Condoms just are good at sealing the musket (rubber bands and ziplocks are ok too) and relatively easy to get. Our group (*ahem* mainly @boats-and-cabbages and I) will be raiding the college's free condom boxes in the near future.
This is a goofy aaa tip for any gun safe-less reenactors out there 🫡
Japanese made Percussion Musket produced during the Bunkyū era for the Shogun. Domestically produced firearms were poor in comparison to European Arms and therefore the Shogun and various feudal Lords purchased most of their arms from Europe via the Dutch. Large numbers of firearms were imported with the largest number of imports taking place in the Bunkyū era 1861 to 1863. These Dutch muskets were relatively simple such that individual, small shop Japanese gunmakers were able to successfully copy the imported muskets, thus reducing the need for substantial additional imports until the arrival of more effective percussion rifles.
