A sure sign of spring when you go out hiking is to find trilliums. But I never knew this exotic red trillium existed. . . *** #trillium #redtrillium #signsofspring #rareflower #prettycool #dadsgarden (at Beautiful West Seattle) https://www.instagram.com/p/CNV0PjIBiZj/?igshid=1cyw69q48mual
Red Trillium (Trillium erecta), on the Lynn Valley Trail last week. Red Trillium has some fascinating relationships with the insects around it in its woodland environment. The flower has no nectar to attract bees/wasps for pollination and relies instead on carrion beetles and flies to spread pollen, attracted by its smell of rotting meat. The Trillium's seeds are covered with a layer of fat known as an elaiosome, which is attractive to those ubiquitous insects: the ants. Ants carry the seeds to their colonies and consume the fat, but discard the seeds themselves. The seeds are thus brought to new areas and discarded underground in ant middens. In this way, Trillium seeds are spread throughout the woodlands. . . . . . . . #nature #ontario #lynnvalleytrail #trillium #redtrillium #trilliumerectum #plants #flowers #woodlandflowers #ontariowildflowers #ontariowildflower #wildflowersofinstagram #norfolkcounty #norfolkwild #blognorfolk #simcoeontario #natureobservation #ecology #symbiosis #biology #botany (at Simcoe, Ontario) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAPkO8vABmM/?igshid=12hd2dlxflq0m

βI walked, all one spring day, upstream, sometimes in the midst of the ripples, sometimes along the shore. My company were violets, Dutchmans britches, spring beauties, trilliums, bloodroot, ferns rising so curled one could feel the upward push of the delicate hairs upon their bodies.β -Mary Oliver I hope everyone got outside and connected with the earth today! #redtrillium #trillium #ferns #fiddleheads #norwayspruce #sugarmaple #whiteoak #spring #walkinthewoods #earthday #earthday2020 #earthdayeveryday #healingisinyourhands #chiforhealing #everyoneoutside #maryoliver (at Middletown, Connecticut) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_TdElspRMS/?igshid=1i5dvs4xznff9
Anyone recognize this plant? Itβs red trillium or Trillium erectum. This beautiful woodland plant is now blooming in forests near you! Trillium typically grows at the base of a hillside or along a lake or stream in the forest. They are easy to recognize by their 3 large leaves and 3 petal flowers and bloom end of April to early May in the northeast. There are also white varieties that bloom a bit later. The red is my favorite. Thanks to @jordanherpich for the tip of where to find this one. This is one of the more commonly recognized flowers of the forest but there are so many more that Iβve photographed the last few weekends. My goal is to post a new flower each day so they donβt just sit on my computer like they usually do π #redtrillium #Trilliumerectum #nativeplantsofct #woodlandflowers #forestflowers #plantnerd #nativeplantsofnorthamerica (at Giuffrida Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_PuXNlpYtZ/?igshid=x4afbu22ix0x
