Ok I've gotta say it James and Erin's matching Clothes
It's been noticed alot here, and I wanna think it's to match them, most the time it's red and that suggest love n passion, but it's a show about the troubles in Ireland and a bit of Irish history has crept into my psyche for this one.
I thought hold on isn't there a symbol in Northern Ireland that's red? Yes only the bloody red right hand of Ulster (yes the 'Red Right Hand' very Nick Cave, I know)
There's a legend to this flag, namely the story about a chieftain who, when his rival was leading in a boat race, won by cutting off his own hand and throwing it ashore so that he touched land first. One upmanship to spite your own other hand ( could also be said of Jerin). It's also believed to have been used by the O'Neills during its Nine Years' War (1594–1603) against English rule in Ireland.
So is the red to highlight thier push pull relationship of fighting against each other, Erin does insist on pointing out he's English, alot, but still takes his side at times. Although it could also be symbolic of James becoming part of the fight against English rule, becoming a Derry Girl and Erin's internal struggle with her own identity as a Derry girl. She romanticised her home town, but also berates it.
Or worst they are the only two at loggerheads, although I think that the prom proved that's wrong.
Weirder still the girls are in St Patrick's Blue, which was associated with being Anglo Irish, maybe its all just an extra layer to this onion that is Derry girls, messing with the colours, so what's blue should be red an vice versa.
Anyway a wee bit of Northern Irish symbolism and legend there, just for thr Craic
I'm hoping it's the him becoming more Derry Girl than wee English fella and the red is also for lurve.
Whoops and the NI flag of Ulster us red n yellow, uhum! And here's a Union of yellow n red below
