Update!

Anyone interested in an EVAK fic to make their sadness over other remakes feel less palpable?  (but also what I have so far would suggest it would just be another form of suffering....)

I have an idea floating around, here’s what it is looking like:

When children first learned about the red thread that connected them to their soulmate it was a moment of excitement. It was something to look forward to; an adventure waiting to unfold before them; a literal lead that will bring them to their second half. Who wouldn’t be excited at the prospect of love? Real love? Like the ones spoken of in stories, fairy tales of young orphans full of kindness who were destined to marry the prince of a far-off kingdom because their thread knew their worth. Of superheroes and the person they had saved being destined for each other. Tales of happily ever after.

 As children grew and matured, they were meant to pay attention to the red thread around their finger that only they, and on rare occasions their loved ones, were able to see. The thread, or lead as it was sometimes called, would grow longer and stronger every day as children became surer of themselves and who they were as a person solidified with each new experience. One day the lead would connect further than its owner could see and as they followed it, they would find it led to their perfect person.

 Isak, of course, was as excited as all his friends and classmates around him at the prospect of a soulmate. He was hopeful to find love like the stories he read at night with his mother and the films he would watch snuggled next to his dad at night.

Isak thought he accomplished the hard bit coming out to his friends. They accepted it like it wasn’t a big deal; like it didn’t even matter. They even encouraged Isak to get out in the world.  So what was the point in mentioning a crush he’d had in the past? It was over at that time anyways.  The only problem should have been that Isak was too slow to say no to the plan forming in his friends’ minds, and he found himself in the middle of a bet.  Who could set Isak up with the perfect man? Isak had no say in the matter.  The bet was on.

There was just one other problem

Isak wasn’t as single as his friends thought he was.

Robbe Ijzermans would never claim to be particularly observant. He only had to look at his year-long crush on his best friend to be able to tell that he lacked the ability to read people particularly well. That or he was just willfully ignorant. The fact that he was the cause of Jens’ temporary break up was a good example of this as well. Robbe genuinely didn’t realize that he and Jana had liked each other that much.  Anyways, Robbe reasoned, the two of them were so on again off again that he could hardly be blamed for their relationship drama.

This isn’t to say that Robbe is completely unaware. He was aware of his attraction to Jens, he was aware that Jana was an obstacle in the way of their friendship. He was even, on some level, aware that nothing was going to come from his feelings. Jens was the first person nice enough to give him the time of the day. His interest reflected that. But he knew, even at the time, that it would bloom and then wilt soon enough.

If Robbe was honest with himself, which he tried not to be, he was so focused on ensuring no one could tell his thoughts and feelings, that he hardly had time to notice others around him.
