Undertaker doesn't get tech?

Hmm 🤔. Canonically, 136649 and Othello were registered at about the same time and went through training together, according to Othello in ch149.

And, if you look at their registration photos, they don't look much different in age. We still don't know for sure what the process is for creating reapers out of humans who committed suicide, but I theorize their souls are collected, judged for this "crime", and placed in new (baby) reaper bodies as a form of karmic reincarnation.

That would mean they go through some growth period before they are even "registered" or "recruited" as active reapers. That would definitely have to be the case, if they are basically reborn in reaper bodies. If that's true, then they are probably recruited/registered at about the same age, like late teens or something, much like when your average human first enters the workforce. That's when they would be deemed old enough to start serving out their long sentences as active reapers. And I use that wording because they remind me of prisoners with their registration numbers and their long years being punished for the "crime" they committed.

So... goodness. I don't think of Undertaker as being older (at least not as a reaper) than Othello. Othello and Undertaker would both be older reapers than Grelle and William, and certainly older reapers than Ronald and Sascha.

As far as tech goes, I'm not sure. Othello is more inclined to use high tech gadgets and equipment than Undertaker, but that might only be because Othello isn't cut out for collecting souls. After training, Othello went straight to the forensics lab, and 136649 went to soul collection.

Now... Undertaker might have been a total Luddite in the beginning. His choice of death scythe kind of suggests he's always been a bit of a traditionalist. If he's Cedric K. Ros-- (and I believe he is), then his parallel in Ivanhoe -- Cedric of Rotherwood -- also happens to be a bit of a Luddite. Neither our Undertaker nor Cedric of Rotherwood wants to do trade in the crown's coin. And Cedric of Rotherwood doesn't show positive interest in advances to agriculture or other industries.

🤡 for a crack theory

@truedarkhunter I’ve mentioned it a time or two before, in older posts, but the biggest crack theory I have for the reaper glasses Anderson makes is them having homing or tracking devices in them.

Active reapers are willing to wear them because of their nearsightedness, and it would help explain two major things:

Why William was able to track down Grelle so quickly after Madam Red was killed

Why deserting reapers might be able to sneak out their death scythes... but don’t keep their special glasses. They don’t want to be found too easily. Particularly if they kept their death scythes....

If this turns out to be true, then The Most Beautiful Death in the World got one part right and one part wrong:

He’s an odd one to parallel, since we haven’t seen much of him yet.

However, he shows signs of being part of the parallel to Dr. Andonuts (along with people like Undertaker, the circus doctor and Rian Stoker [to a much lesser degree, perhaps], and Sieglinde). Dr. Andonuts is a brilliant inventor (though perhaps a bit misguided) who really likes “an donuts” (donuts with a sweet red bean paste), and he has a tendency to offer them to others, like Lucas. Undertaker bakes, eats, and likes to offer those bone-shaped cookies, and now Othello is seen eating licorice and even offering them to the earl…. Even though Dr. Andonuts survives to the end of the Mother series, we’ve already seen at least two inventors/innovators die in Black Butler: the circus doctor (innovated the ceramic prosthetics) and Rian Stoker (who was probably involved in the development of the dialysis machine shown in ch125). I expect Undertaker and Sieglinde to survive, but other fill-ins for Dr. Andonuts? They are not as likely to make it….

He also could take over for Grell in the role of Ionia, one of the Magypsies. If that’s the case, then he is unlikely to make it to the end of the series…. If he dies on the earl’s orders, then Othello would have fulfilled the role of Ionia (and would have allowed Grell to live). Grell is such a popular character that the fandom would probably lose its collective mind if Grell died….

Other than the single panel for Alan and Eric, we haven’t seen the “final” death of a reaper in the manga (and only Alan is actually shown dying there). And Yana-san might not kill off any of the ones we’ve come to know through the manga. However, it almost seems like a reaper death is due (just because, really). Our Othello has said he has no faith in his own fighting skills and that he’s relying on Grell for protection. This bodes none too well for Othello (whom I actually quite adore).

I’d hate to see him get killed, but he really could be putting himself in danger, since he has evidence to expose the earl as a fraud (stealing his older twin’s identity). Othello now has a strand of the earl’s hair, and though the earl and real Ciel are twins, they are mirror twins… and the earl has inherited asthma (something real Ciel did not inherit). Running various tests on that hair sample could lead to Othello knowing 1) why the earl looks so familiar and 2) that the earl isn’t quite whom he claims to be. This would be cause for the earl to “silence” Othello…. :(

Side note: The other main person who could expose the earl’s identity theft/fraud (right now) is Mr. Pitt (the reporter/photographer), since he has the original glass plates to various Phantomhive family photos (including the one he pulled out of his satchel in ch124).
