#really lucky

context: first time we almost ruined the friendship was on the 4th of July (independence day) when some friends dared us to kiss underneath the fireworks and we almost did just to shut them up but then backed out at the last second. (we'd been friends/frenemies for all of college and people had been telling us we were meant to be for a long time, which we used to find so annoying... ha 😅)

fast-forward nine months (I told you all not to judge me!!!) at which point we had actually ruined the friendship, and he picked me up after I was finishing up a research paper at the library, and I remember I was so tired and all I wanted to do was get tacos, cuddle with him, and watch Netflix. but he said we needed to stop at a friend's place to pick up something. I was whining about it non-stop because I said he'd get distracted and then we'd end up staying for hours and I wanted tacos blah blah blah. (he's since told me that he was so stressed he thought he was going to be sick, but I didn't notice because I was so concerned about my tacos lol.)

so we get to the little house our friends were renting off campus, and he told me to wait in the car and he'd hurry back, which was fine with me ofc. but then he was gone forever, so I was sitting there getting grumpy and planning on being so snarky when he finally reappeared when I heard this boom boom BOOM come from behind the house which made go 😳 and in my head i'm like "is that fucking fireworks? why the fuck are they setting off fireworks in April??"

but I still didn't get out of the car (which they'd been planning on lol), so one of our friends runs around the side of the house and waves me out telling me I had to see something that mr.nicoledilona was doing, which definitely activated my "i'm too tired for this, i'm gonna kill him if he's being an idiot, I just want tacos goddammit" so I ran around the side, fully ready to tell him to stop being stupid and take me home-

and then I see him on the patio, surrounded by all these lit up firework sparklers stuck in the ground (in the ground, they really were a group of idiot boys 🤦‍♀️), and rose petals and these little candles on the patio that spelled out marry me? and him kneeling there with a ring.

and, true to form, the first words out of my mouth were "what the fuck?" 😭

then I started to cry, he told me he loved me and he should have kissed me back under the fireworks in July so we had a couple more months together and he didn't want to waste any more time (I told you it was cheesy!!! and god, we were so stupid, acting like we were wasting time by not being married at 21, I want to go back and slap us) and some other mushy stuff and then I said yes and we kissed a lot and ran off to go rent a motel room to celebrate in private (both of us lived with 4+ roommates at the time so it was a necessity). and it turned out to be a good thing that we left in such a rush, because the neighbors called the police on our friends for disturbing the peace, so they got a ticket for setting of illegal fireworks 🫠 but the friends did send us a snapchat of the cops passing on their well-wishes to us so that's kind of funny.

best part is- I did end the night with tacos... and a new ring on my finger 😎
