The idea that I'm gonna go start spending the big bucks on comic books because they took down readcomiconline is like assuming that revoking my driver's license would convince me to finally purchase a helicopter.
READCOMICONLINE HAS A NEW BACKUP DOMAIN SO IF YOU CANT ACCESS IT, GO HERE
(12 july edit) SHE DIED ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜
Just noticed that ReadComicsOnline is down. It's been two months and might be permanent
It super sucks because that site wasn't just hosting the hottest, newest Marvel and DC stuff. It was hosting thousands of comics, a lot of which had been out of prints for years if not decades. You could find the most obscure things on that site, including European comics that are notoriously hard to get your hands on
It was an extremely valuable archive and none of the alternative comes close. It's a genuine cultural loss
The funny thing about rco being down is that there quite literally is not an alternative to pirating comics.
You can say "Get them eBay!" Or "Try Vinted!" But then try and search for, I don't know, Mr and Mrs X. Can you find it? Do you have a home to remortgage?
What about that obscure Black Lightning Annual from 1993 where the warehouse burned down and resellers got their claws in early and there's only six remaining copies in the world?
DC doesn't even have a library for their writers and artists to access for their jobs. They have shot themselves in the foot so thoroughly that you almost have to laugh, by not only alienating their fanbase from the content they wish to consume but by cutting of their own staff's access to it and therefore severely limiting (if not decimating) their ability to pursue consistent characterisation or maintain canon (that's not to say they were doing either of those things when rco was still available but, you know. Before, I had the tiniest glimmer of hope).
Let's say Batcave (etc) went down and did so permanently. The comprehension of and general interest in most characters would wither dramatically as many vocal fans across the world (because I think a lot of people forget that enjoyment of superheroes is not limited to the US or even the US and Europe) simply cannot afford to access what they enjoy. Webtoon is well and good if you don't respect the source material but imagine WFA being the sole point or reference for Duke Thomas or Stephanie Brown. The current maelstrom of mischaracterisation would only intensify, held aloft by random, out of context, comic-accurate scraps. I cannot emphasis enough how much character comprehension would suffer if reading the comics failed to be so much as an option anymore.

the recent crackdowns on free online streaming and comic sites has something to do with the western devolvement into fascism i can't explain now you just have to trust me
suffering (readcomicsonline is down)
readcomiconline came back for a while after it got shutdown in May. i think it was back for like a month??? cuz i’ve reading on there for a while now and i just opened it again and it’s gone ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ ITS GONE AGAIN 😠the backup domain is gone too and THATS why im freaking out so much more
i can’t deal with this, i can’t. it makes me so sad and genuinely anxious. people don’t sell comic books in my country and those who do sell them, they either have VERY EXTREMELY limited stuff like basically nonexistent and then those VERY few (probably just one) places (i think they import books on demand or something like that?? like you request it and they bring it idk) they are extremely expensive. even the compacts are expensive.
the only way i can have access to comic books and read them is through these free sites and im so scared that one day they will all be gone
