Q:. I was wondering if there was a moment from filming [Good Omens] that really stood out to you.
David: Oh, oh I mean, so many. I think the most exciting moment for that was probably the read-through. Because when we first all sat down in a room together and read the scripts together and... Michael Sheen is someone I'd known - a bit - [audience cheering], oh don't cheer him, do not encourage him, honestly, don't tell him we had this conversation - but we kind of been in a film together, but never had a scene together, we'd never really worked together. We'd known each other, but we didn't have any sort of... before the read through, we didn't have any get togethers or nobody discussed anything. We just sort of... So that was the first time we sat and read the script out loud together in a room with everyone else. And that was probably at that point you're going to go, 'Oh, this is going to be all right. I think we're going to have... I think this is going to be quite good fun.' Which, indeed, for now, for over two series, it has proved to be exactly that. So that moment was probably the most significant because it led me to believe that what was about to follow was going to be indeed what it was, which is a wonderful, exciting experience. And I can't wait for you to see Series 2.
At the risk of sounding silly, self-consciously so - although if someone says it is silly not to know things I'll through them an apple to the face - I want to share more of my reading of The Book of Lost Tales part 1 (at a turtle's speed, as you will notice).
I am finding it very interesting to finally read about some bits of lore such as Oromë as Yavanna and Aulë's son (!) and Gothmog as Melkor's son (!! also Kosomot, such a cool name), Nielíqui, Salmar, Makar and Meásse (though I disagree, Christopher, that this was not in fact "bound to prove an embarrassment," as he claimed).
Ómar was a big surprise. I had never even heard of him up until now (I didn't assimilate a word of it when I first read it, that's abundantly clear).
"Whose voice is the best of all voices, who knoweth all songs in all speeches."
A Singer Vala! 👀 makes me curious to see if there are any fics written about him and his relationship with Elves. I don't think I've ever read any (oh, time to read everything, where art thou?).
Also very intrigued by the version of the creation of the Two Trees and the different Valar's homes in Valinor - but especially that Nienna was a sort of Mandos Halls for Men, a judge that could read their hearts and "judge them by their sins."
Some then she keeps in Mandos beneath the mountains and some she drives forth beyond the hills and Melko seizes them and bears them to Angamandi, or the Hells of Iron, where they have evil days.
This is insane. It could be interpreted as Nienna fully knowing the fates of Men she sends "beyond the hills" and not caring whether they would be punished by Melkor or not. The whole Purgatory vibes made me think of Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, though I doubt it was intentional.
Anyway, reading this book again after all this time - and these years in fandom - really makes me pay more attention to characters and things that I otherwise wouldn't because I've already seen them pop up in different stories. I never thought fanfiction would be the motor behind me wanting to delve deeper into canon.
I recommend it, It's a lot of fun! 😁
