Usually she doesn’t notice how heavy a crown can be. Not forgets — Gertrude could never forget the sheer gravity of this thing that made her who she is, this role and responsibility she’s made her own — but she lets the burden of it slip from her awareness.

And yet. Sometimes when the men who think they’ve done it all on their own are paying no attention to her, when she’s finished signing all the necessary papers, she allows her shoulders to slump and rubs at the tension that will never leave her neck, casting her gaze into the middle distance.
