#Why
Rotterdam and Gdańsk are both European delta cities defined by their ongoing negotiation between land and water. Although each was devastated during WWII, their reconstructions set them on very different paths shaped by port functions, flood resilience, and cultural identity.
Rotterdam rebuilt itself as a symbol of modern urbanism — a future-oriented, engineered city where living with water is managed through innovation and infrastructure. Gdańsk, by contrast, restored its historic form, placing strong emphasis on heritage, memory, and its legacy as a Hanseatic Baltic port.
Together, they show how two delta cities can share similar challenges yet evolve distinct identities.
