âIâm going to hit you now, so try to defend yourself. If you can do that, youâll pass.â Rain declared a fist raised towards the examinee.
One of the Duties of a general was to seek, assess, and train knights to be the best knights they could be, and as one would expect of such a peculiar individual, Rain did not perform his qualifying tests like other generals.
Rather than the usual physical one-to-one spar, he engaged in tests that targeted the mental prowess of the trainee rather than their raw strength. After all, a Knight should have the ability to make tactical choices that meant life or death on the battlefield, both for the knight and the people they protected. Charging in without considering better solutions was not much different from throwing away your own life.
But it was because of these special qualities that he sought and tested examinees for, that those who relied on muscles were not exactly thrilled by Rain's methods. Thus, every time the exam was conducted, there would always be one trainee who would question Rainâs Methods. Of course, the complainer almost always was someone who only relied on his fists and sword to do the talking.
âThatâs easy,â The examinee cackled, clenching his fist in preparation.
Needless to say, it never went well for them. Rain was well-renowned and in a high position for a reason after all.
âBring it on- Â The soldier had no chance to finish his sentence before he was sent flying to the wall by Rain.
Though he let out a slight hum as a trail of vines quickly grew from the stony floors and walls, a large leaf caught the soldier before he crashed against the walls of the fortress and gently brought him back down before the vines receded rapidly, turning to the crowd of protesting examinees and sending them an innocent look.
âSo, does anyone else have objections?â He called, watching as they all shook their heads aggressively. With that, he turned to the culprit of the sudden rescue.
âDidnât have to do that,â Rain sighed, gesturing at the groaning soldier now on the ground as nearby medics flocked around him.
âHardly any need to be injuring your future Knights,â Xandra shrugged as she made her way into the plaza, an excited princess following next to her.
âNah, he didnât pass, and I know their type; he wouldnât have backed away until he realized the bridge in strength.â
âReal humble,â she quipped back with a teasing grin, ignoring the unimpressed look the man sent her.
âStill, I âm sure his family wouldnât be too happy for him to return home in multiple pieces,â she waved him off.
âIs the test over?â Selva asked, stepping closer to the general.
âWe just finished, Princess,â Rain answered, watching as his words suddenly increased the tension in the room as all the knights-to-be had suddenly dropped to the ground in a kneel.
âAh, no; please stand at ease,â she nervously ordered, trying to ease the soldiers to cease the curtsy.
âSo, do you want me for something?â Rain questioned, ignoring the Princessâs fretting
âThatâs right!â The sovereign shot up, suddenly remembering the reason she had barged into the test in the first place
âRalphus-san wanted to talk to you,â Xandra explained.
âHim? Ah⌠Then Iâll leave now; please take care of the rest.â Rain ordered, looking back at Xenoa and Lenny as he walked away, only to halt at a sudden call as a black-haired trainee approached him.
âUmm, I'd like to ask you something!â She exclaimed, a confused look growing on her face as the general suddenly approached her, placing a hand on her shoulder and leaning to her ear.
âCome to my room later,â he whispered before walking away, joining the two awaiting teens, raising a brow as Xandra stared at him with a suspicious look upon her face.
âYou know that sounded really ominous, right? Thatâs probably what someone would hear before they disappear,â she mumbled, letting another whine as her comment simply got her another bonk to the head.
She rubbed her head, running to catch up to the couple and taking her place next to the princess before glancing next to them.
âIs he with you?â She questioned Rain, her gaze set on a nearby tree.
âHuh? What do you mean, Xandra?â Selva questioned, looking around and growing confused when she couldn't spot anyone to justify the question.
âI âm glad to see you noticed,â Rain called, rubbing her head proudly before turning to the spot she had been gesturing to.
âI could hear his heartbeat following us around,â she admitted, tail wagging behind her at the sudden praise of the general.
âImpressive, you could tell my gender as well?â
âHuman Males have a slower heartbeat than those of women,â she admitted
âI âll be here from now, so you can go back to investigating that guy for me.â
âDid anything unusual happen while I wasnât there?â
âI would like to say that there wasnât anything, but I felt a suspicious presence not only once. We canât rule out the possibility that weâve already been invaded either.â
âLittle Wolf, what about you?â
âMe? Well, Other than GĂźnter-san, there have been some unaccounted presences I can hear following us around,â Xandra confirmed
âI see..â Rain trailed off with a frown growing on his face.
âWhat are you talking about?â Selva cut in
âIâm also kind of lost here. Why have you been following us, GĂźnter-san?â
âIâll give you complete information at Ralphus' place since this matter concerns both of you. Rain assured them, gesturing forward.
âIf you will excuse me,â GĂźnter mumbled, bowing to the three of them before making a prompt exit, before the two girls glanced at each other
âI âm sorry for calling you,â Ralphus apologized as he greeted them into his quarters.
âI have troubled you too, Princess.â
âWhat were you thinking using your liege Lady as a messenger?â Rain accused him
âNo! We wanted to get you on our own accord!â
âItâs because we wanted to see you as fast as possible,â Xandra admitted with a grin, joining Selvaâs side once more as they looked up at their Knight.
âLittle one, you should remember to act a little more like a Queen; Little wolf, you too; youâre supposed to help her, not encourage these behaviors.â Rain sighed, muttering that it was okay at the moment since the only one with them was Ralphus, before gesturing for the two to take a seat on a nearby sofa as they too mirrored their actions.
âSo what about that matter that concerns both of us as well?â Selva questioned, cutting straight to the point.
âI hate to say this, but⌠assassins want to eliminate you.â Ralphus pushed out, and at the words, Selvaâs world crashed. She was not naive enough to think that everyone would side with her the moment for her to take the throne came, she thought she would be well prepared by such a role, but it seemed she was not as ready as she initially thought to shoulder the responsibility of the country on her shoulders, she bemused as she gripped Xandraâs hands in search of comfort.
âPrincess, currently thereâs only one heiress in this country. If you were to vanish, the throne would be open. For the aristocracy that seeks supreme power and various countries that are waiting for a weakness due to internal collapseâŚ
âI expected as much. Selva-san is the only one able to take the throne. I understand why they would target the sovereign, but what interest could they have in me?â
âYouâre not human.â
Xandra couldnât say she was surprised at the reasoning behind the price on her head. She could see how aristocrats and those who sought to be closer to the crown would hate to see that not only was their sovereign a young girl, but that her lady-in-waiting was one too, and one obviously not human. Over the centuries, Xandra had come to understand that people frowned upon those different than them being over them; she had seen more than once how something as small as this could be the spark that initiated bloodshed;
It was what had caused the destruction of her homeland after all.
âRain! You could have said this differently, too!â Ralphus hissed, shocked at his friendâs bluntness.
âItâs alright,â Xandra cut in. This time, she was the one gripping Selvaâs hand as she let out a small chuckle.
âIt wouldnât be the first time that people have had a problem with my non-human status, and it wonât be the last time.â She brushed off, glancing at Selvaâs crestfallen expression. She couldnât blame her; it was a lot to take in, from her father passing away to having to take on being told that people were out to kill her. But she also knew that once they saw her true potential, many would understand how worthy she was of sitting on the throne.
Selva still had much to learn about the world and the responsibilities that royal blood carried, but she was sure that with help, Selva could rise to be the Queen this Kingdom didnât know it needed. Unlike those before her, she was not one to allow nepotism or injustice. Although it was this very same quality that would cause some parties to always be after her, it would be the thing that would turn Sunkwoll into a flourishing, just, and welcoming country, one that looked after not only those of lineage but everyone. It was because of this reason that Xandra was so sure that this girl, she was the one she needed to support if she was to leave this world knowing it would not be destined to be wiped out by war and greed and she would continue to do this while still staying true to herself, honoring the life and self that many had died to protect centuries before.
âI am proud of what I am; it reminds me of my family, of my homeland, of my people, and I will never pretend to be someone else just to appease them,â Xandra confidently stated, a smile on her face. In turn, Ralphus let out a sigh.
For the next few minutes, the tension in the room never ceased as both Rain and Ralphus went to explain the different parties that could have been involved in the hiring of the assassin guild that was currently targeting the two girls. But in the end, there were an incredible number of parties who would benefit from the princessâs removal and whose royal status despised the fact that a non-human was in the inner circle of the country and thus wanted more than anything to eliminate Xandra.
âSo we donât know if the enemy is within the country or outside,â Selva concluded.
âIn order to not be captured theyâll use a day like today when a lot of outsiders visit us. Thatâs why Iâve had GĂźnter following you since yesterday.â
âI didnât notice him at all,â the princess confessed, worry growing on her at the fact that she had managed to completely miss the fact that more than one person had been trailing her.
âIt would have been nice if you had given me a warning. What would you have done if I had attacked him?â The wolf-hybrid question pointed an accusing finger at him.
âThatâs my bad, I couldnât afford to tell you since I wasnât sure if people were listening in, and I knew you wouldnât attack someone lest you were sure they had malicious intentions.â
âBoth GĂźnter and Xandra felt suspicious presences too. Thereâs no doubt that they want to see how things stand at close range.â
âThatâd be clever,â Ralphus concluded. As he was mulling over this, Rain noticed the tight grip the princess was keeping on her Lady-in-waiting, and with a smile on his face, he put a gentle but firm hand on top of her head.
âDonât worry, Iâll be your personal guard for now. So leave everything to this genius here!â Rain vowed as Xandra to shoot forward, gaining both of their attention.
âDonât forget about me! Iâm your protector too! Plus, I was here before this idio- ow!â She whined, rubbing her head as Rain swiftly pulled his sheath and bonked her on the head.
She would forever be grateful to Selva, who was not only welcoming to her and her companions but also considered her one of her most trusted, equaled only by Rain. She was determined to protect her not only because she was the key to prosperity but also because she had been kind to her. Although Rain needed little protection, she was still determined to ensure nothing befell him as he, too, tried to make Selva the unquestionable sovereign of the country. Both of them had been nothing but welcoming despite her appearance and abilities, and this was something that very few people were capable of: taking a chance and approaching someone who was clearly much different than them, and she would be damned if she let them down.
âItâs true!â Xandra protested, glaring at the black-clothed soldier
âDidnât need to add that last part, and that aside, I donât want you to overdo it either, you are one of their targets as well. I will protect the both of you.â
âDepend on me too! Iâm strong, and I will protect Selva-san no matter what,â she shot back, and eventually Rain let out another resigned sigh, but a grin broke through his facade as he nodded.
âSo donât worry about a thing, Selva-san! You have a knight and a lady-in-waiting watching your back at all times!â
