You know you have a wage problem for the service industry in the US, stop living in denial and stop acting like you're entitled to servants waiting on you for free, or it's some other person's responsibility to pay a wage to a worker. You know their wage comes direct from you, the consumer, because they are little more than a busker being given a pittance as a cover fee by their notional employer. This is reality for USians, pay the tip, cope and seethe, peasant.
The entitlement of Americans to think they have the right to a personal servant every time they eat out and paying the tip is some gracious reward if they like you enough. Are you a feudal lord? Are these your servants waiting for a scrap from your table, your majesty?
Waiters should be entitled to ask you for a tip up front, actually, and then refuse to take your order or even seat you if you don't.
For some reason, your culture doesn't like actually paying a wage to an employee...
If you're too poor to pay out of pocket for a food servant, eat in a place where they don't have them. McDonald's perhaps.
