#questioning queer

Don’t spend so much time figuring yourself out, don’t obsess over it like I have. Don’t despair if you’re wrong or it changes. Things change and they will naturally over time. It is a phase. That is beautiful. You may want to figure it out and distress over your identity labels. Guess what?

“It doesn’t matter as much as joy. Be joyful.”

If the label queer helps you to describe yourself, if the queer community makes you feel like you belong, if you're political in a queer way, if it feels good to know there are other people like you, if you want to show that there are many ways to be queer, if you want a community to talk about your attraction to girls and your experiences, then is that not reason enough? If none of that fits you or your identity, then that's alright, but there is more to queerness than marrying another woman.

Additionally, visible queerness is often a choice and not being visibly queer makes nobody any less queer. It also can be a struggle in and of itself because it can be harder to connect to one's own community and in the case of being closeted or stealth, it comes with the dangers of being outed.

Whether you want to identify as queer is your own choice, but we will welcome you into the community if you decide to, and we will support you either way.

scrunkly little boy Airleap

His canon name is Tommy and that always messes me up bcus i have a ginger cat named Tommy so I always think Filou is Tommy and Tommy is Filou. But in Burning Thistles he’s Airleap so no confusion for me there!!!

Airleap is transgender! Actually a bit of a retcon; when the first chapters of BT were written the idea wasn’t in place, but in later chapters it was, although never stated (but soon to be!). Which means Airleap knew he was a boy by one moon old :3 a bit young, but hey, never to young to start figuring things out! just a bit harder to grasp sometimes lol. actually I like to kind of headcanon that he’s got androgen insensitivity syndrome or something similar, where he’s genetically XY or XXY but his body isn’t producing certain hormones/has female sex organs

and in terms of sexuality/romantic orientation - he’s not so sure! He’s definitely had many a’ crushes on she-cats, so that’s not in question, but he’s never really considered toms before! he thinks he’d be alright dating a tom, but he’s not sure if he’s actually attracted to them or not or if it’s just aesthetic/platonic attraction and so forth. perhaps one day he might figure himself out, or maybe never! so he’s Questioning Queer with a for sure attraction towards girls :)

also much like his once best friend and brother Copperleaf, he’s found himself creating a family platonically with a friend. Morningflower isn’t his best friend, nor his mate, but the two raised Gorsekit, Storkkit, and Quailkit together! The kits refer to Airleap primarily as their uncle, but they would call him their dad if asked! (ex.: “Where’s your dad?” “Oh Airleap’s over there!” and “Don’t talk to my dad like that!” but they refer to him generally as Uncle Airleap when speaking to him directly or about him otherwise. It’s like an Aunt May situation)

the nick is his ear is from when he was a kit - specifically this moment in Chapter 10 on Ao3:
