i'm really feeling this too. Like I feel like the fandom took a complete nosedive after 4x11 and now everyone is irrational and staking their entire happiness and mental health on the outcome of a TV show. Like I'm queer as hell and want queliot but like, it can't be the only thing keeping you going rant over in your replies lol

I was just thinking about this while writing yet another post tonight.  But seriously, folks, it’s important to take care of yourself in fandom.  

I understand mental illness.  Both as a former professional in the field and as a sufferer.  I 100% use fandom and fiction as coping mechanisms to deal with my mental state.  But there’s an unhealthy thing that can happen when you put too much of yourself into fandom.  Your self-worth and self-image can get tied in to fiction.  

But, I think the real problem isn’t so much that you care too much about fiction, but that arguing within fandom becomes such a big part of you that you can’t face the idea of not being right.  It’s clear how quickly sides form, factions form and suddenly you’re not just a person or a username, but a Shipper.  Or a Stan for whoever or whatever.  It’s part of your identity, it’s who you’re friends with, and suddenly we have fucking political parties in something that’s supposed to be about all of us liking the same thing.  

I’ve been in fandom 20 years.  I’ve seen a LOT, kids.  I’ve seen all the big Fandom Wank stories of the past in real time.  I’ve seen ship wars that led to Actual Death Threats  (thanks Doctor Who fandom!)  Countless friendships made and friendships torn apart over what happens on TV.  I’ve been called names and accused of things.  I’ve lost friends and entire communities and it fucking HURT.  

Guys.  Be kind.  Whatever you’re fighting about, fighting for, it’s not worth breaking your heart and ruining your mental health.  Or someone else’s.  Seriously.

Fandoms: Right now pretty much just The Magicians, although I have been rereading some One Direction fic and Glee fic from years ago. Also, always Harry Potter and Buffy.

Where You Post: AO3, although I did post a Roosterteeth fic on tumblr like years ago

Most Popular Oneshot: turn me on, turn me off. Even though it’s part of a series, I’m going to count it because they’re all basically just stand-alone porny fics. 

Most Popular Multi-Chapter Story: The only one I’ve written, which is Veins Fit to Bursting. 

Favorite Story You Wrote: Veins Fit to Bursting! I have basically been preparing to write something about the buffy-verse my entire life, so it just felt so fitting. I loved playing around with morality questions and indulging my vampire kink. It was also my first time building a world, which was so fun! I’m honestly so proud of it and it defines my 2019 to me in a lot of ways. 

How You Choose Your Titles: Either they’re some kind of phrase that feels relevant or a song lyric. For vampire fics in particular, there’s like trope-y words that everyone uses  (blood, veins, bite, etc.) that I wanted to include somehow. Fun fact, the original title of Veins Fit to Bursting was actually Empty Veins (because depression), but then I was like nah, this isn’t a story about being depressed so much as a story about finding hope. 

Do You Outline?: No for shorter fics that are basically just a scene or two anyway, and I kind of figured out what kind of outlining I need while writing Veins Fit to Bursting. 

Complete: On AO3, 10! I took a fanfiction writing class in college taught by my girlfriend in which I think I wrote maybe 3? But only ever posted 1 of those. 

Coming Soon/Not Yet Started: This week I’m contributing to the Eliot birthday fest, and then I’m slowly but surely working on a kink discovery no beast Brakebills era fic. And I have a vague idea of wanting to write some kind of werewolf thing to explore sappy pack feelings and cuddling, but we’ll see if I ever get to that. 

Do You Accept Prompts?: Sure! I have not written for any prompts yet, but that could be fun. If anyone has a specific angle of a kink they’d like me to write I am very open to hearing suggestions!

Upcoming Story You Are Most Excited to Write: I’m not sure if it’s going to play a role in the kink discovery au, but I’ve been thinking a lot in the past week about Eliot’s substance abuse issues and wanting to explore that. I think, understandably, a lot of fic either picks up after he’s decided to cut back or portrays him still in the functioning stages of alcoholism, but I’m excited and nervous to tackle it a bit more head on.

Quentin felt himself gathered into a strong-armed embrace. 

“Where have you been!” A familiar voice laughed. “You ridiculous, ridiculous man. I was starting to think you were dead.” 

Quentin shuddered.
