Jarlaxle is a Queer icon. 🏳️🌈🦄🌈💖
To me this is all the reasons why he’s become so relatable to me and maybe others too
Strict upbringing. He grew up in a strict religious society with a bland but strict gendered dress code. Yet grabs what non-conforming things he can get away with. like his fashion choices. The urge to be himself within or pushing the limits
Rejected by his family, thrown away, builds his own community of other rejects like him
Exploration. The urge to explore the world and surface for a better place of acceptance or to make one.
Escape plans. Slow and carefully placed escape plan from the controlling family and society
Self reliance/hyper vigilant. While surviving through shared community. He always has his trinkets to protect him and has back up plans if they fail. He’s hyper vigilant to his own safety like queer people have to be.
Trust issues. Due to trauma he’s always hiding his true self or intentions on some level due to past hurt or trauma from Menzo. This causes rifts with people who are his friends.
Hedonism. While not how I’m like. You cannot deny someone who is a hedonistic would be queer
Dandy drow dandies have always been queer or queer positive
Sex positive self explanatory
U-haul lesbian: Falls in love too fast, moves them in too fast, lets them meet the family too fast, not addressing the emotions and relationship boundaries at steady pace. (All of Sellswords and bringing Artemis to Menzo after barely meeting him)
Tragically omnisexual: gets close to and falls badly for people who are either emotionally closeted or might kill him. Might not form a healthy or stable relationship with. (Zak, Artemis, dragon sisters, kimmuriel too maybe)
I still don’t know how a cis (I’m going to assume heterosexual) catholic man wrote a character that’s so layered as a queer character without realising it
I feel like some queer authors haven’t explored these themes maybe because it’s still too close to home or they’re processing it. If any have send me book recommendations I eat this stuff up
