My sister from another mister and I saw the Freddie Mercury/Queen biopic BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY yesterday and were absolutely blown away. 

I’m going to just put out there immediately that this is probably heading straight to #1 on my Top 10 list for 2018, and it’s quite possibly one of the best movies about music I’ve ever seen.

Before seeing the movie, I didn’t really know much about the band, aside from their hits and attempting to pull off doing Queen karaoke here and there because I wanted to see if I could pull off some of the bad-assery the P!nk does when she covers the title, famed track (which, as you’ll see in the movie execs said would be a huge flop and never be a song the radio would play). Humble brag: I’m pretty good at doing the song, but obviously, superhero/rock goddess P!nk does it major justice if you feel so inclined to google search her live performance from 2009′s Funhouse Tour. 

Here’s what you need to know about the movie:

RAMI MALEK is perfection. Oscar-worthy realness from someone I’ve always known was crazy-talented (cuz of MR. ROBOT), but really didn’t expect to hit the big screen in such a majorly fast or colossal way. This is such a huge, flamboyant role to take on, and he does so with 200% commitment and completely authentic fearlessness.

BRIAN SINGER, who has basically been kicking ass in the industry directing comic book/supehero movies (like X-Men and Superman Returns), does such an amazing job, working in conjunction with Newton Thomas Sigel, the DP; ensuring each scene is packed with countless small details designed to put a big TEETH braing smile on your face because of how awesome it all is.

The casting aside is pretty amaze-balls across the board too, especially that of LUCY BOYNTON, who plays Mary, Freddie’s wife and long-time dear friend whoom he married before coming out as bisexual... or what seemed for him to def be “bi now, gay later.”

It’s an emotional rollercoaster filled with all the elements of life that one could tap into in celebration of the human condition. Laughter (it’s actually SO funny), tears (happy ones, sad ones, ya know), MUSIC (who doesn’t love music?! Who doesn’t love these classic Queen songs?!), health (Mercury is so very much an important part of gay history/culture, especially in regard to the AIDS epidemic and what charities and campaigning was championed after we lost him at the way-too young age of 45). I mean. This guy lived big and hard, and everything about the movie leads up to Queen’s iconic, unforgettable Live Aid performance from 1985. 

These days, you’ll find me crying at everything. I feel so inspired and after writing my first book it’s almost like I’ve given birth to my first child... so everything from Kelly Clarkson swaying on the voice to seeing leaves fall and the colors of autumn could inspire me to start bawling my eyes out. I knew BOHEMIAN would--- but I actually kept it together until the entire last segment, which I’m so so happy goes on for as long as it does.

When they do RADIO GAGA, I looked over at Carlee, tears welling up (which they had been throughout but not nearly as raindrop like ‘til this moment) and pass on the knowledge that this is, in fact, how our Mother Monster designed and decided who she was going to be as an artist. Carlee had no idea... this song... inspired LADY GAGA.

Go see this movie immediately! It is, so very special.

My local Middle School’s GSA has been compiling a list of queer books for a small queer library at school! I thought this was so cute and am going to share some favs! (btw these are skewed to gay/ bi characters because that is what i most identify with fyi!)

Books with Queer Main Characters

Fun Home, Alison Bechdel- v cool, there is a musical based on this by the same name which is super fun and makes me cry a lot.

Carry On, Rainbow Rowel - i ADORE THIS BOOK!!! some problematic bi erasure, but still HeLLA cute!

I Hate Everyone but You- v fun! i love gabby dunn and alison raskin, and their youtube channel just between us which i would 100% recommend.

Lumberjanes- i have heard that this is gay, and really seems like it, but i am not actually far enough in the series to have seen who exactly is queer.

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe - such a classic and so good!

The Great American Whatever- it was ok

Pink - this book gives me complicated feelings, it definitely isnt the queerest, and is super problematic bc of bi erasures, ew, but definitely made me think a lot, and ultimately was a worthwhile read as it went super quick.

Buffering- Hannah hart is so cool and i want to be her best friend

Will Grayson, Will Grayson 

Perks of Being a wallflower - i remember 0% of this book, except that i liked it, and someone was gay.

Books with Queer Supporting characters

The Raven Boy’s (Series)- I LOVE this series, but its not really fair to call it a queer book, as you really only find out who is gay in the last book. no spoilers!

Het Books (but are definitely gay if u know what i mean)

The Merchant of Venice - this is a shakespere play and SO GAYYYYYYY like wow, i read this book in school, but if the real book is to much and too dense, i definitely recommend the movie, it is as gay as it gets.

Nimona- Noelle Stevenson is so good at graphic novels!

A Study in Charlotte- ok, this is kinda cheating as there actually aren’t any queer characters, but if you like me are a mega Johnlock shipper, this modern Sherlock au might be a good substitute for cannon johnlock! 

so a few months ago me and @transpeterparkers made a queer advice, moodboard, and positivity blog. It didn’t go very far, but we’re starting to revitalize it, and we’d love it if you’d follow us or at least reblog this post!!
