First up, a look at just overall categories! What were the most common types of penalties across each of the teams, and what teams took which severity of penalties:

Restraining infractions by far the most common across the league, but Ottawa likes them the best; New York with the most game misconducts/match pens in the regular season.

Next up, who are our most penalized players? One count by number of penalty minutes, another by number of penalties assessed:

I still think the Sirens should've tried to get MZH up to 60 PIMs on the regular season once they were eliminated from the playoffs if I'm being honest.

Next up, what were the most common pens and who are our overall crime lords?

Tripping by far the most common; I'd say there's a pretty even spread across the teams in the league this year.

Last but not least, who are the teams taking pens against?

Rows are which team took the penalty, column is who they took it against- once again cementing that NY/MTL is the biggest rivalry in the league and justifying my montreal haterism

Key takeaways, plus extra context:

1) Most noteworthy is that 3 of the 4 games went to shootout, with the first game going 8 rounds. Since there are no shootouts in the post-season, it becomes more complex to predict what OT results might look like — but we are likely to see them!

2) The 3 overtime losses by Boston are Frankel’s only overtime losses this season, of her 7 total losses. Ottawa is the only team this season to beat Aerin Frankel more than once.

3) With the exception of the 1/11 game, SOG per game have been comparable. The season-average SOG that Ottawa allows with Philips in-net is around 30 per game, ranging from 19 to 43*. Ottawa makes an average of 26 shots per game (range not available because I had to calculate this by averaging their total shots all season). Boston’s average SOG is 26, and Frankel faced an average of 25 shots, ranging from 15 to 36.

*this range does not include the 3/18 game against Minnesota, when the Frost made 3 of their first 8 shots against Philips and Woodland was substituted for the rest of the game.

4) What does scoring look like without shootouts? Between regulation play and 3-on-3 OT, each team has 6 goals against the other — from 4 different goal scorers for the Charge and 5 different scorers for the Fleet.

5) Not represented here: the two teams are close in total penalty minutes against each other, with Boston getting 32 minutes (16% of their total PIM this season) and Ottawa getting 30 (13% of their total PIM).

As of the end of the Sirens Frost game this afternoon, here's some fun data:

The rivalry heat map again showing that Sirens/Victoire is not just in my mind but also on the ice, although this is surely influenced by all of those game misconducts handed out for the fight in DC. (This is showing number of penalties in each matchup). Sirens remain the most penalized team with 52 penalties on the season, but also the most fouled against team, with 61 penalties taken against us.

I've classified each penalty according to their type in the rulebook (more info on the website), and here's a breakdown of penalty types by team. Restraining infractions remain the most common, followed by physical infractions.

If you're curious about the way this breaks down as far as severity goes- minors are 2min pens, majors are 5min pens, misconduct is anything more than 10mins. Minors obvs most common, those misconducts are coming primarily from that fight again I believe.

Here are your top ten most penalized players, both by number of penalties and number of PIMs. No comment.

Last but not least, we see a relatively even split as far as proportions of penalties taken- Minnesota, Boston, and Vancouver are the goody two shoes of the league, while New York, Ottawa, and Toronto take the Problem Child end of the spectrum.
